Nintendo, that's basically it. Take away the brand recognition and the access to first party support and it wouldn't be nearly as popular, because Nintendo has been playing at a disadvantage since the age of the Wii ended.

The fact that you can play whatever you want, however you want, whenever you want and wherever you want.

>take away all the great games and it wouldn't be nearly as popular
Well, obviously.
>>
>>385724635
Nintendo focuses on the Asian market that most of these could not give less of a crap about.

Vita simply fucked up on far too many fronts in being a successor to PSP.
>>
It's okay when Nintendo does it. Because everyone else fucks it up.
>>
>>385724635
Nobody could ever compete with Nintendo. They have more franchises than other companies have games.
>>
Because it has good exclusives and is aimed at a broad audience.
That's all there is to it.

It just works. It lacks features that should be there but this honestly feels like a game console. I already have a PC, PS4 and Xbone so really I don't need another super duper polygon pusher. Shit I haven't even turned on my PS4 since getting my Switch. I've been too steeped in BoTW and Fast RMX is addicting and those have been holding me down for a month so far. Next up is Sonic Mania and Mario x Rabbids for me.

I'm surprised at the hype around it, and I was hyped for it

>>385724635
Nintendo makes excellent games to sell their hardware. It's also their best system design wise in a while.
>>
>>385724635
Its just whats popular at the moment. Even though the switch has long periods of time with nothing to play, people will still buy it just to say they have one.
>>
>>385725457
Fast RMX is criminally underrated. That game is a blast. You should give Blaster Master Zero a try too, it's another underappreciated gem.

>best system design
>has a ton of design flaws
im sure it was a great design by having the screen rub against hard unprotected plastic on a constant basis
>>
The timing was right and honestly most people who bought it probably thought this was Nintendo's first console since the Wii due to how bad the marketing for the Wii U was. It capitalizes on some novel concepts, people loved the social aspect of taking out with friends. I've been really surprised to see people out and about actually using it. I was at work and someone popped his out in the break room one day and the entire office crowded around to play. We've now done that every day on break since because it's just fun and since we can take it whoever where ever the hell we feel like it's consistently novel. It's also got arguably one of the best launch titles ever in BotW and people just clamored for the fucking thing.

>magical

There's the problem. There is this "magical" perception of Nintendo, rooted in faith, nostalgia and assumptions.

There are people who see Reggie/Iwata/Miyamoto as surrogate dads, so much so that they create fictional tales about how X employee contributed Y amount during Z's development when there is zero palpable evidence.

Marketing.

The gimmick is convenience instead of a nuisance this time.

WiiU ports are also fucking great since fucking no one owns a WiiU nor wants one.

I don't get this meme. Do you guys actually own a Switch? There's like a full 2 inch breathing room between the Switch and the dock enclosure. To scrape the screen against it you'd have to be sliding it at an angle and pulling up at an angle.

Many people who pull it up or slide it in quickly will eventually do so at an angle, and just once is enough to scratch the thing.

Being careful is good advice, but not when the primary reason for the gimmick in the first place is convienence.

>"wow, what a fucking design flaw."

When I got my Switch I was like "holy fuck lemmie be careful when putting this in" only to see that the Switch doesn't even come close to making contact with the walls of the dock when you slide it in.

Now the joycon straps? That's a fucking design flaw right there. I got this with Arms and wanted to at least give motion controls a shot before saying I dislike them (I do dislike them) so put the Joycon straps on. Oh, but guess what? I put them on the wrong way because apparently you're supposed to know to look for the little plus or minus engravings to ensure they're on the right way. This wouldn't have been a problem if they specifically designed it so that it can ONLY slide into place if you have it on the right way. But no, instead you can slide it just fine when putting it the wrong way but the locking mechanism gets jammed and you need to pry that shit off. I ended up breaking my Joycon lock AND the strap's white tab (following the "just pull the white tab, bro" advice everyone online says, only to find that pulling it literally just made it fly out of the damn thing) day 1. Sent in my Joycon to Nintendo, so they fixed it, but I'm not even going to bother messing with the Joycon straps anymore.
>>
>>385727062
One game I've already put quite a bit of time into. But only because I'm already a Splatoon fan. There's nothing else.

It's still just a tablet. Nintendo doesn't make consoles anymore.

There is. You're missing out.

isnt that what everybody wanted for nintendo to not make consoles anymore?

Arms and Fast RMX
>>
>>385726628
You don't have to be careful. Just plop it in and pull it out. There needs to be friction to cause a scratch, so you need to pretty much yank it out like a neanderthal to cause damage.
>>
>>385727529
Arms was a filler title while everyone waited for Splat 2.

Having games.

Nobody gives a shit about any of those other platforms because they had nothing to offer.

The Switch had Breath of the Wild, a game that broke records for having perfect reviews, and hailed by other developers as rewriting the book on the open world genre. Zelda's not quite the muscley tentpole that stuff like Mario games like a flagship 3D platformer or Mario Kart is in terms of sales, but a prestige project is not a bad thing to launch with.

Within Year 1, it will also have a new IP(Arms), Mario Kart, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Super Mario Odyssey.

In Year 2 they have already announced Yoshi, Kirby, Fire Emblem 16, and likely news on the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 and the next flagship Pokemon RPGs.

None of those platforms in their entire lifetime had a marquee library this good. Shit, most modern consoles would go three, four years before having a library that looked this good.

And that's before we even get into all the weird third party stuff coming in like Skyrim, Nights of Azure 2, WWE 2k18, Disgaea, Bomberman, etc.

Now on top of that is the Switch's central novelty, that it can play as a handheld and as a console, which makes it great as an indie/digital title platform.

Yea, I look at one every time I go to the bathroom.
>>
>>385727665
That's a pretty big clit.
>>
>>385727163
It's funny, I did exactly that and just pulled it off and it was fine. Got really scared that I fucked up and would have to take it to the store
>>
>>385727779
>Just pulled it off
You almost certainly damaged your Joycon lock while doing so. Maybe it isn't too apparent now, but you probably wore down the plastic or weakened it with this so it's more likely to completely break over time when pressure is naturally put on it or if your switch ever falls with the Joycon attached.
>>
>>385725167
BOTW is like going on a cruise vacation. It looks nice in pictures but there's not a whole lot happening when your actually there.
