What was the point? What benefits are gained from the change? At the absolute worst it annoys fans of the characters, at the absolute best (which is the average response) the casual fan doesn't even know that the change was made.

My girlfriend saw the Koopalings for the first time in Mario Kart 8 and just naturally assumed they were Bowser's kids. The change was stupid, unnecessarily, and only has a potential to confuse the casual audience.

Nobody canonically has sex in the Mario universe, all the babies are handed out by storks (see: Yoshi's Island)
This includes Bowser Jr. I think it goes that the storks saw Bowser and Peach together so much that they just assumed they were together and gave them Jr, but that's up in the air.
Miyamoto was asked who Jr.'s mom was and he said it was himself, so that goes to show what kind of answer you'll get out of Nintendo on this subject.

It's a great retcon considering only Larry really resembled bowser closely enough. Just needed the hair painted red to match up near perfectly. Wendy and roy along with morton could've easily been adopted children considering they have different scalp colors from Bowser, while the majority shared the same green. Still ridiculous that they were his kids eitherway.
