How could Nintendo create the platformer genre and then dominate it for decades? Why does so few companies create platformer games? Making a 2D platformer would be very cheap for big companies yet they completely ignore it.

So what animes have you been watching chums?
>>
nintendo didn't make a good platform game in years

3D World, Planet Robobot, Woolly World, NSMBU, and Tropical Freeze are all 8/10 or better. So you are wrong.

I don't want to admit it, but I really enjoyed Kemono Friends.
>>
>>386034752
All of those except for Tropical Freeze are average for Nintendo platformers, yet still dominate most the competition.
>>
>>386034890
3D World is the best 3D Mario, and NSMBU is tied with World for second best 2D Mario.
>>
Nintendo hasn't made a good platformer since Mario 64.

>How could Nintendo create the platformer genre and then dominate it for decades? Why does so few companies create platformer games? Making a 2D platformer would be very cheap for big companies yet they completely ignore it.

In what way have they dominated?
The only good platformer from Nintendo for fucking ages was Tropical Freeze.

Are you being serious? The Galaxy games were easily better games.

Damn son did you bring enough bad opinions for the whole class?
>>
>>386035174
Galaxy was great, with new ideas, only for Galaxy 2 to promptly do... absolutely nothing.
3D World, while being more simplistic, has far better level design.
>>
>>386035175
Those games are baby tier compared to Mario 64 which was already way too easy.
>>
>>386035174
The Galaxy games are great, but they aren't focused enough and have less content. Not to mention 3D World had a more fitting soundtrack.
>>
>>386034274
Because big publishers prefer to invest money in big projects for an off-chance they'll create another COD or WoW. Platformers can sell pretty well but they have limited mainstream appeal.
>>
>>386034274
platformers was a thing before Nintendo
>>
>>386034274
making open world games is now cheaper than making 2D platformers.

>>
>>386035281
Mario 64 is the better game for sure, but you have to be pretty delusional to think Tropical Freeze was an easier game.

The only good level design in the game is the star levels and champions road. And the control hurts the game more than necessary.
>>
>>386035302
>Platformers can sell pretty well but they have limited mainstream appeal.
Some Mario games sell like tens of millions. That's why I'm so confused by it because there's obviously a demand for platformer games, it used to be a huge part of the industry and every company called it quits except Nintendo.
>>
>>386035446
You're telling me that they have "dominated" the platformer market? Fuck off.
>>
>>386034274
There have been plenty of non-Nintendo platformers released over the years. Nobody gives a shit because no nostalgia. This will of course change, since most kids today don't grow up on Nintendo games.

Untrue, Mario sells because of brand recognition and nostalgia, not because people want platformers.

>>386035475
Mario Games sell millions because of recognition and Nintendo fans. Making another Mario would be much more expensive than just trying to make a more mainstream franchise. So while Ubisoft managed to make AssCreed into a cashcow Franchise, they would never manage to do the same with Rayman.
>>
>>386035670
TLoU has worse AI and environment interaction than the 15 year old game in that guy's avatar.
but that's neogaf for you
>>
>>386035446
3DWorld and the NSMB are a fucking disgrace compared to previous 2D and 3D Marios, take your consolewar helmet off for once
>>
>>386035670
Yet Crash trilogy sales say otherwise.
>>
Back in the day, Nintendo had an ad train that Sony would be jealous of, so large that it still sticks today. Also Nintendo didn't invent the platformer.
>>
>>386035621
Oh, fuck off.
>>386035657
What about other companies like Mega-Man? Castlevania? There are plenty of series that sells, that sony platformer game shows that.
>>
>>386034274
Its probably the same reason Bethesda dominates the OWFPSRPG genre. Everyone thinks they have a strangle hold and it would be to much effort to try and break into it.
>>
>>386035987
Sony's audience as well? Crash did well.

>>
>>386036198
That's only because of nostalgia though. I doubt a new Crash game would sell so well.
>>
>>386035446
I played them all, 3D world was made for 4 players, otherwise its an average game
>>
>>386034274
I actually miss platforming in games where it wasn't even the main mechanic. Double Dragon on the nes, and a bunch of adventure games come to mind. Why did games abandon this? It seems today if your character ever has to jump over anything a button appears on screen amd the game jumps for you when you press it. Makes them kinda boring to me.

>>386034274
>How could Nintendo create the platformer genre
Are you 12?
>>
>>386036787
Not him and i guess there were games like that before super mario bros, but im having a hard time to think about some platformer before NES that is not too primitive to consider it a proper precedent.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_game
>Platform games originated in the early 1980s. Because of the technical limitations of the day, early examples were confined to a static playing field, generally viewed in profile. Space Panic, a 1980 arcade release by Universal, is sometimes credited as being the first platform game, though the distinction is contentious. While the player had the ability to fall, there was no ability to jump, swing, or bounce, so the game does not satisfy most modern definitions of the genre. However, it clearly influenced the genre, with gameplay centered on climbing ladders between different floors, a common element in many early platform games.

Craft the peak of the genre when the hunger for platformers was at its highest, then once all challengers to the throne died off, because it's not just enough to make a too-cool-for-school animal and put some obstacles in his way in hop over, Nintendo continues to release acclaimed titles every so often.

Think about it, think about all those magazine advertisements and TV commercials about some wacky animal challenging an anonymous plumber or ripping apart a red hat. They're all dead, sad novelties of the 16-bit and early 3D era.

It's cheap to create a platformer compared to a AAA multiplayer FPS, sure, but it's also cheaper and more lucrative to just create some dumb swiping/tapping autorun thing on mobile and cram some microtransactions.
>>
>>386034274

Your argument would make more sense if we are talking 3D Platforming

Mario is STILL the only relevant one for all this time since 64

We do have the crash remake but it's still just a remake

it doesnt get hard until the special final world. only the last two levels are hard, and one of them is an endurance run of all the green box levels in a row. the level in the webm is the other final level and it is a bitch and a half
i beat everything with rosalina (ez mode) and mario and i'm up to the bowser theme park place with the other 3 now
