I feel like this is more understandable as long as the character in question has something that a player could easily relate to, like a family member. If it's a friend, I'd agree that they should flesh them out more, but killing off a character to set a revenge plot up or something is pretty normal. Cutscenes with crying and blubbering MCs early on in the game is pretty cheeseball, like Last of Us.
