Should I be embarrassed for only listening to video game music?

Every other forms of music does nothing to me. I would argue that classical music has a mathematical precision feel to it but that's about it.
Any modern music sounds like putrid garbage however.

>classical music has a mathematical precision
Oh fuck off. If you can't just enjoy something for itself without trying to be a poser and put on an image to impress other people then just leave it.
>>
>>386047894
But the phrase 'mathematical precision' is literally the most memetastic description of a quality that people enjoy about classical music (usually in discussions about Bach) and immediately flags you as poser, whether or not it's true.
>>
>>386048287
>memetastic
If you can't describe something without using the word meme your argument probably doesn't have much ground to stand on.

It has a mathematical precision because in some songs the arrangements of notes is based on arithmetic series. That's it I don't mean anything else.

A lot of pop and rap is objectively garbage though. Only an idiot would actually enjoy it.

Yes, you should. You should be very embarrassed.
Listen to classical, beats, math rock, things that are just instruments if you're gonna be a bitch about it.

yeah, you can go wank yourself on /mu/ over your superior euphoric tastes. I'll wait for someone else who at least sound like they know what they're talking about.

>classical music has a mathematical precision feel to it

You haven't listened to classical music nor do you even know what it is. You are generalizing several hundred years of music here. Even the Baroque era famed for Bach and his fugues still has highly elevating and more melodic pieces, and the Romantic era is characterized by some of the most overtly emotional and spirited music ever.
>>
Hey OP, you might be interested in music that has been influential to most great vidya composers.
Jazz, prog/math rock and early electronic music have shaped many of the classic videogame tracks on the earliest systems, up to today's.

Give a listen to Ryuichi Sakamoto's Thousand Knives album. Sakamoto was part of the Yellow Magic Orchestra and his early stuff sounds like it comes straight out of an old game.

On the jazzier side, Thelonious Monk and contemporaries laid the groundwork for a lot of the Nintendo tunes, from Mario to Zelda.

Gentle Giant, King Crimson even Genesis could tickle your fancy, but are rather distant from the classic videogame sound.

Also check out Moondog's self-titled album. Very cool stuff!

P.S. I do not frequent /mu/

Sorry senpai you just lost your /mu/-rep for calling Baroque pieces "songs"

Then why the fuck do you listen to it? If it's all you listen to then you obviously think it has merit. Whether that's a small amount of merit or lots. Do you have autism? >>386052535 is the only relevant message in this thread.

I listen to video game OSTs pretty often, I'm guilty of listening to Undertale's OST while playing Overwatch, and I have Bloodborne's whole soundtrack on my iPod. It's not the only type of music I listen to, I have a pretty big weakness for metal and dadrock, occasionally some electronic stuff too, but I'd only be embarrassed if you decide you wanna play the Super Mario World OST at a party or some shit

I never claimed I had superior taste, and I certainly don't visit the shithole that is /mu/.

All I'm saying is that if you're selecting your music firstly because of inherent numerical qualities and secondly how much you can pose about it and not because you just like the fucking music then it's a good sign you have autism.

My condolences, by the way.

>Should I be embarrassed for only listening to video game music
I do not understand this. Why should it make a difference where the music comes from? Why does it have to be -exclusively- video game music? It's not like that's a genre of it's own, there's classical styled with full orchestras, there's rock, rap, and others. Lumping together those all into one category is like lumping together all classical like your retarded ass did.
So if you like a certain type of video game music, why not try and expand on what style that's from?
>>
>>386049928

Where the fuck did you read that? Are you projecting I'm stating the exact opposite.

>>386053582
thank god not a word of this sentence applies to me.

I remember being 12 and still "hating" certain types of music.
>>
>>386052014
>Give a listen to Ryuichi Sakamoto's Thousand Knives album
I like you, so I'll second this advice. Sakamoto is so influential to so many genres (and even some of the earliest video game composers) you would be doing yourself a disservice by not listening to Thousand Knives or YMO at least once.
>>
>>386055708
The first thing you said about classical was an observation about inherent mathematical precision. You didn't say you enjoyed it for how it sounded or how it made you feel. That's where.

Vidya music is fine because what matters most is how it makes you feel, not how it makes you look.

However saying all modern music is garbage most likely comes from having no exposure to something you like, most likely from being an autistic shut-in.
>>
I like video game music because it reminds me of the one thing in life that I enjoy, even though I think classical music is a lot better.

Try and find genres the vidya music you like builds upon.
I really like oldschool techno, hardcore/gabber and NWOBHM and it often has crossover with my favourite vidya osts in some form.
Music is music.
Music is nice.

24 and very mild. People should listen to whatever they like, I understand my favourite genres most likely sound like ass to most people. But from time to time i still hear music that drives me up the fucking wall of frustration. More often than not it's just having a giggle about how dumb it sounds from my outside perspective.

>>386052434
Why is that a problem? I listen to things over and over again because i just enjoy it that much. If i feel like listening to something else i'll listen to something else and enjoy that.
I've always been a person that doesn't listen to a whole lot of different music but really lose myself in the music that is special to me.

>>386052014
>Thelonious Monk and contemporaries laid the groundwork for a lot of the Nintendo tunes, from Mario to Zelda.
Could you give some more specific examples?
I never liked jazz that was too "jazzy" en frivolous personally, but J&R in Gta4 could be nice for nighttime driving at times.
I really don't hear the nintendo connection from what i very shortly skipped through.
>>
>>386060363
I'm not a very big Jazz buff. It's just that if you listen to that stuff, you'll hear where Nintendo got most of their jingles. But it's not song expanded from the jingles, more like the jingle is based off of a riff from a piece.

Wikipedia would be the place to look, I guess. Or YouTube.
>>
>>386047141
The only reason why you like game music is because of the memories associated with the tracks. Otherwise game music borrows from from all different genres of music, so technically you could find your niche in "real" music. Try jazz fusion or something
>>
lmao you're a massive pleb with a narcissistic personality.
No wonder you're vacuous enough to not search for actual music which purpose isn't to be background fodder, but still think of yourself to be superior to others.
