The Walking dead got so popular, they got greedy while not caring about quality of writing

So what happened with the Wolf among us? that first ep was soo good and it took ages for the 2nd ep which was weaker to come out. That was the turning point
>>
>>386050882
>So what happened with the Wolf among us?
They cut out a metric fuckton of what they planned just like many of their other movie games. You know that police chick that brings in Bigby? She was gonna be your partner helping solve the case while slowly peeling back the veil on Fairytown. Also explains why so much of those episode previews don't actually match what's in them.

Because they can easily shit out a season of a popular franchise and have it sell a ton. They don't have to be good (their games are actually actively getting worse when it comes to puzzles and choices mattering) because the fans don't care.

It's a shame to because telltale's current model is so efficient they'll probably never go back to making regular adventure games.

I've read a few CYOA books and they usually have branching paths with different endings. Your only real choices in TT games are:
>what line you'll say
>be nice / a dick to minor character with marginal difference two episodes from now

there's very little variation

desu the interactivity made Sam and Max so much better, the best jokes come from for weird and forced situations by the player inputs that the characters obviously couldn't do by themselves.

An interactive netflix series is the best we can hope for, it keeps the player inputs and allows the most creative freedom.

Sam and Max was way before they turned into scamming scums, that started some years later with The Walking Dead s1.

Sam and Max season 1 and 2 were written by Steve Purcell so they're as good as they can get, Season 3 was all telltale but it was pretty fun and interesting, introducing new gameplay mechanics with the devil toys and going for a noir/twin peaks/twilight zone story.

I know I sound like a grumpy asshat and I'm definitely the minority but Season 2 while offering good gameplay and some funny situations tends to have crappy writing in comparison to Sam and Max canons. Like they stop being self aware, turn up the lolsorandumb and even date themselves with real people jokes (there was an Obama line somewhere).
Not gonna spoil it, but the big bad was one huge turn off and the whole thing was just unpleasant to sit through.
Season 1 just connected to me better, while what I learned from Season 3 is that apparently Telltale really liked molemen, and not making me enter the fucking office. Also Psychonauts.

TWAU is the only Telltale game I ever liked that used the Walking Dead formula. But that's because I genuinely enjoyed the story and really had little to do with the formula. I actually started reading the comics because of it.
>first play though
>I usually like anti-heroes, so I'll be nice guy Bigby for this run, to change things up a bit
>start off by trying to be understanding to Mr. Toad, end up failing to prevent a suicide because of it
>try to make amends with the Woodsman, despite being pretty genuinely disgusted with him, on top of Bigby basically being demonized despite ending up as the lesser of two evils in the long run in their history
>don't rip off Grendel's arm, get shit for "starting" the fight regardless, even though I stuck to diplomacy until I had no choice
>start getting a bit pissed off that shits like Bluebeard are more predatory than anyone else, yet gets a free pass because he's "clean" at least in the public eye
>finally decide to be a bit proactive and kill Dum because I'm getting loaded with buckshot like a raid boss under DPS
>never stop getting shit for it
>Beauty and Beast SUBTLY ask me to kill the Crooked man
>tell them I'm not a murderer
>get a sarcastic as fuck "oh of course not" in response
>kill the Crooked man because holy shit he deserved it
>bring his corpse back to the well and of all the people to give me shit for this, it's Beauty and Beast
>"This isn't justice!"
Fuck literally all of them. They need a monster like Bigby to keep them in line. They're more of a threat to each other than he could ever be.

S3 hid a lot of well done foreshadowing in my opinion

I agree. I think these were fun challenging games. Now it's just mindless crap with no real choice.

Oh well...
>>
>>386075025
That's because they were adventure and puzzle games, there was no "choice" involved, now it's all about selling the idea of choice and it has turned into a buzzword.

I'm not sure the whole "make a decision that changes the route of the story (supposedly)" thing really works given how, especially in episodic series, the story has to follow a general thread otherwise it's just impossible to actually make the game, to the point that characters just swap positions and the same ultimate fate still happens to them
It really put me off the concept once I reloaded a save in TWD and saw how much actually changed between supposed major choices. Or perhaps I just got bored of all the talking.
>>
>>386044814
Steve Purcell, the creator of the characters, owns the rights.

>>386045502
If you can go to a convention that Purcell goes to, he sells softcover versions of the Surfin' the Highway anniversary collection for like ~$30. You're pretty much screwed otherwise.

