Yeah he's following his beliefs but his beliefs included wanting war to continue forever. His sense of justice got screwed as time went on and he started commiting atrocities one after the other. In the beginning he wanted soldiers to fight freely for what they wanted to fight for and that's cool, but eventually his values morphed into wanting war and bringing soldiers into that path rather than preventing it. While Boss's idea of using the military is more just, I think Solid's wish of wanting to prevent conflict from becoming a fight was more hero-like.

I will agree with you in the sense that Solid Snake had a more noble reason to fight.

However, BB knew war would never end, so he wanted an army that would prevent innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. I myself disagree, because many soldiers don't want to be there, making them innocent as well, but I find it understandable that he didn't see this, as he himself only knew the life of a soldier.

Solid Snake's development was pretty subtle, but it's not as if it didn't exist at all. At first, he was little more than a player avatar, but he gained a personality in MG2. In MGS, he treats battle with cold pragmatism and acts like whatever happens on the battlefield is just the way it goes, as shown by his earlier conversations with Naomi. By the end of the game, however, he shows outrage at Liquid's attitude and even reacts in anger at Otacon's sheer ignorance if his creations true purpose. When Grey Fox sacrifices himself, Snake expresses distress and even ignores the player's input, showing he's more than just a player avatar. In MGS2, we see him from the perspective of another character, giving us an in-depth look at just how far he's come along.

MGSIV's only problem is that it went overboard on cutscenes, that and the loading system they had devices due to the early years of the PS3 was fucked.

Those two flaws aside, and they're big ones, don't get me wrong. But IV plays smooth, looks great, and has some of the best gameplay in the series.

The controls in V are great, but they're definitely there to give you the option to run and gun when things go tits up. IV felt much more focused on stealth controls and to give you a bit of freedom when you had to get in a firefight, you couldn't just unrealistically blast yourself out of a situation like you can in V.

I didn't care that much for Naked Snake in MGS3. There isn't much to him, and the only thing interesting about him is how what he is in MGS3 reflects on what he becomes by the time of MG1.

Solid Snake certainly had a more fleshed out character arc, though I like Big Boss as a character. Especially in MGSV and MG2.
