>GameStop’s stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day this year, the company told staff during a series of conference calls this morning, according to two people who were on those calls. It’s a change in policy that has upset some employees of the massive video game retail chain.

Why the fuck is this allowed?

In the US, a lot of stores have started Black Friday on thanksgiving evening to make more shekels
>>

Because retail shops only see profits on holidays, it's when people who don't work minimal wage get to do their shopping needs.

How many public holidays are there a year in America? Are they losing one of the few they get or is there still plenty?

I live in Australia and practically every month has a public holiday or two but if you work retail only two of them apply to you and that's only because there is a law that forbids all but certain establishments, e.g. gas stations, from being open on those days. If that law didn't exist you can be sure retail outlets would probably open on those days too.
>>
>>385807876
There's no reason gamestop should still be in business. Who the fuck goes there? Why even buy games in person?

didn't find newer info, but what shows is spike in thanksgiving sales around 2013 and gamestop wants on that spike.

Only one way to find out, isn't there?
>>
>>385809037
>How many public holidays are there a year in America?
Zero. Private businesses are allowed to be open 365 days a year.
>>
>>385809037
christmas and memorial day are like the only holidays here
>>
Does America have penalty rates for working holidays? Way back when I was working casually in highschool, I loved getting holiday shifts cause of double pay.
>>
>>385809192
gamestop has been on a downhill for the past years because their competition offers better shit

id trust that trend more than holiday sale surges
>>
>>385809250
That sucks hard.
>>
>>385809037
It depends entirely on your state and your job. I live in MA, which makes it illegal for stores to be open at all on certain Holidays. Other Holidays make it not illegal, but you're required to receive time and a half. Retail is usually an exception to some of these rules, and I work security, which is also an exception.
>>
>>385809384
Don't see how that is relevant to anything.
>>
>>385809078
Or better yet, learn a trade or take an apprenticeship to go into business for themselves and not feed the beast that is student loans. They are already gamestop employees past high school age, they don't need a gender studies degree on top of it.
>>
>>385809258
If you work retail you will probably be open Christmas and memorial day.

>>385809262
It's typically pay and a half, which is nice. I work nights at a dead store and I was basically just standing around doing nothing getting paid probably just barely 15 bucks an hour to be there.
>>
>>385809386
Some of us actually want to work and don't mind the free, extra money for working on a day that's really no different than the others. Not like people who work at 7-11 don't get days off
>>
>>385808925
Or ya know, people with a real job.
>>
Who /cybermonday/ here?
>>
>>385808376
I assume the problem lies more in "what the fuck can Gamestop offer which beats out other big box electronic stores."
>Black Friday/Actual Thanksgiving.
>Go to Wal-Mart
>Chokeslam a granny and run over Tyrone for a 60" tv model which has sat in the warehouse for at least two years.
>Go to Best Buy.
>Do the same, except you run over Pablo and Dr. Dhing for a 60" tv which has sat in the warehouse for only one year.
>Go to Gamestop.
>Get none of this, but you do get console bundles (for the same mark down as other stores) and mark downs on used games so they cost what they should considering they're used.
What money are they believeing they can steal from the competition in this situation?
>>
>>385809262
No, double pay/ 1.5x pay is a bonus if the corp wants to keep people from completely hating them. Its not actually compulsory for them to pay you any more on a holiday
>>
>>385809495
>for working on a day that's really no different than the others
Unless you plan on going on a vacation or something, you know, what normal people do, which goes really nice with paid vacations by law.
>>

What's really the point though? Thanksgiving is not a gift-giving holiday so there's no last minute video game shopping, I doubt there will be any major games released right on Thanksgiving. >People bitch even harder.
In retrospect, a vast majority of these individuals worked for the company because they had little to no options left. Whole lot of middle aged department managers working for 10 - 13 dollars an hour even though the cost of living in our area for only a single individual was about 12 dollars.

