There wasn't an invasion of any kind, the /gw2g/ discord here https://discord.gg/greCqvQ wasn't set up til after most people cleared out of the general or migrated, nor was everyone part of the 4chan guilds. The guilds themselves barely brought up /gw2g/, let alone /mmog/, there's still people who come and ask about the botspam.

/mmog/'s gw2 posters were a mix of people who were trying to talk about the game, even the namefags were on-topic, but there was also a mix of shitposting from /mmog/ and /gw2g/ trying to stir shit and get the game removed as a discussion topic, and unfortunately anons took the bait, so naturally threads were more derailed than usual. There was still quite a bit of good game discussion despite the arguing.

The reason the bot came is because he either saw gw2 in the OP's body or because the exact thread that got botspammed (not counting the one that was likely picked up automatically) had a gw2-related picture, because /mmog/ had gw2 in the body for weeks prior That could be one way stealth gw2 threads have been found too, people have made OPs like "ncsoft general" with some gw2 image, but it took hours before it was picked up, and if it was remade it would be spammed automatically. That's my take, since I was around for the start of it on /gw2g/ up to /mmog/'s end.

I've been playing a lot of FFXIV lately, but one thing that I think is kinda lame is the only real reason to go out into the world is for hunts and gathering (and Gil is practically useless). There's jack shit to actually explore, nothing really hidden away. All I really have left to do now is log in and raid, level alts, and queue for an expert dungeon or trial.
I feel like being forced to actually be out in the world is pretty much the only strength GW2 has nowadays, so as much as I hate to say it I'll probably pick this up because exploration is my favorite aspect in MMOs. Legion had a lot of cool shit hidden away, so I'll give props to Blizzard for that though.

Someone has to chronicle this train wreck anyways.

What's endgame like in this game? Just hit 80 on my ranger and have been exploring the HoT zones for a few mastery levels. Anything I should do/work towards before the new expansion?

Also I wish FFXIV could implement half of the things anet has for open world content. That and the way servers are set up in gw2 is insanely superior to FFXIV's system. Other than those though I've liked FFXIV more so far

From what I remember dungeons were pretty dead after they were gutted. If you're talking about pve meaning "zerkers only" then that was fixed with raids. Mix of damage (zerkers) and condi is good. As well as having a high toughness player that the boss targets as well as a person in gear with healing power.

Raids in this game were a lot more fun than I was expecting them to be.

Just finished the last 3 living story episodes in a row. That fight against Balthazar's hounds with the Elder Dragon overlooking was really fun but overall the story was pretty shit. If the next expac wasn't in Elona I'd skip it. Probably won't get it at release regardless.

I don't think I'm gonna bother, I doubt the game changed that much and heart of thorns was one disappointment after another. I would also probably feel lost trying to get back into things after all this time (I quit before the first raid was opened)

I hated the generic currency because it was supposed to make you able to grind anywhere, but in reality it just made you grind the highest possible event and those were perma farmed by hundreds of people while the world was empty. I hated world events, they were all brain dead, and the loot was amazingly disposable and insignificant. And I hated how every new content update was temporary and lasted like 2 weeks, you like this event? heh too bad is never coming back, skip the game for a year and it will be the same turd as when you bought the game.... not to mention every patch was barely tested and always had exploits that made a few people mega rich.

Also is the old expansion going to be free once they release the new expansion?

Somewhat. Some healing builds use Monk Runes for example. Otherwise grind them for cosmetic skins.

WvW changed for pure leveling. I don't remember if you outright get experience anymore, but you do get currencies that can help you buy Tomes of Knowledge or something that levels up your toon in PvE.

The first personal story, not at all but a (maybe) fun experience to help you level a little. Or at least an insight as to why people hate the game's writing. It's good up until around level 50 or 60.

google metabattle for builds.

Exotic crafting is your friend. Berserker stats are still good, but outclassed by a lot of builds for a few of them.

PvP/WvW is also a good way to get easy gear quickly.

If you bought HoT then you get a free 80 with full exotic gear (soldiers stats only I think).

Don't get me wrong, I don't think GW2 is anything beyond decent at best, but a lot of that rant is about story, when story is often one of the least important aspects of an MMO (at least to me). Individual questlines and zone stories can be interesting but from what I've heard The Secret World was the only MMO to really get story right. Playing through GW2 again, I just don't see anything to justify the sheer venom people spit at the game.

Well, it is a bit of a holdover from it's launch. Level 30 is when players can unlock their first elite skill on the old character progression system. So it was a bit all over.

New character progression/training once you hit 80 you can have all specs except the elite without having to do a single hero challenge.
