I remember how some critics were completely outraged at the Little Germany amusement park shooting since it showed children getting shot.
Thing is, the scene is completely ridiculous because despite hundreds of people being there ONLY the kids (and the disabled guy) seemed to get hit and the hypocritical stuff by the reporter afterwards is pretty much the icing on the cake.

How else would they do it? The setting of the movie takes place in an arcade and you're following the story of a dated arcade game villain. They need to advertise that on the poster.

If they just threw Ralph and Vanellope there, it wouldn't have said anything about the movie and nobody would know who they are. If they made all original characters, nobody would know they were from classic arcade vidya.

To be honest I would have put even more characters because that poster looks really swallow, there's a bunch of vidya characters just awkardly stading in the background, they're all stiff and just there aside Zangief. It really lacks impact and despite the decent number of cameos it looks empty.

A good alternative would have been having a poster with Ralph and the manlet in pixel graphics confronting each other.
While looking better him, that would lack the "hey guys come to see the cameos and pay us" part, which is very important for business.

If Hollywood makes a good video game movie, they advertise to their audience that video games can be an alternative source for narrative and thematic art. They would be advertising their own competitors if Assassin's Creed was actually any good. The continued embarrassment of video game films helps play a role in the persisting notion among most normies that video games cannot be art.
The only real chance we had a good video game movie so far was Final Fantasy, but that sucked too. I say that was the only real chance because it is my belief that we will not get a good video game movie until some game studio steps up and opens their own production studio a la Marvel. I guess maybe Ratchet and Clank may have been another real chance as well, but I'm not familiar with how involved Insomniac was in the film and I heard it was quite shit.