It really does bother me how people in America tend to view other Americans as lazy, despite us working a retarded amount of hours with less vacation and maternity leave than a lot of European nations.

Americans have a pretty fucked up notion when it comes to work ethic, people seem to be willing to sacrifice their rights just to not seem lazy, at least a lot of older people seem that way.
>>
>>385810049
If you're supposed to work and say no, or just don't show up, you get fired. That's not exclusive to retail, either, you know.

gamer identity types

i stopped going in there at all several years ago after they started selling "new" games without shrinkwrap and I got into an argument with the clerk over the definition of new... last game i bought there was metroid prime trilogy for wii.

i once bought a game in there and the guy forgot to get the game out of the cabinet and put it in the case. makes for an awkward conversation when he doesn't believe you didn't just take it out and go in to get another.
>>
>>385809932
Because people are off and rather than visit and spend time talking with family, they want to go shopping at the mall and drop off the little brats at the gamestore.
>>
>>385809410
I also live in MA and actually worked retail like 10 years ago. Yeah, stores might be open on holidays, but a lot of the time they'll close at noon, or early in the afternoon. Personally, I didn't mind that since it ensures a bit of extra pay and, at least in my family, holdiay stuff only really happens in the evening.

I went to a GameStop for the first time in years just a couple weeks ago. They had a good trade in deal with like an extra 60% if you traded in 6 games, so I dumped a bunch of old PS3 games I haven't touched in years, as well as my Vita since they were giving an extra $25 for that, and I ended up with like $400 in credit. I've since used that to buy a bunch of PSN cards and take advantage of sales without spending any real money.
>>
>>385810748

>>385810715
No, it's "new" in the sense of "this game has not been opened or played", except they let employees take games home to play them and then sell those games as new rather than used.
>>
>>385810748

I do work nights with a lady who works both as a manager at our store at night and then works for a delivery company during the day and she could probably drop one of the jobs but just doesn't. She owned a fairly nice car a while back and just went on vacation to Ireland for like two weeks so she sure as shit isn't having financial problems but she still goes to work at night and then 3 hours after ending her night shit she needs to be at her day job. Shit like that just seems completely insane to me.

>>385810972
Depends on who you are. If you have a manager who loves you, then they'll secretly let you off that day, if they see you as just a normal employee then you're fucked.

There were even cases of people getting their days approved months in advanced and the store manager went and deleted them due to forcing people to work Black Friday.
I once had to go to a Black Friday once with food poisoning, ask manager if there was any way I got call in. Was told that she would have my job if I missed and was forced on to a register for four hours.

Honestly the best part of is was the asshole customers who switched the tags on a ton of games, finding their stashes around the store, and getting full priced games for like $15-$25.

Well it is, atleast in EU. I worked in EBgames parttime a few years ago. We were allowed to unwrap up to 2 of the new games and we had to sell them as "Opened" with a discount. that one way is following the pattern. The pattern shows gamestop is floundering. People didn't even learn about gamestop's shit practices, it's just become irrelephant due to the absolutely laughable price structure. $55 for a preowned game? I can go on craigslist and get it for $40 with no tax, and probably in better condition than whatever booger-eater sold it to gamestop for $3. Amazon offers better prices and GUARANTEED WORKING COPIES instead of that "oh it's a DISPLAY copy, it's still new even though we played it and it's been removed from the packaging and all of the registration pamphlets are used/missing and there's no manual and the disc is scratched".

That's how all places should be, but it's easier to maximize profits when you don't really help your employees at all.

Yes, it is, especially in IT. Is it really more expensive to give one or two guys double pay for the day than have a whole room of chinks work for you and 10 other companies at the same time? Aren't those companies even afraid of shit like security leaks? Those gook ITs work by day and sell datamined shit by night on silkroad.

I don't know but my state (Indiana) is pretty shit. At-will employment (look it up if you don't know what that is), minimum wage is at federal level ($7.25 per hour or $2.13 for tipped employees like waiters) and no higher, no guaranteed holidays or holiday pay, and probably other stuff that I'm forgetting. Basically everything is at the federally mandated minimum levels and no better.

