>GameStop’s stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day this year, the company told staff during a series of conference calls this morning, according to two people who were on those calls. It’s a change in policy that has upset some employees of the massive video game retail chain.

Anyone else think this is wrong? like who the fuck seriously goes shopping on thanksgiving anyway
>>
People who eat dinner with their families then realize they hate them so they go shopping afterwards.

Retail shitter here. More than you think. Doesn't help that the last store that I was at started their black firday deals Thanksgiving afternoon.
>>
I'm sure lots of people might go shopping on Thanksgiving for stuff they need to prepare for dinner.
I'm not so sure people are shopping for fucking video games though
>>
Eh I hate my family so I'll be working it.

There are lots of restaurants that do christmas dinners.

Not a word about that in the news..
>>
The worse kind of human scum. The worse part is besides the extremely limited door busters most of the deals go for the whole weekend.
>>
>>385946142
People need gas to drive around, especially on Thanksgiving. People need food to survive, and also benefits Thanksgiving, obviously. People do not need a video game from a brick-and-mortar chain at all hours of the day, especially a holiday, and definitely not in the digital age.
>>
>>385945871

Black Friday hasn't existed for years, all the stores do their biggest sales thursday evening, aka thanksgiving
Tons of stores are open on Thanksgiving now

Go fuck yourself, it's a job not a charity, if the owners think people might want to buy stuff that day, they'll open the store, like any restaurant or food chain. Just because you don't feel like getting out of your house that day, doesn't make it a rule for everyone else. If the employees don't like it, they can quit and find a job that suits their special needs. People who work that day will probably get a day-off some other day and I know plenty of people who would rather work in a holiday because of the happy vibes and stay home on a normal day.
>>

grocery stores are usually open on thanksgiving day, so are some restaurants. they do this because if they closed then they lose out on a huge day of sales and profit from people doing last-minute preparations. workers usually get a say in whether or not they have to work that day though, and a lot of high schoolers usually work that day because they get extra pay out of working holiday.

Retail shitter as well. Fuckers were literally RUNNING out of the cars while they were still moving to grab overpriced shit. We watched from the loading dock and laughed at all of them.
>But Anon, it's on a HUGE discount!
Hue. No.
>>
If you really want the day off for family then put it as ones of your paid holiday days in advance.
It's not complicated. I don't even get holiday days and I ask off Christmas like 3-4 months in advance so I can spend time with family.
>>
Would rather spend the extra money instead of dealing with the crowds fuck black friday
>>
I don't understand Black Friday.
Most of the sales aren't very good at all, and it doesn't make sense why companies would give their best sales right before the Holidays.

I always thought the best sales came in February/March.
>>
anyone else voluntarily take up shifts on holidays? like i get paid 2x more and it gives me an excuse to not see family.
>>
Who cares? Retail workers are NPC tier.
>>
I hate holidays and birthdays and any kind of stupid date that's made important for no reason. So if I get paid triple to work during a "holiday" better for me, retards that think they can only eat with their family once a day are retarded, they can eat with them any other day of the year and get paid triple if they work that day.
>>
>>385946830
Other retailers have been letting out their holiday sales earlier and earlier, to the point that many of them start on thanksgiving day now. Gamestop as a company has been going down the shitter really hard these past few years, so now they're banking on a longer holiday season to make up for their usual deficit.

Honestly, it depends on what you are looking for and how knowledgeable you are about prices.

Games usually have pretty good discounts, but most stores offer similar deals to each other and repeat deals on monday. Best Buy and Amazon both have some decent online sales, and I made out pretty well last year. Its also not a bad time to buy a console either.

For stuff like TVs, laptops, tablets, or most consumer electronics? It is mostly a scam, since those models tend to be cheap ass versions or by a less then stellar company that did not sell well during the year and they want to get rid of it.

Yes you can. The US postal service is ALWAYS hiring and they make over $15/hr starting. It goes up to $20 after you get some experience in.
Or become a delivery driver, bartender, server, etc. Tipped employees usually rake in over $20/hr in cities.

So GameStop gets hundreds of applications per month. It also takes less time to train an employee to work there than it does at McDonald's. Because of this, they can get away with treating their employees worse than practically any other retail company in the US. Employees are treated as if they should be privileged just to work there.

If you say no to working on Thanksgiving, you will get fired. The only alternative is to not work there.
>>
I used to be a store manager.

Gamestop black friday is a joke. They have no deals better than other stores, and are at best a tertiarty visit by black friday shoppers.

They have us open at 5 or 6 am and almost every time we might see at best a few customers before 8 am.

Corporate has NEVER figured out why the stores aren't a hot destination on black friday. I'm sure this change is because they think it has to do with the stores not having a jump on other people.

The best part is, nobody will get bonus pay for working thanksgiving except for keyholder employees, and even then probably just the store manager and asm.

People still aren't going to go to gamestop on thanksgiving, and corporate still won't know why the hell not.

Former store manager, you'd lose your job.

Moving costs a lot of money, even just in renting a new place you need to put down a first/last month rent and security deposit, relocation costs, and be cushioned enough to look for work at the new place, let alone going there to actually find a place ahead of time.