Is there any way for fans to contact Purcell or something? I'd love to ask see if he's considered something like an interactive series now that Netflix is developing them

Hnnnnng I've been looking for both. Do we know where he's going next?
>>
Only realized it now but HtR's animations are surprising fluid and detailed. With that in mind, it makes me wonder if it's even feasible to do an HD remake of the game that isn't just the sprites run through a filter.
>>
>>386079194
God no. The characters are proper sprites rather then just low resolution 2D art. Just filtering the sprites would destroy the games aesthetic
>>
>>386078262
wtf this thing is updated regularly. Why is Steve bothering with this if he's not gonna make more comics?
>>
>>386079302
Obviously filtering them would be the worst solution, but given how lazy these HD remakes tend to be I really doubt they'd do something like redrawing all of the sprites in HD.

Here's an exert showing how autisticly possessive Purcell is over S&M.

>THE BUTCHER
>The hang tag for the brand new Max plushie uses a Booga Booga pose designed long ago for a T-shirt. I had hired a local print shop to do the run of shirts.
>When I arrived to look at the sample, the ink was so think on the shirt, it had a rubbery thickness like the chest on a gorilla suit. It was then that the printer revealed that he had cut the original artwork into pieces in order to separate it.
>I was outraged and in a rare occurrence eneded up screaming my head off at the clueless lug. He only muttered that I was "one of those people who's never satisfied." I cut the order way down so that I'd still have something for the approaching convention, but stormed away never to approach The Butcher ever again.
>Because of this, the Booga Booga shirt is extra rare and its impenetrable ink will likely stop a bullet in a pinch.

Basically, on top of the remastered music sucking huge dicks when compared to the classic FM rendition, it sucks also in the technical department, with noticeable and jarring loops, not only fails to sync with the action on screen, but also actively removes the interactive quirks it once had.

Gone is the drumbeat that is supposed to play when you walk around the mansion, and stop when you stand still.
Talking to Red Edison no longer enhances his theme with those sweet harpsichord harmonies.
Fred's lab no longer transposes semitones every loop.

Also, maybe it's another of the numerous Vita version bugs, but the ending cutscene screws up everytime and I hear two songs mixed up, this also rarely happens during gameplay. And finishing the game locks up 80% of the collected concept arts. Fuck that remaster hard.

>Are Rabbids French Max?

That's not even remotely comparable. Poptepipic is objectively eastern Sam and Max in its own thing, it's just that the format is a little different and they also obviously come from a different culture.

I'm a long time fan and I read the comics enough times know what the chemistry between the duo is about. When I read the strips, the parallels with Sam and Max write themselves. I mean, Pipimi plays a fucking Banjo.
>>
>>386083337
Cutting up a creator's original art is a big no no for a guy who was part of the underground comics scene in the 80s. At least that would be my assumption about why he got so mad. There are tons of classic comics whose original artwork is lost precisely because of people just carelessly cutting it up or intentionally destroying it for no reason.
>>
>>386086443
Correction, they changed the voice of Max only for poker night 2
>>
>>386087029
MIDI doesn't have shit to do here. The only arguable thing is the semitone transposing, the rest is just sheer incompetence and by the numbers effort, in an age where multichannel .ogg are a thing.

Also, forgot about this, the theme when you approach the founding fathers is literally missing instruments out of the blue in the remaster, while it's okay in the classic. They didn't even test this crap.

Serious answer:

Stories are how we pass our values from one generation to the next. By telling a story of the hero's journey, we give children a rolemodel with our "ideal person" to base themselves around, like Hercules and Beowulf. When we tell cautionary tales, we do so to warn children of dangers, like all of Grimm's and Aesops fables. And when we tell comedy (for kids, adult comedy is different), we do so to lampoon the 'fool', to show a bad stereotype that we wouldn't want to follow, like the taming of the shrew, or most limericks.

This isn't something people are conscious of, they just do it by instinct through years of evolution. Naturally, when kids grow up, they tell stories to pass along their own values. Problem today is that people are beginning to stress how important these ideologies are, so people begin to become sensitive around these topics, and sensitivity leads to less tongue-in-cheek, despite how inappropriate for comedy it becomes.

For shows like Simpsons and South Park that run more adult humor, adult comedy is literally all about making social commentary. But again, people are becoming more and more sensitive about the topics.

