Nothing. Yugioh is a terrible card game.

Magic's problem with video games is just Wizards being jews and refusing to make a good video game adaptation. Everything's either gimped like hell in card selection or has a UI straight out of 2001.

Pokemon's problem is that EX cards are pure fucking cancer but I can't fault the online client for that. It's by far the best modern online card game (fuck hearthstone, though it's still overall better than yugioh) and the two gameboy color games are the best card games period.

It makes for better video games since generally the game is faster and with less things to manage.
I prefer tabletops and board games to video games by a large margin, but video games don't require preptime, teaching someone the rules, and almost always allow you to simply play by yourself. Yugioh is a much simpler card game at its core than Magic, but I'd put it similar to Pokemon currently.
Even Links, Xyz and Synchros are easy enough to fit into a 5 minute tutorial. There's a reason Duel Links is one of Konami's most profitable games. It's fast and mindless/.

That said, there's no competition anyways. Wizards only has MTGO and Duels, which are absolute garbage. Pokemon has 2 GBC games but they have a solid online client. And Vanguard has 3 3DS games that have not and never will be released in the states.

And it's not like Yugioh has a good video game post 2011 either, because Legacy of the Duelist sucks.

For starters, a Metagame has always been in the game since set 1, so it doesn't make sense for CD-I to say META because that'd mean the entire game's life and isn't a format nor a golden age.
Secondly, the template is supposed to be OoT gives a straight answer, LoZ gives no-nonsense, WW innocence, TP edgy, AS weird, CD-I punchline.
What it should be is OoT saying GX, because that's when most "normal" people grew out of it, LoZ saying GOAT Control, WW saying non-tryhards, alternatively not having a golden age because he's a kid, TP Dragon Rulers, AS Bandai Cards, CD-I making a season zero or duelist kingdom joke.

Pendulums have two different effects depending on where you put them on the field. It's not Monster + Spell at the same time.
They used to let you spam the field though. Used to.

I'm pretty sure Links were created to balance the game since they limit the amount of extra deck monsters you can summon.

my biggest gripe with YGO comes with the hyper specific tribal support cards. I loved it when it was Thousand Knives or Dark Magic Attack because those felt unique and iconic to an Ace monster, but now half of the cards reference other cards. Everything is built off of each other rather than having a cool effect like Man Eater Bug

The problem with it and match winners in general is that the very thing is they can't stop you.
Getting very technical, you are only allowed to surrender on your turn. You scooping with victory dragon attacking directly for lethal means you accept the outcome and lose the match. This almost never comes up though, so almost everyone just forgets and probably never will remember because match winners will always be banned. You cannot say

If Victory Dragon connected for game, or the boardstate was so it would, you might as well just walk to the local fastfood joint because it's over.

I like duel links, but a lot of the people I play have very samey decks. I have run into a machine deck or and Pegasus deck only once or twice so far in the dozens of pvp games I've done. Too much dragon and spellcaster support.

I got three friends to play Twitter edition on duel network for a couple of nights, it's normal ban list + ban on all cards with active descriptions of more than 256 characters. It was fun for 24 hours until someone got a meta lead and we realized we'd have to put actual work in to keep up.

Honestly the character design is pretty good. I love the destiny hero guy and even the edgy "damage in duel is real" guy.

But they were literally used to showcase the newer archetypes, so the only reason to watch the first 102+eps is just because of the duels.
The second half I guess they realize they haven't given Jaden any character depth or a partner so they fabricate a nonsensical story for that purpose.

It lacks authenticity and the genuineness of manga-based works. It reinforced the idea that the show is an advertisement for the game.

I never got the appeal. I only played Yugioh for like a minute. Seriously to it was about a minute of playtime. I sat in for a buddy at school one time and made some plays or whatever you would call it.

Besides that I did like the show a bit. However I just was never that into it and eventually stopped caring at all. I loved the Pokemon trading card game for GBC.

The condition that you die if you play "the" card is a bit over the top, but besides that the story was great. Atem got some real character development and so did Mai and Joey. Kaiba faced the truth of his father's wrongdoings and actually felt sympathy for someone that's not called Mokuba.
Millenium World is spectacular and would work perfect as a movie set in Egypt (or at least a virtual one). The potential for choreographies in Monster fights is great.
The story is the best of them all and Zorc having a dick doesn't really take away from it, there's been far more weirder stuff in YGO anyway.
The downside is the anime included the Kaiba/Kisara backstory but Kaz did not have the luxury to do so.

Arc-V suffered from having:
A) A reduced animation budget since ZEXAL took it all;
B) Hiring so many high-cost seiyuus that eventually the main characters had to stop talking;

6) An unlikable MC who never properly developed; unlike Yuma who converted people with the power of KATTUBINGU, Yuya would just brute-force people to accept his opinion, and the writers let it happen;
7) A complete bastardization of once-beloved characters, as well as the unsanctimonious misuse of Super Poly;

You never played YGO before? In the cartoon they spend half the episode explaining every card effect, 1 quarter showing attack animations and another quarter on people explaining the plot, so of course the actual game is much quicker.
