I love Oblivion so much but people who call things comfy in this context are literally autistic.
>>
>>386047947
Why? The idea of a game (or a movie for that matter) being "cozy" is pretty well established. Something relatively easygoing/prime to wrap up warm and relax with.
>>
>>386047842
Better quests. The little ones were usually more than just 'bring me five imp asses,' they had a little story and usually a nice twist.

Larger variety in enemies. You were mostly fighting bandits and drauger in Skyrim. You might see three wispmothers in a playthrough, all towards the end. Where are my damn goblins?

Oblivion is extremely comfy though. For most people it's very nostalic, the atmosphere is very warm out in the open and it's incredibly soothing to roam the grassy fields while listening to that amazing soundtrack.
>>
>>386048491
What puts me off is the janky way of the modding until I realise that all you need is

>Oblivion Reloaded
>Oblivion Character Overhaul
>The 3 linked mods that padd the guild+main quests out a bit
>Immersive Weapons
>Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul or OOO
>Any other quest addons you fancy
>Immersive creature expansion

And you're set. All of which are super easy and quick to install.
>>
>any city in oblivion
>best

3/10, pretty good bait
>>
>>386048737
Do any of those change the leveling and stat system? Since I read up on the mechanics I've irreversibly turned into a min-maxer, as soon as I level up I abort everything and head into a city to rest and I feel like I gimp my character if I can't get a +5 endurance each level up because then I'll lose lots of HP in the long run. Ideally I'd like an XP system just to try it out with levels just giving you a set amount of attribute points to allocate.
>>
>>386048868
What other cities in the series do you prefer to, for example, Skingrad?

>>386048914
The overhauls fix the difficulty a little bit but there are also mods specifically made to alter how levelling up works.

>The story is fucking stupid and you're not even really the hero.

I liked the Oblivion gates, my biggest gripe with them is that the landscape is so grimdark it gets boring pretty quick. If you don't like them you can plow through them in like 2 minutes, if you do then there's a decent chunk of loot in each one.
>>
>>386049034

Vivec City and Tel Fyr were pretty neato, but to imply Oblivion's cities are all shit is a bit of a meme.

Each of the cities in Oblivion are all different based on what part of the land they were from, with Anvil being massively different to Cheydinhal for example.

Bruma has a lot of Nordic influence due to its location, Skingrad which you call "generic fantasy" does have interesting bits to it such as the vampire infestation causing people to line their homes with garlic, and the Imeprial City has a great design to it.

The game is set in the home of the Imperials who are arguably the most vanilla race of the series so of course they'll be more "generic."

Are you really bashing on a game set there for not having cities as "weird" or "foreign" as a game set in edgy elf land?

Take off the goggles, Morrowind had a lot of cool shit in it but it isn't the be-all-end-all of TES games.

Yep. The shit persuasion system, lack of dialog, potato-people, shit level scaling horseshit, fake daedric equipment, boring oblivion gates, boring main plot.

Shivering Isles owned so hard it basically made up for the rest of the game though.

The white-gold tower being this tiny piece of shit is the ultimate insult.

If you were going to do a TES game in cyrodiil I say a cooler approach would be to make the White Gold Tower literally the setting of the game. In the original lore the tower is so big it's basically a metropolis in itself.

Make the entire game set in the tower.

While I pretty much always went for Skingrad because it had the fattest house I think I definitely liked Bravil the most due to the layout of the city. It's very easy to parkour in the city since so many of the rooftops are easily accessible; Cheydinhal would probably be a second in this aspect, though their rooftops are trickier to get onto with low acrobatics. I think you can even get on top of the chapel with minimal wallclimbing.

Do you know how many spells are needed in Oblivion for the Mage's Guild? Four. And they are given to you as scrolls so you don't even need the skill to cast them. Morrowind would be no different again except in that game quests are gated behind the arbitrary "have x skills at y and w skills and z" crap. The quests themselves don't actually require much prowess in magic.

