I thought this same. Didn't like the story/characters or music nearly as much as the first Nier either. I also thought Drakengard 3 had better waifus.

Everything is just slightly worse than Nier 1, but this one has more polish and presentation.

It's just a polished nier experience, it doesn't really stand on its own feet

I give it huge props for the soundtrack and all the genre mixing (which isn't new to Taro games anyway). The combat became dull in route A, then in route B, after hacking gets boring, you miss the combos you were able to do with the route A gameplay. So after that I enjoyed the gameplay more. Even then its pretty shallow compared to other platinum games. There's only a handful of bosses, but they're great, I just wish there were more. The story was whatever. I didn't care about the characters nearly as much as the first Nier cast. The NPC quests were the most interesting thing the story had going for it. Overall, good game thats worth playing, but not the 10/10 masterpiece some people make it out to be.

During one of Taro's drunken ramblings on twitter, he said "It's not easy to kill someone like Caim, you know, he's the kind of guy you think is dead for good and then just walks on screen like nothing happened."

They needed to make the game more than a hack n slash. I know nier 1 was trying to be that, and automata is taro's way to refining that gameplay style, but it doesn't work for something like Nier.
Also we needed more genres than SHMUP segments
