Why are there no "hidden gems" in vidya anymore? What's your favorite hidden gem?
>>
>>385880645
it's not that hidden since dragon slayer was a pretty popular series, but faxanadu remains one of my favorite games from early childhood and a game that probably even a lot of people who had an nes never played. i really enjoyed it a lot.

i think they had this game in an arcade cabinet back at the ice hockey rink i played at when i was like 10 years old, i probably spent like close to $100 on that cabinet. i had no idea what i was doing but my character ended up being one of the top ten on the machine just from me playing so much.

This game kind of went under the radar even though I have over a hundred hours in multiplayer. It's a shame because it has some of the best AI I've ever seen, and it's pretty innovative for an RTS game. There are no units, just a free market economy which fluctuates heavily based on the supply and demand of the player companies. So it's all about trying to monopolize resource production to out-jew all the other players. Also, there's a black market you can buy stuff on to sabotage other players anonymously, but if they have a goon squad on the tile you try to sabotage, everyone finds out you're a dirty rat.

>>
>>385881019
I was really interested in this, but I figured that its the kind of game to get stale after you've played it once. What gives it replayablity?
>>
There are hidden gems, you just can't find them because they're hidden. By definition they shouldn't be easy to find.

Though what some of you people consider hidden "gems" is absolute trash.
>>
>>385880645
Because the only shit that gets released is AAA trash or indie garbage.
>>
Because games blow up and get popular followings with the internet, so the opportunity of missing a game on its release really isn't a thing anymore.

Does Alan Wake count? I feel like I never see anyone talk about it. If not that then probably Hotel Dusk, Lego Racers or Alien Infestation.

Multiplayer, randomly generated maps with different resource scarcities, resource prices start out differently each time you start a game. So all of these things force you to adapt your strategy based on which HQ type (they all use different resources to upgrade/support life). There are also 3 different biomes in the game so far: mars, ceres, and Io. Each one has different resources and terrain. For example: water is plentiful on Ceres, but virtually nonexistent on Io. Since it's one of the main life support resources, it leads to vastly different playstyles
>>
>>385880978
I honestly can vouch for this.

Friends and I got into it since we liked space engineers, the exploration gets cranked way up for this game. It gets updated nearly every day too. I haven't played in a month or two now, but if you love autistic space building check it out I guess.

Interplanetary is like DEFCON only empirically better. Everyone plays as their own planet in a solar system. You build up infrastructure on your planet- research new tech- drain you planet of all its natural resources. Then you fire salvos of rail cannon and other fun stuff at your enemies - but the fun part is that you have to aim the guns manually and do some mental guesswork about how gravity of nearby planets will influence your shot, or slingshot projectiles around planets to increase their impact - super fun with friends (sadly the online community is nonexistent).

Naming some hidden gems with a quick blurb

NEO Scavenger - apocalyptic survival open world done very fucking right
Thumper - Audiosurf spends a night on shrooms watching David Lynch movies
Door Kickers - Tacticool operators kill turrurists in top-down planning game
Duskers - Drive drones around derelict spaceships and try to figure out why everyone is fucking dead and everything is trying to kill you
HELLDIVERS - twin stick shooter with amazingly fun coop in which you spread DEMOCRACY to filthy aliens
My Summer Car - to be fair this was FOTM back when it came out but if you weren't in those threads you didn't hear about it most likely
Enjoy a Finnish summer of getting drunk, building your own car from scratch, piece by piece, saunas, drunks, loud shitty music, swearing, and pissing
TIS-100 and SHENZHEN I/O - autistically code things to solve puzzles and feel like either a massive nerd or a complete moron
theHunter: Call of the Wild - walk around an amazingly beautiful wilderness and hunt, honestly I'm not even into hunting and I love this game because of how comfy and beautiful it is

It's true though. 8th gen games are either AAA games with $100 million put into marketing, or Early Access indie games on a shoestring budget. The mid-budget market, the normal source for "hidden gems", is gone. Just look at how quickly licensed games have disappeared.

>>385880645
In the age of the internet and social media, games get far more coverage. It's less likley for a good game to not really be forgotten or given no coverage. As such, relatively obscure games aren't gonna have the same level of such as they did in, say, the PS2 era.

Do you know what the word "hidden" means?
>>
I'd say that Titanfall 2 is the biggest hidden gem on this gen machines, if compared to when it came out and how it succeeded. Pretty cheap now too.
But to actually hidden gems for current gen I'd say World of Final Fantasy if you need some comfy JRPG with a fan service overdose. Was maybe mentioned once in E3 and no one noticed it then, or after it. Just my opinion of course.
Other one is Digimon games that have started to appear, more Japanese stuff.
West has Tearaway, Plantsvs. Zombies GW2, Mad Max, Mother Russia Bleeds,
Another one is basically anything by Vanillaware.