>>Thieves Guild - Everybody is a fucking moron, explained too many times how this shit is retarded
It's always amusing to me that people routinely cite the Thieves Guild as the worst in Skyrim because "you don't do any thieving" when all that exposes is they only ever got halfway through it. The entire second half of the Thieves Guild is nothing but thievery. They also don't seem to be aware of how much dungeon diving the Thieves Guild in Oblivion had.

>>
>>386054830
Oblivion's leveling system is hands down the worst leveling system in an RPG. It is literally unmatched. Even a perfectly leveled 5/5/1 character will take forever to kill Goblin Warlords and Gloom Wraiths because the health scaling is so retardedly out of control. The best weapon in the game with 125% durability and fully charged still takes around 21 hits to kill a Goblin Warlord and they replace almost every Goblin at 35+ so get ready to whack and hack every goblin over 20 times under the perfect conditions.

The only way to legitimately play the game at max level is to create two spells. Your run through the dungeon spell that increases athletics, speed, and makes you invisible and your kill thing spell that takes all your magicka to cast, but deals a shitload of damage per second on touch. Then you just run through dungeons do as little as possible because everything is a health sponge so you only kill when necessary.

OR YOU AVOID ALL THAT AND JUST MOD IT.

Base Oblivion is perhaps one of the most unfun games I've ever played. What's funny is that a few tweaks to the level scaling and experience is all it takes to make it a blast to play.
>>
>>386056192

required:
- some means of making the combat very volatile; i dont want to be hitting mooks more than once or twice and i shouldnt be able to survive more than 5 regular swings
- something that adds a lot of variety in enemies, items, armour, weapons and spells, and ideally distributes them to NPCs

i've recently gotten into TES lore and there's one thing that still confuses me, why the hell are the Daedra worshiped? The orcs and argonians know they worship objectively evil beings, right? why is everyone else okay with this?
>>
>>386061159
>The orcs and argonians know they worship objectively evil beings, right?

Malacath is not "objectively evil". Most of the daedra are not "objectively evil", they just aren't particularly nice. A lot of people aren't particularly nice either.

Also, a lot of the worshipers say at least the daedra actually do things. The divines rarely do much of anything.

Let's compare guilds!
Oblivion vs Skyrim!

THIEVE'S GUILD:
>Oblivion TG can be missed entirely, retards might even go the whole game thinking it is actually made up like the loading screen says
>Skyrim TG is literally interlocked with the main quest

>Oblivion TG quests revolve ENTIRELY around thievery and stealing shit
>Skyrim TG is basically a watered down Dark Brotherhood

>Oblivion TG endgame is about pulling off the ultimate heist, a prestige challenge for master thieves
>Skyrim TG endgame is again, a faggy knockoff Dark Brotherhood cultish faggotry

>Oblivion TG boss is a mystical figure to the general population but is actually a living, working member of the world with a history who appears as normal in game after a certain point

The daedra aren't objectively Evil. They're just different, and people on nirn *perceive* them as being evil.

Also, not all are considered to be evil. Meridia & Azura are generally considered to be "good". Others are considered to be neutral.

"FIGHTER'S GUILD" (aka Companions)

>FG Guild hall and influence in every city, memorable banner and halls feel like actual halls
>1 CM building in the first city you find, all quests and content for the guild originate from this location (SLIGHT pass as it could be for "lore" reasons

>FG characters are interesting with different personalities, all play their own part in the story/are memorable as the leaders
>Companions are all forgettable as shit other than the guy who you first see become a wolf and the huntress waifu

>FG quests are just that; being hired muscle to sort out problems for people, then develops into a war with another faction whilst keeping characters of the guild personally involved
>Companions quests are ENTIRELY just radiant quests you can get from inkeeps/jarls or else a faggy "muh werewolves" storyline
>>
>>386062125
What? I played both, Skyrim's thieve's guild was absolutely fucking awful. All the "lore" reasons aside, the quests made fuck all sense and it basically turned into what could be bluffed as a dark brotherhood quest toward the end. There was arguably one good thievery mission and it was the one in the dwemer ruin, while I enjoyed almost all of Oblivion's TG quests.

