I live in Australia and practically every month has a public holiday or two but if you work retail only two of them apply to you and that's only because there is a law that forbids all but certain establishments, e.g. gas stations, from being open on those days. There were even cases of people getting their days approved months in advanced and the store manager went and deleted them due to forcing people to work Black Friday.

Honestly the best part of is was the asshole customers who switched the tags on a ton of games, finding their stashes around the store, and getting full priced games for like $15-$25.

Last year at Harley Davidson, we had off 7 days for thanksgiving. Day before thanksgiving, thanksgiving, black Friday, weekend and first two days of buck season. Unions are great. All paid too as long as you weren't one of the casual workers who they refuse to even pay holidays for.

I'd just like to clear something up here if you don't mind. After reading the thread I'm seeing a handful of posts about how gamestop shouldn't have any business on thanksgiving.

I'm not even going to detail the whole "Black Friday starts on Monday this year" problem even though it triggers me to no end. I work at a Burger King that's open during every holiday. Thanksgiving day was one of our busiest days, and Christmas was up there as well. You would not believe the number of people out there that have family issues so deep rooted that they can't even celebrate a holiday together. Just because you laugh and eat and have a a good time with your family does not mean everyone else does. Gamestop probably would get pretty busy on Thanksgiving simply because people are trying to get out of the house.
So no, these gamestop employee's are not being called in to an easy day at work, they're looking at a long and busy day, and they don't even get holiday pay.

1. My job let people do this, but no one ever did because who wants to fucking work on Thanksgiving? They end up giving the shifts to the newest employees. Which in my case, was almost our whole department for 2 years in a row because we were so understaffed and the corporate jews wouldn't let us hire anyone else because they didn't want to pay anyone.

2. You still get paid if you don't work. I can live without the extra $50 if it means I get to spend extra time with my family.

In Australia it's double time, but penalty rates stack, so if it's a Public holiday on a Sunday, you're getting time and half for Sunday then double that amount for a Public Holiday.

I finally decided to take my lazy ass back to school and get a degree in network technology. Granted, it's only an associate's degree, but it got me in the door to the place I work now making almost $10k more a year than I did as a theatre manager.

Regal Cinemas for the first 7-8 years on the west coast, then I moved home to the east coast and work for a regional chain called Southern Theatres. Southern was waaaaay better to their employees than Regal was, and to be fair, I would have stayed on there and taking a GM position eventually if I could have dealt with all the crap that came with it.

Wow, sounds like you're working for Regal, too. I remember when the minimum wage was raised so high in our area that the difference in pay between a floor employee and an assistant manager was less than a dollar. No matter how much we complained to our GM and DM, the only answer we ever got was "your area doesn't do enough business and if you don't like that, move to a busier town." Regal REALLY doesn't give a fuck about you until you become a GM, and even then, I get the feeling you're made to feel replaceable.

Provided they stay that way. Southern Theatres was aggressively expanding and even acquired Movie Tavern just before I left, putting it either 9th or 10th in total exhibition size in the US. I wouldn't doubt it if Regal or AMC decides to try to buy out Southern within the next five-ten years.