I'd just like to clear something up here if you don't mind. After reading the thread I'm seeing a handful of posts about how gamestop shouldn't have any business on thanksgiving.

I'm not even going to detail the whole "Black Friday starts on Monday this year" problem even though it triggers me to no end. I work at a Burger King that's open during every holiday. Thanksgiving day was one of our busiest days, and Christmas was up there as well. You would not believe the number of people out there that have family issues so deep rooted that they can't even celebrate a holiday together. Just because you laugh and eat and have a a good time with your family does not mean everyone else does. Gamestop probably would get pretty busy on Thanksgiving simply because people are trying to get out of the house.
So no, these gamestop employee's are not being called in to an easy day at work, they're looking at a long and busy day, and they don't even get holiday pay.

This planet and it's people are a joke.

the only good part about working there was checking out games for free and the hilarity that ensued from midnight launches.

working the WOTLK launch we kept the 300+ bottles of axe chocolate spray and body gel and would do things like tape the top down and lob it into the bathroom.

Did you miss the part where I said thanksgiving was our busiest day?
We are BUSIER on these holidays than on normal days.
Unless you're implying that the people that don't celebrate these holidays all have a need to get fast food on these holidays for some reason, then the only reasonable explanation is that people are intentionally trying to get away from their houses and not eating with their families. Why else would armies worth of people come in around dinner time ordering food for themselves and maybe their kid.

i switched every key around on the keyboards and used about 300 rubber bands to secure the shitty scan gun that our manager wouldnt put in a fucking order to fix.

another time we hung a chunk of a wendy's burger from the ceiling using those s clips for promo signs

one day the store manager asked if i felt like being there, said nope. he said him neither, so we turned off the lights, pulled out psps and sat behind the counter playing games.

customer walked in and asked if we were open. his response was "no this is edge card member only hours, if you dont have one sorry come back in an hour"

Tried working for walmart one summer in college a few years ago. There would regularly be more than 8 hours difference between the start of my shift from one day to the next. Depends on your position and if your shift starts early. If you're doing something like cleaning or pushing carts they just have you start as soon as you get there because those positions are probably understaffed.

If you get there early (or at whenever the managers arrive) and are in a department where they don't need you working literally every moment your at the store then YES. You do have to do the store cheer, out in the middle of the store. It's fucking humiliating.

Seriously though don't work at walmart unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY need the money. They pay well for a place that will hire virtually anybody for completely unskilled labor but it's fucking terrible work.

If this is true, I'm surprised it took GameStop this long to do Thanksgiving openings since other major retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target have been doing it for a few years. I don't know how beneficial it'll be with them being a speciality store but GameStop has been struggle for sales for awhile to my knowledge. They're probably desperate.

>>385809037
It depends in your line of work and any specific state laws. If you're in customer service/retail, you're lucky to get reduced hours on holidays including major ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Fast food and emergency services are pretty much 24/7 365 with emergency services being open for obvious reasons.

However, if you work for the state or federal government or if your company follows bank holidays, you may get 7-8 paid holidays off throughout the year. But some companies are now looking for ways around that.

Maybe if people spend less time bitching about work and more time working, they wouldn't have such a hard time. Assuming you get extra pay, of course. Fuck working for a slave driver, be more assertive about your damn future.

Politics is more than just left and right, it's also "up and down".

Depending on what your stance is on social issues, you're left-wing or right-wing.
Depending on what your stance is on how much control the government should have, you're authoritarian or libertarian.

For example, if you think the government should have some control but not too much, and you're opposed to gay marriage, you would be where that red X is on the chart.

If you believe the government doesn't have enough power over corporations and criminals, your red X would be higher. If you believe that the government has too much power, your red X would be lower.
>>385818998
You're confusing right-wing libertarianism with right-wing authoritarianism.

