Thanks to the Assize buffs and Thin Air, White Mage has better burst since they can shit out tons of spells without using much MP. Consequently, they have a higher damage ceiling than Scholar. Still, Scholar puts out a lot of consistent damage, so they have a higher floor. The new Miasma II also puts out damage on contact in addition to a DoT, so Scholar's AoE is back despite the Bane nerfs. Overall, you'll have higher damage potential as a White Mage, but you'll get more consistent damage as a Scholar, so they're in an alright spot for DPS, I'd say. Astro is still the lowest of the three, but not by overly much I think. And yeah, you need crit to have your Adlos be worth the MP now. Astro stole our role as the shield healer with the crazy Nocturnal buffs they got.

I really love the Azim Steppe, it's my favorite area in this game. But you know what could have made it even better? We could have had some FFXIII-style Adamantoises walking around. I'm not sure about gathering or crafting jobs, but tanking and healing roles generally have an easier time leveling since dungeon queues range from milliseconds to a couple of minutes. Leveling a DPS is a good way to give yourself plenty of free time to level a gathering/crafting class, though.
