P5 doesn't have the best designed cover know to man, but it gives you a good impression of what the game's going to be like. On the other hand, ME:A's cover shows a space marine, a barren moon and a downed space ship, giving you the impression it's about a dude surviving on a hostile planet, when the game's about exploring an uncharted galaxy.

If it's done right, it relays a powerful image about the pictured protagonist heading out on this epic journey into the great unknown, full of mystery and fantastic worlds, all while applying the design principle of minimalism. Imagine the Breath of the Wild cover where link is on top of the mountain. Ideally it would be that same type image, but scaled much further back, as to portray the size and scope of what lies ahead.

Pictures such as the P5 cover look crowded and overwhelming, from a design standpoint, and don't really relay any of those subtextual concepts I mentioned. it's a much more practical design that basically tries to say "wow, look at me! big shiny colors in your face! here's all the characters of the game you're about to play! They're probably interesting, so play the game to find out!" It's extremely practical and to-the-point. Not a fault, just a culture difference.

However, games that make covers like ME:A miss the entire point of the potential it has and go for the "people look badass and mysterious when their back is turned to an explosion" route.

Yakuza 0 is pretty great.

Most boxart is shit because companies are too lazy and cheap to pay out real talented and creative artists to hand draw and paint something grand to be the forefront of their game cover. Back in the day companies put real effort and money into their product from the cover to the color multi page instructions booklet. There's so many fantastical handrawn gem covers on oldschool NES and SNES/GENESIS games. Nowadays it's take one character and slap him on the box with the most minimal of colors (usually just black and white with red text cuz you gotta save money on color ink yo) and it's not even drawn just reused assets of the game like a cg cutout. Why hire someone and pay them good money for their skills when you can just ask one of the programmers to boot up his super xnalara renderer and take a quick pose and use that!

Left is the original done by Ayima Kojima who has been the primary artist for the series since the 90s and the right is the one for the sequel to Aria of Sorrow which she did not work on.

She has a very distinct and good art style but she's been on record saying it's not as marketable, something along the lines of 'people aren't interested in my kind of art'. I can try and dig up the source if you want me to.