See >>385819781. You're confusing the libertarian right-wing that is in power right now with all ideologies on the right hand side of the compass.

The libertarian right-wing will not protect the worker, because it believes that's not the government's domain to interfere.
The truly populist, democratic right-wing will protect the worker, because it believes that's the government's domain.

Right now the ruling right-wing in most Western countries is representing the interests of the wealthy 1% of right wing, rather than the 99% of the right wing. They are more libertarian than anything.

The original labour unions were right-wing by today's social standards. Back when people had 12-hour working days and 6-day working weeks with shitty pay.

>gone on vacation
>flown in a commercial airliner

Which in my case, was almost our whole department for 2 years in a row because we were so understaffed and the corporate jews wouldn't let us hire anyone else because they didn't want to pay anyone.

2. You still get paid if you don't work. I can live without the extra $50 if it means I get to spend extra time with my family.

3. It's time and a half for most jobs, I doubt FUCKING GAMESTOP would pay double time. In any case, probably not worth it.

>What chain did you work for?

Regal Cinemas for the first 7-8 years on the west coast, then I moved home to the east coast and work for a regional chain called Southern Theatres. Southern was waaaaay better to their employees than Regal was, and to be fair, I would have stayed on there and taking a GM position eventually if I could have dealt with all the crap that came with it.

>We get paid like shit (not to mention minimum wage has gone up $2 in the past ~1.5 years and we haven't had a single cost of living increase) to do way, way too much.

Wow, sounds like you're working for Regal, too. I remember when the minimum wage was raised so high in our area that the difference in pay between a floor employee and an assistant manager was less than a dollar. No matter how much we complained to our GM and DM, the only answer we ever got was "your area doesn't do enough business and if you don't like that, move to a busier town." Regal REALLY doesn't give a fuck about you until you become a GM, and even then, I get the feeling you're made to feel replaceable.

Provided they stay that way. Southern Theatres was aggressively expanding and even acquired Movie Tavern just before I left, putting it either 9th or 10th in total exhibition size in the US. I wouldn't doubt it if Regal or AMC decides to try to buy out Southern within the next five-ten years.

There isn't a mainstream authoritarian right-wing party in the United States to vote for.
You've got the Libertarian Party or the Republican Party which both represent the interests of the rich looking for less regulation.
40 years' worth of constant Jewish media negative publicity regarding the populist right-wing in America has neutered any political pushes. Even when the alt right managed to get Trump elected, he was still restricted by the strictures of the libertarian-leaning Republican Party.

I had to work Thanksgiving night at Best Buy last year. It's so stupid because I can't drink my ass off during Thanksgiving dinner (well, lunch for me). And yeah, there were a lot of shoppers that night. I need to get out of this retail shit before the holidays this year.

I didn't say that at all. I just said that workers' rights should be protected (federal limitations on working hours and pay) and consumers' rights should be protected (don't put bleach in baby formula and shit like that).

Outside of that I'm not interested in super-socialist policies taxing the wealthy for money to build liberal arts centers. Authoritarian-right policies are not aimed at taking rich people's money to pay for other people's stuff, they are aimed at making sure powerful super-rich people don't shit all over everyone else.

Not great for morale when you're already being hounded for not getting 50+ preorders of Madden or shit like 25 to Life.

> their constant push for sales really rubs me the wrong way

Get to know a few of the more chill employees and only go in when their working. My store manager was a raging coke fiend who would drop an eight ball into a tall boy can of Monster and shotgun it right before his shift. He claimed it help him sell better. All it really did was piss off our regulars as he literally bounced in place behind the counter while triple and quadruple selling these poor bastards on magazine subscriptions and game warranties they didn't want. I used to watch people walk in the door, see him, and promptly leave. They'd either wait to come back the next day or go to our sister store across town.

When I worked there, it was any game, new or used, that we had at least three copies of in stock. They've probably amended the policy by now, though.