Different cultures have different views on death. Some might view Sithis as something that wants everything to die for the sake of dying, others might see it as a natural part of the life cycle.

Either way, it is very much real (and they know this) and it is a powerful deity. You want worship gods without them being merciful.

Skyrim is a completely mediocre, uninspired, unambitious waste of time. While it has less negatives than any other Elder Scrolls, It has none of the positives and none of it's own. If Oblivion is a jewel encrusted turd, Skyrim is just a plain old rock. You'll pick up a turd if it's got some diamonds in it, probably clean it up (mod it) and now you've got diamonds. With Skyrim no matter what you do it's still just a rock.

I've got some lore for you.

The idea that Cyrodiil was supposed to be an enormous jungle is not true. The immediate area around the Imperial City is meant to be jungle cleared into rice patties fields, that's missing and has been replaced with grassland, but all the rest of the "generic" forests, swamps, mountains, etc. that are there in the game are actually consistent with the lore. Maybe it was changed because Bethesda are lazy, maybe they couldn't get a good looking jungle, maybe they thought it just didn't fit well. Who knows?

That said, it's true that the vanilla models are shit (but who plays Skyrim with the vanilla graphics?) and not having some sort of in game fast travel is shit as well. To say that is sufficient to call it worse than Skyrim however is laughable. All Oblivion needs to be better than Skyrim is quests. That thing you spend most of the game doing instead of the main story. Skyrim had shit quests. Let alone Oblivion having attributes, more spells, better factions, disposition not being out of 4 and actually changing quests (don't give a fuck about the minigame) doesn't help your case much either.

Each tower has a stone and there are around eight towers. The white gold tower has the Amulet of kings as its stone for example.
The Aldmeri dominion is looking to destroy these towers by deactivating each stones which would ultimately unmake reality.

They want to do this because they think that Lorkhan who tricked the other gods into creating mundus separated them from their ancestors, the aedra.

Not quite true.

The white-gold tower is already deactivated. It's no longer working. But yes, if ALL the towers on tamriel are deactivated, and if men forget about Talos (he in himself became a kind of tower), then existence may end.

Thats what the Thalmor want to achieve so they can return to the original existence them and men came from.
>>
>>386065912

Or he used the Thu'um. Or he used CHIM. Whatever, it's not there anymore. Point is, all of Cyrodiil was not jungle. Oblivion was not breaking the lore just so they could have a generic European landscape, it was always meant to be there.

It's possible that Mankar Camoran was a Dragonborn. During the game Oblivion he is wearing the Amulet of Kings outside of his own realm. He also briefly touches on CHIM in the Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes.

Couldn't be bothered looking it up but there are books that talk about Cyrodiil's landscape. They describe the jungle around the Imperial City but they also describe the forests, swamps, mountains, etc., etc. that surround this jungle. If I remember correctly it's a little vague about the area towards Anvil, the grassland there may not have been mentioned but it's presence is no contradiction.

Cyrodiil was a jungle. All of it. At the time of Oblivion coming out, it was meant to be, but they decided not to because they were lazy. Between Oblivion and Skyrim coming out, Michael Kirkbride wrote "The Many Headed Talos" while not being affiliated with Bethesda, describing Talos using both Thu'um AND CHIM to take down the forest for his people to farm. The Many Headed Talos is Heimskr's speech in Skyrim now, effectively giving a reason for Oblivion to look how it does.

I reckon They're gonna skip long enough into the future so that both the empire + dominion have collapsed during another great war, so for TES VI it's back to each nation being independent, looking after themselves.

That doesn't have to be a long skip - the rumblings of another war were already gathering during skyrim. Hell, 30 - 50 years would be more than enough.

I thought it was cool, though I don't think I'd want them to do it every time a new game comes out. The story and setting should decide how much time, if any, has passed.