Not him, but I too dislike Puzzle Agent. 1 was fantastic and nailed everything right, but holy shit 2 was a fucking mess. New characters introduced for a lame gag then dropped, awful voice acting, barely addresses or resolves any of the former games plot points unless the current plot accidentally tripped on it and had to say something, unsatisfying ending, puzzles were all a retread of 1, etc. The only thing 2 did right was remove the jigsaw puzzles of 1.
>>
>>386093472
Eh, some parts before left a little to be desired. They had hyped up insult sword fighting in magazines, and then you only do it the one time in a fight you can't win. Meanwhile, a lot of the puzzles mostly just involved exhausting dialogue options until Guybrush could do something to sabotage an item of interest.

One thing I will that Tales had over Escape was making the characters feel alive. Escape's models just felt fucking deader than the Grim Fandango cast.

>No they don't, stop being silly.

Purcells two laws about sam and max are:

-They must always be on the side of justice
-they must always make things worse before saving the day

I'm not gonna try to analyze Sam and fucking Max, but they're clearly established characters with established beliefs. Poptepic is just random violent gags

S&M is crass, while PopT. Is crude

After I got over the honeymoon phase, Thimbleweed is too full of glaring flaws other than the absolutely awful ending. One of them being that it seems Ron Gilbert still had a huge chip on his shoulder about text-based graphic adventure games and was still spouting off his tautology on the subject right from the get go despite him pioneering the adventure games that fixed modern day gaming for years and years and even made room in the market for games that literally never even put an obstacle in your way.

There's also way too much nostalgia farming, and by the time you get the Clown, you lose the plot of everything. All of the characters have this weird, deep motivation and then just join the party for no reason and then the motivations barely get worked on in a satisfying way. I know this is all to make a point about the ending, and the ending was foreshadowed, but just because you know it's coming doesn't make it not awful.

Overall, I give it a D+

That doesn't even disprove what I said you mong. Kids can have a sense of justice, doesn't mean they are fully aware of what they're doing, or when not to push things too far. Sam and Max are like the wind, they don't conform to anything but their own insticts, and in their mind what they do is justice.

It's that way with all the boards. You ever read a racing vidya thread on /v/? There's more actual discussion about cars in one of those than /o/ puts out in a week once you exclude the Corvette vs. GT-R shitposting threads.

Eh, the porn boards generally stay true to their purpose, even if /d/ has become increasingly obnoxious because of /aco/'s birth and everyone trying to police what should and shouldn't go there, while things like /h/ and /e/ are about the same as they always have been, though the latter has seen some increased inner-hostility.

What happened to telltale still makes me really sad. I loved how they used to have those neat season discs with extra content and stuff. And all that cool merch on their store. I should have bought the sam and max book when I had the chance because they just shut their store down without warning.

Family Guy, American Dad, that kind of tryhard edgy shit was oozing all over the later seasons.

It still was taken at face value. There are some exceptions, but the general tone felt way less sophisticated and more "fans of X show and modern humor are going to love this".

>>
>>386098615
I used to spend a whole lot of time there. Literally all you can discuss on that shitty board is capeshit and kids cartoons. Fuck /co/.

Every other fucking board on this site has an elitist culture to it where they are obsessed with getting high quality shit in their chosen media though of course no one can ever agree on what exactly IS the high quality shit. /co/ to contrast is happy to wallow in trash, they beg to have marvel and DC shit in their mouth, they live for it. And that's not even bringing up the cancer that are the endless generals for kids cartoons. Thank god I've excised comic books from my life, I love them but they bring me nothing but aggravation since comics will never get over their hangups about cultural perception of the medium.

And that's what the guy did, he called out the use of it. Now off since you can't contribute anything worthwhile to this shitfest.
>>
>>386099331
No he didn't, he called out the tone of it and failed to address why it was uncalled for. Fuck off yourself why don't you?
>>
>>386099675
It doesn't need further addressing. The use is never justified. You fuck off with this defense of a shitty meme speak that only brainless clods with no way to back their arguments use. The guy clearly got told he was mistaken, and then said "Yea hah!" and used the meme stutter like a kid who won't listen to any further argument.
>>
>>386099841
>It doesn't need further addressing.
False on it's premise. If someone deflects your counter-point ahead of time, it requires addressing if you feel the counter-counter point is wrong, and it must be stated as such with logic and reasoning. Failure to do so makes you a bitch boy.

I discarded the rest of your post because if you're going to open with something inherently false, you have little to contribute to the discussion.
