It's like the perfect open world adventure game, where you need to
>actually find your way yourself instead of looking at a waypoint
>actually decide for yourself who you're going to talk to and try and get info instead of a cinematic or an icon deciding for me
>actually get money by actually doing a shit work or betting money instead of grinding cash by beating up more enemies
>actually fighting peoples with Virtua Fighter kungfu combat instead of Bamham bullshit
>day and night cycle that actually matter
>the level of details going on everywhere (there still some stuff in both games' I've yet to see because of some special requirements)

This game was the peak of videogames for me. Everything else since then feels fake.

Not even gonna talk about the story or the characters themselves, or the games' locations and graphics (at the time) I could go on forever.

I swear to god if 3 ruins this some nukes will be heard.
>>
I love Shenmue. I love Shenmue because it actually feels like a sandbox. Most """"open-world""""" games are transparently shallow and lacking in content, be it in places you can go, unique NPCs and locations, or even things you can do other than move around the map.

Shenmue instead gives you an objective, and you just kind of work towards it whenever. The rest of the time is occupied just exploring and taking in the surrounding, finding unique characters, new locations, getting to know the place you're in, and partaking in the various minigames, item buying, and collecting that you can do. It's pretty comfy and chill, but you have to be the kind of person that is into that kind of stuff. There aren't a lot of games like that. For as shit as it actually is as a game with awful fucking writing, Gone Home would probably be the closest thing I have played as of late.
>>
Pretty hyped for 3.
>>
I played 2 first.

It was one of the very first times I got blueballed at a game's ending. Wanted a sequel so bad. I played one years after that.
>>
3 is gonna suck dick and already looks terrible. You know it's true. I wanted it to be good too, but it's not happening.

Most of the critics back then panned the game because they don't understand openworld which they find boring. Mini-games like the gacha was criticized for not being needed or unnecessary while they like arcade mini-game.

So just like always even back then, journos should not be listened to.

I love it. I recently emulated both games. didnt realize how short they are when you already know what to do.

Yakuza 0 is about as close to a spiritual sequel to Shenmue 1+2 as you'll ever find.

I'm glad Shenmue III is getting made, but I can't help but think it'll be a disappointment. It definitely won't be a full blown open-world adventure like the originals.

Funny how things change. I remember when Yakuza first came out and it was hailed as "The Shenmue killer for the PS2" and then it bombed because nobody liked it. I remember being personally really disappointed too, I never finished it and never bought another Yakuza game. It was a jank Shenmue that was just a little too Jap for a non-weeb and while the jank may be gone for the latest games the weeb has been turned up even higher.

Katakana under the title list it as シェンムー, which is romanized as shenmuu, with a long u sound. It should be noted, however, that this is a Japanese interpretation of a Chinese word, as Japanese lacks a native "she" (pronounced shay) sound, hence the use of katakana, a script primarily used to express foreign words.

I backed the game for $600.00. I don't regret it, but I know the game can't live up to its legacy. I'm still highly interested in seeing how it finally unfolds, but since this isn't the final part of the Shenmue story, something tells me this is the actual end as far as we know. Unless Yu Suzuki manages to make an episodic type game, like what D4 was gonna be.

I still play through the games for my younger cousin and brother from time to time, as we all grew up with it. It's purely a nostalgia thing. I hope in the very least it captures at least the essence of Shenmue. Doesn't have to be amazing. Just passable is cool with me.

It's a real tugger. I always loved how the game just took place close to/ during Christmas. Felt very real in the sense the tragedy just happened on a random day. Not a special holiday or significant event. Just on November 29th in '86.

There just hasn't been a game since Shenmue 1 that captured the grounded, mellow realism it portrayed. Shenmue II almost did, but it got a bit wacky, which I'm completely fine with. Mostly the end scene I'm talking about.

Shenmue 1 is great. It has flaws no doubt but in terms of creating a world that immerses you and sucks you in very few compare to it. The way the locales are designed, the somewhat intentional monotony of it, the fact literally every single character in the game has a biography (some of them really in depth and interesting), etc. It's probably the single comfiest game ever created.

Shenmue II isn't as good IMO and a large part of that is because the setting is just not as good. Hong Kong just isn't as interesting or well thought or engrossing a setting as Yokosuka, none of the characters are as interesting or memorable and Ryo (and thus the player) doesn't have any real connection to it. The story isn't particularly great either.
>>
>>386058847
The problem with a lot of open world games is they think that map size is the end all, be all. Give you a large map to traverse and collectibles to find (towns, tchotchkes, etc.), some small sidequests and you're good. You're given no connection to the world whatsoever and no reason to want to explore. New Vegas is the only western game to get the open world mostly right.

The Yakuza games are probably the best open world games I've ever played in that respect though. The locales aren't the biggest but they make up for it by being jam packed with things to do. There's all kinds of mini games, food to eat, minor stuff to do (looking at/reading actual magazines for instance), the well thought out and written sidequests that help bring the world to life, etc. More games should look at Yakuza in terms of how to design the worlds to more effectively draw the player into the setting and connect them to it.
>>
>>386081618
Shenmue 2 is technically amazing, has more variety, but less minutiae.
>>
>>386055232

>Do you like games that are all graphics and no gameplay?
No.
>>
>>386063503
People always say this and maybe in terms of the detailed open world/city with lots of mini games it is. But I'd say it's inspired just as much by, if not moreso, River City Ransom. The open world brawling, stat/skill building, focus on gangs and even the fact both contain spinoffs that cast the characters in jidai geki roles point to far more RCR influence.

Nozomi leaving is probably a sadder moment to me than most other sad moments in vidya. I feel bad for her really. She comes to school, gets bullied, gets protected by an autist who can't notice how wet she gets for him and has to leave to go back to Leafistan (a sad fate) knowing her love will never be fulfilled. We'll never see her or any of the Yokosuka characters again.

I loved being able to practice moves in Shenmue 1. Sometimes you had to wait a half hour for something to happen, you've got time to kill, so you just head over to the park and work on it for a while. Or you fall into a routine of practicing in the morning if there's nothing urgent to take care of. You got some new moves once you mastered others, too.

Shenmue II to me is a case of bigger not always being better. Like I said a big appeal for me with Shenmue is the feeling of being sucked into the world. I got that in Shenmue 1 because like I said the world just seems much more developed. It's much more compact and thus breeds a lot of familiarity and it's fleshed out well in extra material, mainly the character biographies.

The more I think of this game, the more shit I remember that was awesome

Remember that time in 1, where you're fighting with your friend, and then a biker gang surrounds you and you fight 70 of em.

Remember the time you're faced with a QTE and you can't press the button, but instinctively you press it, proving to yourself you're not a kung fu master.

Remember that time in 2 where you saw this bitch kill her enemies without mercy, then you almost flip her to her death, and spare her, while her bookie is pleading for you to save her.

I thought Shenmue 2 was great, wasn't the philosophy behind it that people get flustered and big cities aren't accommodating? While in Shenmue 1 the small town, everyone knew you and liked you.

Shenmue is full of memorable moments.

I sometimes hesitate with these kind of games as it can be really hard or plain dumb to find all the content of the game. So when I get to the ending I wonder just how much I missed.

Its not a good "game" but its comfy and i like the flow of the story and immersing (for lacl of better term) in the world
