Exactly. Since it is so linear, why not have a teleporter to get back to a previous area. There is unlikely to be any map changes that make you want to explore for hidden areas or sequence breaks. A person will mst likely find all the collectables they can get with their current gear, find 2 or 3 that require a power up you don't have yet, and move on. THis just eliminates the player gong through the same corridors again after getting said power up to get to those collectables.

By having unlockable hidden shafts between the core? Traversing those would take literally the same amount of time as the main shaft, the world is vertically stacked. It doesn't solve any problems.

By making the entire thing skippable with the speedbooster? Unless they make major changes to it that one works in one direction, getting from the top to the bottom of the shaft is still a hassle. Having to build up shinesparks casually to move around the world is a bad idea anyway.

Hidden elevators? Those are the same thing as a teleporter, just with different window dressing. It's a doorway that takes you automatically from one room on the map to another one on the other side of the map in an instant.

Metroid 2 is not Super Metroid, even if the fanbase things every game should retroactively be changed to match the latter. It's not designed to be a large interconnected labyrinth, the games built around smaller dungeon-sized labyrinths that ramp up in difficulty. The closest game to Metroid 2 structurally is Echoes, which shockingly enough also provided warp rooms for the player by the end of the game that worked perfectly fine.

I disagree. If the platforming is significantly changed by your available powerups upon backtracking, then it becomes even better than an all new room. In that kind of scenario an old challenge has become completely changed by your new powers, and so you get a tangible sense of growth in your power.
Red Tower is one of my favourite single rooms in any game simply because of how much it changes to fit the mood of your advance through the game.
When you first enter it's just a bottomless pit, forcing you down what seems like a point of no return and trapping you for the next several hours. When you finally return with the Ice Beam, it's a triumphant experience to finally be able to conquer the challenge which has kept you confined for so long and finally break out onto the planet's surface. When you return with the Power Bombs and then the Grappling Beam, you have good opportunity to apply those abilities in meaningful ways too. That's even before you get to sequence breaking.

For the record, this particular room (which has the most backtracking in the whole game as required by the standard path) only requires that you go through it 4 times, and all of those have new variations.

What I'm getting at is this - a well designed Metroidvania uses its backtracking to contextualize your adventure.

But then again, Metroid II isn't designed like most Metroidvanias. It's a fairly linear and straightforward hunt and destroy mission. If you're following that kind of design, then go ahead and use teleporters.