It's blatantly obvious when people who haven't had to handle things like this talk about it.

I would argue that there is such a thing as collective self-interest - that is, supporting things that benefit a larger group will in some way improve their own conditions. It's the reason why in some communist revolutions, the urban and rural poor have supported such revolutions. They've seen tangible benefits for themselves in the form of improved education, healthcare, and working conditions. See my video as an example of why people in Cuba fucking loved Castro and his revolution.

Also, the human nature argument against communism is really dumb because there is no singular "human nature." Humans are capable of a myriad of behaviors, and I would argue that the most common behaviors are a product of environment. Is it any surprise that people are greedy when we live in a society that promotes greed and competition above all else?

Otherwise, I will agree that greed and corruption have had a role in undermining communist revolutions, especially when there is a centralized party and bureaucratic apparatus, one of the major flaws with any socialist system modeled on Leninism.

Venezuela isn't socialist. Certainly they're ruled by a party that espouses socialism, but the country itself is not socialist. Most of the industry in the country is privately owned. A large part of their problems are due to the fact that the government decided to fund most of their social services though oil revenue, and when oil prices fell, their revenue fell drastically. Also, they fucked up hard on attempts to redistribute agricultural land, most of which was owned by large landowners. As a consequence, they now have to import most of their food.

Technically speaking, you can make any wage living if you put in enough hours but when people say living wage, what they mean is if you can live on that wage in a full time job, IE 40 hours a week. If you have to add additional hours above that limit, then the wage isn't a living wage anymore. Of course there are other reasons for working more than 40 hours a week but that's a different matter.

It isn't. Socialism is, by definition, any system in which the workers own the means of production, distribution, and exchange. If it does not meet these criteria, it is not socialism. Also, I know that pic is just a meme, but the Soviet Union killed nowhere near 50% of its own population. Even under Stalin, when there were famines and people getting sent to the gulag, the population kept growing despite this. The population of the Soviet Union only declined when Germany invaded and killed millions of soldiers and civilians.

Right, his budget is missing things, and it calls for an irregular deal on an apartment that would see the person sharing a 5-600 sq ft space with another adult in order to get by, while living a starvation diet and needing their job to be within easy walking distance.

It's just GameStop trying to stay alive. Unfortunately for them, nobody is going to go early Black Friday shopping at GameStop for "sweet deals" on Funko pops and shitty "le epic reddit nerd" merchandise. No reason to shop at GameStop when Amazon Prime and Best Buy's Gamers Club Unlocked exists. Used games can be bought on eBay/Craigslist for a lot cheaper than you'd find them at GameStop, and you'd actually get a case for your game too.

Don't be surprised if they go bankrupt soon. RadioShack did the same thing before they filed.

That's it. That's literally it. That's all the socialism anyone needs and it works. The biggest problem isn't the form of government, it's how corrupt the government is. And your math doesn't add up top 1% actually already pays 20+% of taxes on 13% of the pretax income and and top 20% is something like 70% of the tax on 50% of income.

Tax evasion is underreporting or hiding income to avoid taxes. Tax avoidance is the perfectly legal procedure, of often times using accountants to pay the minimum possible amount of taxes you can legally. Everyone should do it within their abilities, it's just not worth thr cost of doing so for most of us.

The base income tax is only that for the lazy. They're not loopholes, they're intentionally there so you pay less tax.

It's a fucking stupid system I agree, but the general public does not understand taxes, so if you theoretically got rid of most write offs and lower the marginal tax rate on the rich to 20% people would riot because they wouldn't understand you didn't actually lower their taxes.

Canada's equivalent to Black Friday is Boxing Day
>>
>>385948425

Former SM as well. Everyone in corporate or on a executive level have no damn idea about what customers actual do and want.

The first problem GameStop has is the fact that it's a speciality store meaning that unless you specifically want video games or some Think Geek shit you're not going there. Most of the video game and console sales they have during Black Friday aren't very different from their competitors. This means that people shopping somewhere like Best Buy or Wal-Mart are probably just going to buy their games there while they try to snag deals on TVs, appliances, and other things GameStop doesn't sell. Then if there are any good deals like new system bundles with games or something, stores will probably get 4 or 5 of them that'll sell out at midnight.

From what I remember with my last holiday there, the big Black Friday sale was B2G1 on used games and pre-packaged used system "bundles" but no one wants to buy uses shit for Christmas. Most people just came in to buy gift cards instead.

You're kinda right and he's kinda right. Anyone can better themselves they just need to have the drive. I was tired of working shitty jobs so I spent one year working at some local tree care company, went and got my arborist certification and now I'm making 70k a year with just one year of experience and a piece of paper. It's not amazing, but considering I was making near minimum wage for like 3 years to now making almost double that it feels alright.

And this isn't extraordinary, almost every industry has higher paying positions available to anyone willing to get some certifications and make some connections. It sucks, but that's how it is.

Spoken like a true retard, poverty in America is already vastly above average life in China for the overwhelming majority of Chinese. You're talking about people who live in such dire straits that they literally recycle cooking oil flowing through their sewers and reuse it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutter_oil

You're talking about people who make and sell fucking fake eggs because it's just that little bit cheaper. Pic related.