I'd like to see a game set in the Summerset Isles, both to provide a jarring rotation from Skyrim's manly viking adventures and to measure the affects of one man's heroism. I think it would be interesting to portray Alinor during the aftermath of losing the second Great War, after the Dragonborn and 'his army' (leaving it at that since you chose sides differently) drove the Elves back from the countries of man. I think you could do a very cool take on a region beset by treaties and sanctions strangling it after its defeat and invasion, sort of like Germany after World War I, where the elite survive using their potent magical skills to survive, but the humble commoners are starving and living in extreme poverty. Your allegiance would fall more toward the wizards of the Isles, who are perhaps more able to assist with the main threat of the game's story, or more towards your common man, who won't be able to offer the same help, but instead you would be their advocate for change.

The entire game would be an examination of what happens on the flipside of things, where in Skyrim, this outcome was all most players wanted, but in just a few short years from another person's perspective, your most prominent political leaders have fallen and your entire town is suffering for a war you never even saw. Could be cool.

I remember making a novice level spell at the Imperial Mage's school that charmed 100% for two seconds, when the game first came out.
It blew my mind that I could use it on shit like bandits and then talk to them about rumors and shit before they immediately draw their weapons again.

I also remember using the paint brush staircase trip and discovering a hidden door inside the model of the Imperial tower completely by accident, that instantly skips you to the final stage of the main quest where Martin sacrifices himself.
Good times.

>It is the largest region of the continent, and most is endless jungle.

That's the line that everyone jumps on. Do you know what follows it?

>Its center, the grassland of the Nibenay Valley, is enclosed by an equatorial rain forest and broken up by rivers. As one travels south along these rivers, the more subtropical it becomes, until finally the land gives way to the swamps of Argonia and the placid waters of the Topal Bay. The elevation rises gradually to the west and sharply to the north. Between its western coast and its central valley there are all manner of deciduous forest and mangroves, becoming sparser towards the ocean. The western coast is a wet-dry area, and from Rihad border to Anvil to the northernmost Valenwood villages forest fires are common in summer.

Hes not even kidding

He wasn't a "metal & wires" kind of robot, but a creation of sorts.

A mentally ill time travelling robot who created & destroyed kingdoms, then went even more nuts and almost completely annihilated the entire race of Wild Elves in ancient Cyrodiil. He slaughtered so many that the last sighting of a wild elf was 1000 years ago, they either completely died or their bloodline merged with other elves like the altmer.

As for the time travelling:
The Song of Pelinal, Volume 3, States:
"Pelinal called out Haromir of Copper and Tea into a duel at the Tor, and ate his neck-veins while screaming praise to Reman, a name that no one knew yet.", suggesting that Pelinal has either prophetic visions/knowledge or time travelling capabilities

As for the cyborgness:
He was called Pelinal the "Whitestrake" because of his left hand was made of a killing light suggesting robotic nature.
His heart was also a ruby which was visible in in chest at some point. During his death, IIRC.

No other game I know does that. If you do know one I'd love to play it.

I always thought Oblivion was the best one, even though I grew up with Morrowind.
Morrowind was the best for world and lore, but garbage as a game, Skyrim was the best for gameplay but garbage for everything else, Oblivion hit the middle really nicely.
>>
>>386073378
There were regular Oblivion threads on here well before generals were a thing or Skyrim was even announced. This isn't Zelda cycle shit, there's always been a sizable amount of people that loved Oblivion.
>>
I started playing Morrowind for the first time recently. I decided to join the Mages guild and really liked how small your tasks were compared the the college in Skyrim where you immediately find some Ancient, all-powerful artifact and have to save the world. Problem is, ALL of Morrowind's mage's guild quest feel like chores. Nothing really exciting seemed to happen, all you did was run errands for your superiors.

Then I remembered Oblivion's mage's guild quests. Oblivion had some great faction quests. It struck a nice balance between Morrowind's pointless errands and Skyrim's Immediate Fate of the World quests. You have to first prove yourself at each guild hall in Cyrodill, and while those quests aren't very urgent, they are all still fun and memorable. There is a "Save the World" plot for Oblivion's mages guild, but it gets built up in a fun and satisfying way. I haven't played Oblivion in maybe 5 years now, but I remember the Mages Guild much more than I remember the College of Winterhold, from a game I played last year.

