3 is the only essential.

2 is good. 4 is good (or bad depending on who you ask) The rest is either just decent or mediocre / skippable.

You can skip the first game. HoM&M 2 Gold is great, 3 is essential and series defining, 4 is terrible and best avoided.
The only good one in the soft reboot that took place from this point on is 5. Google Might & Magic: Heroes 5.5 or else you'll get frustrated with how long it takes for the AI to finish their turn.

The 3 is the best, also the five is quite good, like an hd version of the 3, the 1 and 2 are...good if you like really old games, 4 is like shrodinger told, good and bad as well, 6 is shit, 7 is bad, but could be worse

Even though it was slow as fuck, hotseat HOMM3 was one of my favorite chill games to play when hanging with friends.

I've been thinking of playing the campaigns of HoMM 2, then playing MM 6 and then finally move on to HoMM3.
Should I just skip to HoMM 3 instead?

I played 3, 4 and 5. None of them were bad but 3 is fucking godlike.

1 is garbage, but worth playing if you get it with the other entries in the series. So unbalanced in favor of Magic heroes that taking a drink every time they cast Armageddon will send you to the hospital faster than a turn 1 Sprite.

2 is an underrated gem, despite being built on the same engine as 1. Perhaps the best example of a perfect sequel. Despite having only hand-drawn sprites, it's aged like fine wine. Play it for free on Android.

3 is series-defining. Everyone played it, everyone loved it. If 2 is the Third Man, 3 is Citizen Kane. It's a classic for a reason, and is going to remain as playable in 2027 as it is in 2017. For me it's a toss up between this and 2 for the high water mark of the series.

4 kills a lot of sacred cows. People have mixed feelings on it, but it took risks and deserves credit for trying something new. It also was clearly rushed out towards the end of 3DO's life as a company, so it feels unfinished. Series fanatics should try it with an open mind.

5 is overrated. The 3D models have aged poorly, and the gameplay elements have none of the charm of the 3DO series. People on /v/ like it because they were 8 when it came out. Despite having Olivier Ledroit (Requiem Chevalier Vampire) do the concept art, the actual art design looks like an unholy blend of Warcraft III and rejected 4th Edition D&D.

I played the demo for 6, and it was essentially a shitty remake of 5.

7 was literally unplayable. I tried buying the game, but it took me three tries before I realized I was trying to force human feces into my DVD drive. Visually indistinguishable from a turd sandwich.

Don't buy the HD remake of 3. It's a trick.

2 to 5 are all good (4 is an odd one out but honestly, it's not bad, it's just very jank with growing pains).

Don't forget to play King's Bounty to see the origins of the series.

As different as 4 is, I have to say I enjoyed it - but the art direction is just terrible, I mean really.

Oh yeah, definitely. I just really liked making heroes their own units, not needing heroes to pick up shit, etc.

5 also didn't age that well, especially the 3d maps look ugly and way harder to read than the 2d ones (especially the underground I kept getting lost there). Not fixing the camera for the overworld was a huge fucking mistake.

The Campaigns in 4 are something else though.
I never thought it's possible to enjoy HoMM campaigns THIS much, they are just so fun. It's likeHoMM slipped into M&M territory