Either way, never buy new from GameStop. Aside from bullshit pre-order bonuses, they offer no incentive to do so whatsoever, outside of the rare occasion when they run a decent sale.

Again, the fully libertarian right or half-libertarian right are the only options for the right-wing voter, because 40 years' worth of propaganda portraying right wing populism as Nazism and thus eeeeevil have kept down a right-wing populist candidate, in addition to the two-party system.

We literally saw a populist right wing candidate come to power this very election. But because of the limitations of the two-party system, he had to go with the mainstream Republicans.

Your right wing voter going to the voting booth has a choice: Vote for half-libertarian Republicans, or throw your vote away on a third party candidate and let the lefties win on social matters. There is NO viable right-wing populist option thanks to leftie propaganda and the two party system.

>Votes steer the politicians
In a two party system there is no room for a 4-directional voter base. You can't steer something up when it only lets you steer left or right.
Libertarian candidates have the advertising money. This forces right-wing populist candidates to merge with them to have a chance as a political party against the similarly solidified left. It has nothing to do with the voters because ALL voters CAN be manipulated.

It's endemic; on both sides of the political spectrum in America, both Left and Right, the mainstream political parties represent the interests of the rich.

Honestly I wouldn't expect anything less out of Gamestop. Radioshack did the same shit right before their bankruptcy in a last ditch move to get sales up. See:

https://www.sbnation.com/2014/11/26/7281129/radioshack-eulogy-stories

>6:00 a.m. We all line up in expectation of hordes of customers. Six on one side of the store, six on the other side, pallbearers of an invisible casket. The manager opens the doors. No one is waiting on the other end.

>7:00 a.m. Nobody has walked into the store. Nobody has been seen even walking past the store. This infuriates the manager, who at this juncture elects to fire one employee, right there on the spot, because her sweater is a shade of red that is inconsistent with the dress code.

>8:00 a.m. Someone almost walks in. She kind of turns toward the store, sees 11 of us just standing and staring at her, and turns a 180. Don't blame you, ma'am.

Gamestop is dead, most of their inventory is funko pops and old controllers now. Why would anyone want to shop there? Even parents buying shit for their kids will just go to Walmart, while anyone with a brain will just buy things online. They're basically a shitty toy store for hipsters now, which isn't sustainable in the long term.

That's what happens when you work at a failing store. Management stops giving a shit and they make ridiculous demands knowing it'll piss everyone off. Because that's the goal, to get as many people quitting so they can stop paying them and thus stop losing money through wages. It's shitty, but that's how all businesses act when they're on their deathbed. Investors stop playing around and demand everyone who isn't making net profit be fired, with backend operations downsized accordingly (leading to a massive hassle just to get a final paycheck). I went through the same thing when I worked at Kmart last year.

they'd rather give jobs to 3rd world peasants than let people in their own country have a half decent wage at a shit job and then people wonder why escapism into vidya, anime etc is so prolific.

Used games are more harmful than piracy since it represents a lost sale, you have money and are willing to spend money but you buy used instead of new. It's why Microsoft and EA were so autistic about killing used games.
>>

Depends on the gamestop I guess. find in the ones around me that the front right quarter of the store is that sort of shit, with it cutting out about halfway to the back and at the door.

People are always saying how Australia is so great, and their school system is great, and standard of living is great, and all that

Yet every time I hear about some retarded ass degenerate shit like some 11 year old and her 9 year old boyfriend having a baby, making her 23 year old mother the youngest grandmother in the country, it's ALWAYS Australia.

What gives? Is Australia good or just a shithole with backwards culture?