Dwelling to older games, some OG xbox games come to mind such as Bloodrayne, Urban Chaos, Shellshock '67, Armed and Dangerous, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death, Yager, Brute Force. Some of those are multiplats
On PS2 there are The Punisher, The Red Star, Second Sight, Digimon Rumble Arena 2, Knights of the Temple, Star Wars Episode 3.

Not sure how hidden unity of command is, but I found it fun- managed to get ~40 hours out of the campaign. plays like a classic tabletop war game only much prettier and streamlined. It's more of a puzzle game than anything else- with seeing how quickly you can blitz into enemy territory to cut their fuel, how long you can hold off an attack without supply lines, what approaches are optimal. you can take it slow and miss out on requisition for much needed units later on in the campaign, or play it risky. Really entertaining.

CrossCode is a hidden gem considering its lack of presence on /v/ and it's also quite modern.

I can even vouch that, taken as a standalone experience not even being finished yet, it is already worth its asking price, which is something you can't say about most early access trash.

Last gen gave us Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity for our pals in the PAL regions). The story was largely incomprehensible nonsense, the soundtrack was eh, and it had a really weird difficulty curve. It was also the best John Woo game ever made, and soaked in style, with a hilariously fun weapon upgrade system. Here's a sample of the combat system.

Might as well add my own to this.

Infra (PC) - Fun puzzle adventure game in the source engine, setting is a city with horrible infrastructure problems and you going around solving the mystery of it while not trying to die in a tunnel collapse or power plant explosion. No combat though.

In Virbis Virtus (PC) - Puzzle adventure game where you're a mage. The game requires a mic to cast spells by speaking the spell lines.

Tumbleseed (Switch) - If you ever played that Taito arcade game "Ice cold beer" It's like that. Control a bar from each end independently to roll a ball up a hill while avoiding holes and enemies. Has roguelike elements.

Sorcery! series (PC) - Basically a choose your own adventure book with a unique artstyle and slightly more gameplay than a book. You play the hero going to reclaim the crown that allows whoever wears it to rule. Choose your direction, what to say to people, how to spend your money, and how to cast spells at just about any time. There are 4 parts, but the first 2 are the same game.

Other then that...
If you are playing knight get 1 point in DEF early and actually use the block ability.
Wizard you just need a good ranged spell to spam
Berserker just spam jump

Sunless Sea for a heavily story and narrative-driven trading game.

Domina for Sega Genesis style Gladiator Trainer simulator.

Project Zomboid for Dreamcast style perfection in the 'Zombie Survival' Genre. Been developed for over 6 years.

Prison Architect: The game Rimworld stole all their graphics from.
>>
>>385895303
None of those are hidden gems. Everyone on /v/ knows about PZ and PA. SS is talked about a lot, and Domina is unironically to SJW-y for me to like even though the gameplay is sublime

Games that have tens of thousands of copies and are far from main stream. I am glad you know about them though, my pedantic and arrogant friend.

Protip: If you can't get over the post-modern twists of Domina's bare-bones as fuck 'plot' and overcome the patriarchy with the best ending then I'm sorry, there's no hope for you. (((they))) have gotten to you and now everything in your life is political.

I didn't get the best ending the first time, but the second time around I just bought slaves with extra money, trained their AI to 100, gave them basic starting gear, then released them. I also edited the sprites so my Domina was a qt 3.14 lizard girl. It would've been a better game if it was just an endless gladiator simulator instead of "men are stupid dumb pigs unlike me who is doing exactly everything they are doing haha"
Plus I can't even hire a bunch of sexy young man slaves to have bacchanalian orgies with. What bullshit is this?

Breakdown for the original Xbox. First person game where the hand to hand combat felt like it had weight to it and a realism that hasn't been seen in a game sense.

It was a pretty generic scenery though but the story and first person combat in the game was so god damn satisfying.

Yeah the amount of management you have to do to keep track of all the reactor cores and the power management and killing enough mutants in all the station so you not getting attacked all the time. Man i got like 40 hours in the game and i did not felt like i made much progression.
It was just such a nice concept but i think it would be better maybe in a 4 player coop or something. Also the mathematics you need to do in the end when you craft stuff is annoying. You quickly realize that you will run out of the basic resources in no time when you reach TECH 2 and the only way to get them effizient is by looting stuff and recycle. But your inventory is so small that it will get into a grind fest very fast. Always stuffing all the shit into your backpack and the monorail and head back to your base to load off and then you realize you wasted time and food on 40 metal that just evaporates when you build a new reactor core.

Hell i even got stressed while writing it.

It's RNG about which dungeons are available for you to pick, which trinket reward you'll get, and the combination of monsters you'll get. That I can deal with but once I surprised a group of enemies on the cove and they got two consecutive turns while focusing in one single character, which of course died, that shit broke the straw for me.

