Persona Q and P4D were announced at the same time, and it marked the beginning of a serious "persona fatigue" over the intense rehashing and spinoffs P3 and 4 had received for years and years. The surprise P5 announcement afterwards helped to downplay this a bit, but they never really went away.

Part of the reason P5 was received so well was that it felt very refreshing to have something that was noticeably different from P3 and 4 for the first time in a goddamn decade. People thought that between this and the team working on a new fantasy JRPG that persona might be either moving in a new direction or at the very least taking a break for a little bit.

However by announcing PQ2 and persona dancing 2 it's as though absolutely nothing has changed at all in all these years except the coat of paint the rehashing will take. People are rightfully disgusted by being force fed this shit over and over for the same reason people are rating each new star wars film worse than the last one

PQ was neat fansaervice that got really tedious later on imo.
The gameplay was toned down EO where you could exploit the combat system incredibly easily, and the story had all party members boiled down to their single most defining characteristic.

if you've actually played both games, you can see the dozens of parallels p5 has to the p2 duology. Its almost a spiritual remake in terms of themes and character arcs (plotline not so much)

The dungeon design and art direction in the first game were brilliant, but as an Etrian veteran I kind of hated the combat. Sub-Personas were a braindead substitute for actual skill trees and most enemies in the game were extremely weak to insta-kill magic. On top of that, Sub-Personas regained some SP between battles, usually more than enough for 1 or 2 free AOE instakill spells, so you could just waltz through a dungeon untouched with very little effort

I know the EO games (especially 2 and 3) have some exceptionally broken party setups, but they take an incredible amount of planning compared to this

In addition to breaking the game, the idea of sub-personas is – if I may be a little bold here – really goddamn stupid. Based on concepts of Jungian psychology, the Persona is a spiritual manifestation of the part of the psyche that a person shows to the world (whereas the shadow is all the thoughts they wish to hide). The problem I had with PQ was that it tried to do a few things, but performed badly on all fronts. The story was about fanservice, but it bordered on gratuitous and over-saturated more often than not, and most characters got flanderized because of it. The gameplay was an abomination mix between EO and persona which didnt match well. Take the dungeon design and missions of EO and but leave the player character skills from persona and you have a game that's braindead easy at best, and overly tedious at worst. The most redeeming quality about the game was the soundtrack, but its about par for the course as far as persona standards.

Overall I feel like its a game that tried to appeal to too many people and ended up being disappointing to most. Though shout outs to the people who could still put up with the garbage and find enjoyment out of it: the game isnt bad by design, just not as good as it could be, and it takes a strong-willed individual to look past all the flaws.

I'm cautiously optimistic. If it's the P5, P4 and P3 cast all together, it'll be the biggest rehash of all time. If it's just the P5 cast, it actually wouldn't be that bad. Just like what many others have said, P5 and P2 casts would be by far the best scenario for this game. I also hope that it takes a bit more of a unique identity instead of being another EO clone. If done right, the game could be really great
