They are no where near the same level as the original books. I read every one of the tie ins because I'm a massive Dune fag and they are just aren't as good. Not to say they're necessarily bad writing, The Butlerian Jihad series has some really good moments, but they are much more... action oriented? I guess. Not as philosophical. Didn't have many moments that really makes you stop and contemplate life like the originals did. Not to sound pretentious but it's the difference between watching a really deep movie that was clearly a passion project, and watching the latest Marvel superhero movie. The marvel shit isn't awful but it's a difference animal. A lot of people will say they're absolute shit, which they aren't, they are just kinda meh compared what Frank Herbert wrote.

No, they're not. They have have a simple to follow plot and very high production values, and in return the make billions of dollars. They definitely aren't my favorite movies at all (in fact I don't even like comic book movies), but calling them awful is just being contrarian. The Incredible Bulk is awful. Birdemic is awful. The Last Airbender is awful. If you think the recent Marvel movies come anywhere close to those cimetatic bags of liquid shit, you've probably only seen like, 4 movies in your life. It's been a long time since I read them but I was pretty sure that Paul was at least somewhat aware due to his limited prescience that humanity was approaching extinction due to complacency. He just didn't know exactly why or from what. I know he couldn't see nearly as far ahead into the future as his son could but I thought he had a vague idea. And he came to the conclusion that a bloody and brutal jihad was necessary for humanity to survive, I definitely don't think he started his war just for personal power. Maybe not in the first book but definitely later on he knew something was coming.