Don't diminish the game's failures, this fanbase is getting as cancerous as the soulsfags.

here's a list of games that get overlooked most of the time.

war in the north - fantastic online and couch coop. system linked the shit out of this game with a friend.
both lara croft games, temple of osiris and guardian of light - same as above. great coop games.
asscreed chronicles china - an asscreed where you actually need to stealth and some sections are challenging. fighting against more than one enemy mostly ends up in you dying.
sunset overdrive - fluid movement, nice animations and fun boss fights. solid 20-40 hours of fun.

RNG may or may not be just as bad, but you get the added bonus of going autistic with equipment, perks and skills which only makes the pain greater when they eventually die.
>>
>>385915868
Oh, I forgot to mention, even though the RNG can be just as bad, you at least have the option to run away from encounters, although that might still injure your squad.

this game is shit compared to Boktai. Damn I'm still mad that nips got the 3rd game but not us
>>
>>385912851
How come people have consistently beaten the game? The game's failures weren't in RNG. The failure was in the grinding, and they've fixed that.

>Liked Unchanged with in Closed Alpha
>The part grinding was annoying, but you could get used towards it, and it let you focus on what you wanted to unlock directly
>Now resources are gone, you just get skulls and random trap tokens you eventually use to upgrade traps once you eventually get enough of them
>If you don't get a chest, you're getting shit all as rewards.
>They scrapped the first PVP for a crappier PVP that's pure RNG spamming skills to get the skills you want to eventually unlock on rotation for good.
Like holy shit unchained got bad fast. it's a really major shame too.

This. Cloudbuilt, Tinertia, Redout and Nex Machina all great games but because they're indie without a big publisher nobody will believe me.

>>385910791
>only good games get attention
What is marketing. A big company can make a bad game and it will get attention regardless and once it gets enough attention it is automatically deemed better than a game with less attention by the masses.
>>
>>385916338
Cloudbuilt is being ported to PS4 and Xbox soon.
>>
Like you're all just mostly posting old games that werent big enough to become mainstream. And then call them "hidden gems".

>>385916419
I know. But the original has been on PC for what 1 year? Or more? And I dont believe that it will be widely known. Same with Reddout (devs told they're working on console version). But who is really gonna give a shit for Reddout when Wipeout is their childhood lovechild?

>hidden gems
this is the hiddenest of gems i know of, its a god tier zombie game when i first played it, but now it seems a little too easy and less scarey.

anyone got any tips on how to make movement in webms less blurry/pixelated?

Super Cloudbuilt is already out on PC, dunno about consoles.
Go fucking play it you lazy fucks, the game is amazing, fixed problems like controlls and lack of the content from the original, while adding new story mode (with pisspoor voice acting tho), challenge mode, new levels and new mechanics. Original didn't really click with controllers in my opinion, not sure about this one, don't even wanna try. Music is great, artstyle can be bothersome, but can be changed in options.
There, that game was second best game of 2014. It wont be this year, since this year is gucking insane, but it is really fucking good.

increase bit rate to like 1000
or lower resolution so that the artifacts and low bitrate become harder to see because it's so small
>>
This one. It's one of my favorites.

overlooked cause it released at the same time as second sight. really fun game tho.. IN MY MINDDDDDD IN MY MIIIIIIAAAAHHAAIINDDDD[/SPOILER]

(back when games had nu-metal music video tie-ins)

starts off good but by fuck the last few hours is the biggest load of shit in videogames. just copy/paste the exact same enemy spam and shitty platforming sections about 10 times.

I knew it was my sort of thing when I first saw it; I remember thinking it looked kinda like Dustforce in 3D.

>RNG
The heirloom grinding is the real problem, the RNG can always be dealt with if you know how to handle yourself in combat
>>
>>385884343
Good taste my man!
See they're making a new ultima underworld?
I'm fairly skeptical but still hopeful that it'll be awesome.

Another game to add to the list, for coop is Necropolis

So this scenario never happened to you? I had literally my lvl 6 healer die in a level 5 dungeon in the first encounter. 90%+ light and I get surprised and I have only 3 guys left when my turn begins.

Gothic 2 notr is my favorite hidden gem. It feels like witcher 3 done correctly.

lvl 4 armor/wep and that +33% healscroll and +10%(?) hp vase thingy. The problem really is that crit is DOUBLE damage while in XCOM it was 1.5x multiplier. So 2 crits can easily deal 20+ damage each.

There are no more hidden gems because all of the hidden gems have already been revealed and blasted for the pleb of the community to pilfer and rape. Hidden gems are good for the few select who appreciate it and those who are eager enough in their search to find it to enjoy.

I remember the days of 2010 when finding people talking about Deus Ex 1 was rare, nobody knew what Vampire the Masquerade was, and CRPG/Dungeon Crawler team-based game threads were like diamonds in this place, now you find them almost every day.
