Budokai 3 though... Budokai 3, I had some builds, sheesh. Concentraion was the item I NEEDED on everyone, so everyone got their own custom builds. Unflinching Kid Buu, Dr. Gero with Yakon, etc

What was the behind the scenes reason as to why Funimation never used the original DBZ soundtrack? They were able to use the original soundtrack for Dragon Ball just fine.

Likely dates back to when Saban was involved with the production, which is its own mess.

Saban liked to change the music in the shows they imported because they managed to finagle extra royalties due to audio. You'll note in the credits to the original Rock the Dragon dub, the composer is listed as Shuki Levy, but that's completely untrue. Ron Wasserman and Jeremy Sweet (the composers for Power Rangers) ghost wrote the music to the show, while Levy got the residuals.

As an aside, Kussa Mahehi was noted as being the vocalist for the intro, and that name is a known pseudonym for Haim Saban.

When Funimation broke ties, they had to pick up the pieces from there.

In this specific case, that's actually unclear. Ron Wasserman has gone on record as saying he and Sweet were the ones doing the music (and it's not in bad blood- both are still working in the industry), but I don't think either have brought up that they got Saban to do the vocals.

These were young guys in their early 20s or so, and many had already left Faulconer Productions by the time DBZ was getting wrapped up.

Plus, not gonna beat around the bush here, Funimation was a lot less competent back in the late 90s and early 00s.

Nathan Johnson, the composer for the Funimation redub of the early Saban episodes, as well as several the movies, is only a part-time musician. He's actually a fucking practicing lawyer. I'm not shitting you. Had no intention of scoring music to the show, but through happenstance, got a job doing DBZ of all things.

Don't even know what the music is like, only ever saw it subbed in the 90s. Dan Dan Kokoro alone just made it god tier and they had variations of it too, all of which were just as great. For some reason I like the JP music in DB/GT and Super but Z just feels like a major step down from "Faulconer".
