Bullshit, that only first came up in the DLC. The main game had zero indication of her being a lesbian. In fact, the main game was one of the few games to do gay characters right--Bill was gay, but it didn't affect him at all because he actually had a personality that didn't revolve around his sexuality; the game didn't shove it in your face and a lot of people even missed the fact that he was gay. Then along comes the DLC and it retcons thirteen-year-old Ellie into being a lesbian in an underage biracial relationship, and it shoves it in your face and the developers and actors parade it around in interviews and articles. It makes sense, though, considering The Last of Us started development in 2009, when the liberal batshit craziness was just confined to the internet and ignored by society, while Left Behind was started in 2013, right as the identity politics meme was gaining tremendous mainstream popularity. The reason this interpretation (I don't care that it's the writer himself saying it) doesn't work is that Druckmann is an idiot and wrote the Fireflies to be incompetent single-digit IQ retards. The entire fucking game you're coming across dead Fireflies. They got their asses kicked in Boston, the team at the Capitol tasked with transporting Ellie, the "cure for humanity," across the entire country got easily massacred by the military while you, one man with little ammo, managed to get past them. The team at the university were incompetent retards who packed up their whole lab and left after the whole thing turned out to be a mismanaged disaster. Their top scientist was a clinical retard who got himself killed by a fucking monkey. The patrol by the hospital knock out Joel as he's performing lifesaving CPR on their previous cure. The entire legion of heavily-armed Fireflies at the hospital fail to prevent one man from reaching the operating room. The surgeons performing the most important operation in human history consist of one guy who maybe looks like he knows what he's doing and two nurses who were at most kids when the outbreak hit.

Druckmann's idea of the ending presents this grand moral dilemma between saving Ellie or saving the world with a cure, but it's not a dilemma at all because there was literally zero chance for a cure and zero chance for that hypothetical cure to actually change the world. The real dilemma came from Joel lying to Ellie in order to keep her and in the process depriving her of what she felt was her duty--to die and sacrifice herself for what she thought was the greater good, so that everything she'd done and experienced and everyone she'd watched die would have served a purpose, as well as risking his relationship and trust with her just to keep her alive. Druckmann literally misinterprets his own fucking story--damning humanity isn't a concern at all. Joel did nothing wrong.

The whole thing is ruined by the sequel.

Hey everyone! For those of you who want to read the story that TLOU plagiarized heavily from, go ahead and check it out.

I think any amount of speculation as to what the ending of TLOU 'really' means is pointless, since the entire story is a mess from start to finish. As other anons have noted, there is no moral dilemma at stake here. There is no sense of feeling as if Joel may be doing the wrong thing, although the game desperately tries to present it as such. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is extremely cliche and uninteresting, designed to appeal to thirty year old neckbeards with no cute daughterfus to protect.

Anyone who seriously thinks TLOU is some pinnacle of game design or cinematic storytelling knows NOTHING about either. The comparison I always like to make when it comes to dismissing TLOU's ending (Which is again, the only aspect of the story that anyone seems to care about) is to compare it to an truly classic ending to a film. The ending to the Godfather.