>when retail stores have basically turned Thanksgiving into an extension of black friday
They only did this as a desperate move to save themselves. Nobody shops on Thanksgiving, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a net loss. No type of business can outstupid retail.
>>
>>385829554
>the majority of jobs are retail
Top fucking kek. No, nobody has to do it. It's a job for robots.
>>
>>385830736
I wouldn't mind labor if such jobs existed nearby. The closest thing is farm work, but they only hire people in their family or close friends.
>>
>>385830605
No they don't. The reason that you threaten to quit over working holidays is because the value of retail labor is worth nothing and you'll be replaced by somebody who is willing to work the holiday. When your labor is valuable enough to bargain to not work holidays then you will get the hours you want.
>>
>>385807876

>Sorry we still don't have any switches

>BUT YOU CAN PRE-ORDER ONE IN AN INSTORE SPECIAL BUNDLE THAT WILL ARRIVE AT THE END OF THE MONTH
>>
>>385830957
most labour jobs don't put flies up, you want to do labourers job, you are expected ask if they need men to hire.
>>
>>385828259
The problem with that is that pre-owned is no longer necessarily good enough. If you're that much of a gamer and live remotely near a Best Buy you could just get GCU and pay 48 bucks for a new game instead of 60, and it will actually fucking be new. Same with Prime, if you preorder it'll be 20% off and a lot of people own Prime for general utility anyway.

If you wait, digital usually beats preowned at Gamestop too, as the digital margin is much better without that pesky retailer margin and thus those savings can be passed onto the end user, which means that unless you're autistic about only owning physical you probably want a digital copy of an older game so it's cheaper.

America is dying and Trump has done fuck all to fix it. I'm not sure it can be fixed honestly.

It's pretty easy to spot, Sears/Kmart itself is selling everything of value they have to another business of their owner while the stores themselves get fucked. Employees see it happening, morale goes into the toilet and anyone with talent walks off leading to conditions inside middling stores deteriorating into closure conditions. Once it begins, it can't be stopped as even people at flagship stores will start to get worried and look elsewhere.

In the end, there's nothing left but an empty box that is torn down and made into apartments when the lease is up.

The left/right dichotomy is based on economic policy you low-IQ monkey. Social issues fall under authoritarian/libertarian. Fascists would be centrist or left-leaning.

you have a shitty company then. I got paid holidays at my old company and if I had to work on a paid holiday, it was double pay, thus it was like working 24 hours when I only put in 8. I actually wanted to work holidays.

Serious response: Trump is already reviewing whether or not chinese steel should be banned entirely (a power the president and US trade representative have if it's for "national security") meanwhile the TPP (which would have outsourced most remaining tech jobs) is dead while concerns over hacking cool corporate desires to do business with third world companies. And the wall is being built.

It's slow but it's happening. If it doesn't happen under Trump it will happen through someone more extremist than Trump at a later date.

I can't even be upset at GameStop for this. It's shopper's fault stores keep pushing their Black Friday sales into Thanksgiving day, because they keep going out to save $5 on a tv. Only way to stop it is to get people to stop shopping on these days, but that isn't happening
>last year my mom told everyone to go home early from Thanksgiving dinner an hour after we all got there so she could go get a $10 coupon from JCPenneys

Most people do everything online now, no reason to walk into stores and look for last year's inventory that is cheaper on Amazon anyway. Best Buy encapsulates this problem perfectly: their stores have slowly become more and more empty as managers realize they have no reason to have piles of unsold DVDs and computer parts sitting out, since most people buy all of that online anyway because it is so much cheaper. Which is why most BBs are glorified cell phone stores with a laptop and TV section now.

I agree with you, I prefer to do everything online, but some people have made Black Friday a "family tradition". Plus some stores will only give you certain deals and coupons if you're there in person.
>>
>>385831543
LOL bullshit.
>>
>>385832258

yeah but that's not even 1% of the customer base and even if they spend all their money all they are doing is buying unsold inventory below cost since that's the whole point of black friday: getting rid of all the remaining inventory

I work in the medical field so I never have Christmas or Thanksgiving off. I don't see why a retail store needs to be open though. Who the fuck wants to buy shit on Thanksgiving day, keep the sales off until the next morning so people can have their holiday off.