I'm having a lot of fun with Morrowind, but I can't wait to finish and start another big run of Oblivion.
>>
>>386073378

All of the Oblivion guild quests did a really job with pacing and making you feel like you're earning the rank you would need to be to be involved in the big moments for each guild. In Skyrim the DB is the only one that comes close to meeting that standard. The Thieve's Guild and the Companions stories make some effort in trying to make you feel like you're starting from the bottom, but the main questline in neither guild ends up really having much to do with the purpose of the guild it's supposed to be about.

>What I want from the upcoming TES game
More weird lore, definitely. I want more Dwemer tech, more metaphysics, more giant time-fucking golems, more Altmer bird spaceships that shoot lazers, more Khajiit moon colonies, more Mananauts, more gay cyborgs.
Basically all the esoteric shit they've always been afraid to put in the games. I want that shit.

Also Cyrodiil was fucked by consoles. It needed to be at least Morrowind size do really give how ecologically diverse it is any respect. What we got was a theme park -- take ten steps, now you're in the deep green grass place, take another ten steps, you're in the yellow grass place, then a forest, etc. Either this game was cut to like 50% of what it was planned to be or they really didn't think through how they wanted this game to look and just lazily turned it into the English countryside.

It's a pretty cool necromancy mod. I turned the Elder Council champers into my own necromancer lair and throw skeleton parties with the other necromancers. every now and then the mages guild comes to try and crash it but they get btfo and I raise them from the dead and the party gets bigger

Imperial waterfront. My first house was that little shack on the waterfront and I loved it. Plus the garden of dareloth is there and I loved the thieves guild.
>favourite gear
Dark brotherhood armor.
>favourite quest
The one that has you go inside a painting to free the artist. IIRC you have to kill paint trolls with turpentine or something?
>>
>>386064220
How is Vivec the Night Mother? I think Mephala is more likely. The Tribunal were more goal oriented which is not like the Anticipations or the Dark Brotherhood at all. Sithis is godhead-tier, not really a thing to be worshiped, but I could see Mephala manipulating Sithis-worshipers away from primordial chaos and towards plots and murder so she gets their adoration.

I know right? The concept is ripe for it, going around taking out Alyeid strongholds to liberate people, the Warlords that get away can easily become rivals. Plus it's not like you need to worry about Pelinal being the leader his whole roll in the Rebellion was basically killing shit and challenging Sorcerer kings to single combat.

What made Oblivion so enjoyable was the brilliant quest direction. Everything was scripted incredibly well and was very enjoyable to play through.

>Skyrim has a better gameplay/combat

The combat is literally the same as OB's. Just with slightly improved animations. As for gameplay in general, MW and OB both have Skyrim beat. Skyrim really has nothing going for it. Worst quests in the series, worst guilds, most boring and poorly designed world, most forgettable writing/NPCs, worst leveling system, worst dungeons, the least variety in enemies, items, and locations. Obviously graphically it's the best in the series, but that's it.

TES is doomed by its success.

Daggerfall is so unpolished that racial stat bonuses don't get applied in character creation. That lack of polish set the stage for Morrowind, allowing the a lot of freedom for the team to experiment.

After Morrowind, the CoD effect started to come into play: the games were popular enough to merit a much larger development team and budget, but the direction became much more risk-averse. Oblivion is in many respects better than Morrowind as a direct result of the time and money that was spent in production, but it lost some of the things that made Morrowind stand out.

Skyrim continued the trend, with even better production and even less individual character. Skyrim led to TESO, the final culmination of everything that went before it: massive budget, zero risk-taking.

The wasted potential is what gets /v/ butthurt. If you can make a game with combat as shitty as morrowind yet salvage it with worldcrafting and plot, then why make the exact opposite mistake with Oblivion?
