It's because Nintendo's been under some weird impression that the crayon artstyle was the main reason people like the original Yoshi's Island, rather than the game just being really good. That's probably why they keep making Yoshi games with all sorts of neat artstyles but rather lame gameplay.

The original Yoshi's Island was made as a Mario game by the core Mario developers and could be made alongside Mario 64 due to development requiring less staff. The rest weren't. Unless Goodfeel get even better at developing games none of the Yoshi games will be better than the original because the talent who made Yoshi's Island good will be increasingly required for each Mario game as tech demands more work/manpower.

The developer is more important than the branding. I mean no one expected Wario: Master of Disguise to be as good as Wario Land 1-4 did they?

I experienced this problem myself, having finished wooly world just last week. I think WW comes closer than the others (which were all such shit) but it falls very short on the music

Snes yoshi's island has a god tier OST, not one single song in WW holds a candle to it. I'd have preferred if they'd just put those classic songs in and then the game would have nailed 4 stars. I loved the asthetic, and the gameplay mechanics rode the coattails of the original pretty hard.

Nothing will ever top the huge bowser fight at the end though.