You're talking about a country where the overwhelming majority of mothers import baby formula because Chinese baby formula is so dogshit that they know it can't be trusted.

Next you'll be retarded enough to say that Pyongyang is representative of North Korea as a whole.
>>
>>385957620
No longer possible in our modern society unless you move out into the middle of fucking nowhere. And even doing that costs money. Most people, because of the conditions in which they live, are essentially forced to sell their services to a company. There are no other viable alternatives unless you have the luxury of being born with money. Even then, if you found a small company, odds are you'll be out-competed by the larger companies and go out of business. Saying that you have options other than wage labor is an illusion. For the wage laborer, who forms the basis of any company and without whom the wealthy would not have their wealth, it is not unreasonable at all to ask for more from their employer.

Other than the Switches gamestop sells on clout alone and forces into bundles due to supply issues, why would I buy Switch games there? Amazon and Best Buy both have memberships that make the game 20% cheaper, and I have the Amazon one anyway. Why pay $60 at gamestop when I can pay $48 at Amazon?

This is Gamestop's real issue, they're a specialty store in an era where their commodity is not special enough that it's worth going to a dedicated store for. You aren't going there to find an obscure game because you could do that on Ebay. You aren't going there to get a game recommendation because you can read reviews online. You aren't going there to sell your used games because there are trade-in programs online. You aren't going there to save money because there are better savings via services you are highly likely to already use. And you almost certainly aren't going there to window shop because nowadays you are vastly more likely to do that the next time you wander through a Wal-Mart/Target/etc.

A model based on large selection has high inventory costs and rent to sales ratio. While amazon had neither and still wins in selection. I still go thete sometimes because the ebgames near me has vita games every so often for actually really cheap because they can't get rid of them. The one nice thing, since amazon obviously doesn't have that problem quite as bad.

Technically resources are unlimited, but the access to those resources are limited by technology. For instance, fracking opened up huge oil and gas reserves, pit mining increased the output of metals, etc. At a certain point the resources of space will be available to us if technology improves enough. The same goes for availability of products. Automation will improve productivity until there is an abundance of available products with little to no human labor involved (except for management and maintenance). When such a large portion of the population is no longer committed to production and there's an abundance of resources, is there really any need to justify work in the traditional sense?

That's not unlimited.
Even if the universe is infinite. Some resources are only on earth which has a set landmass and are all subject to scarcity. I want steak. You can't have infinite cows. Simple as that.
>>
>>385959926
Basically a cocktail of starch, resin, coagulant, and pigments. You make an egg white, sodium alginate to thicken it together, resin again and pigments for the yolk, wax, gypsum and calcium carbonate for the shell.

Vat-grown meat is a real possibility in the not too distant future. It's very expensive right now, but the cost will come down as the technology scales up. Barring that, you could always put growing land on other planets. This obviously wouldn't be a near term prospect, and I don't think scarcity will go away in the near future (probably not for a few centuries, assuming we don't nuke ourselves before then) but the possibility is there.

>>385961123
Yeah, instead you have to worry that the "peace keeper" will dismember you if you end up on the wrong side of the mafia, because the two are so intertwined that it is difficult to differentiate between the two. That is, unless you're so poor that they have no interest in you, in which case you are living in squalor and likely to die young of numerous health complications.

BTW, that obviously assumes that you are just Chinese instead of a minority in China, because Chinese racism makes American racism look like nothing.

Of course, if you're just an idealistic young white person you can likely easily make a living being the white face of a Chinese company, where you can earn good money by showing up to business meetings and looking English-speaking and foreign. Then you'll just have a few months before your prolonged direct exposure with Chinese culture makes you resent China.
>>
>>385961415
And you don't think the price will continue to drop? At a certain point it might become cheaper to produce than regular beef. Right now it's about $44 a pound, compared to an average of around $4 per pound for ground beef. It used to be about tens of thousands times more expensive just a few years ago. That's tremendous progress, and to assume that it won't improve more is ridiculous.
>>
>>385961937
I meant the opposite of what I think you believe I did. A lot of people vaguely remember the lab grown burger as a $300k+ pet project as opposed to the $11 lab exercise it has become.

Within a decade or so we'll have to start having a serious argument about the viability of lab grown meat on a lower budget. A fitting stopgap is also insect-based protein e.g. grasshopper burgers. Both have face issues with image but environmental and ethical benefits.

>>385963054
Cite a non-Chinese article which positively portrays quality of life as going up from anywhere but abysmal. Citing economic growth doesn't count because there are severe issues with wealth inequality (hint: China has a "capitalist" class that gets to take their ball and go home as long as they pay lip service and taxes).

Also, the only current real social mobility up for most Chinese -assuming you don't win a gold medal or something which is automatic promotion- is real estate, the only thing they're allowed to inherit on paper. China's economy is in no small part based in "ghost cities" designed to serve as inheritance vectors for its new generation, but it's a bubble set to explode because they don't have parties with the money or interest to actually occupy the land and thus turn the real estate into a tangible value.
