After watching all of the Memory-Cutscenes, I feel really sorry for Princess Zelda! She was just a poor girl and couldn't awake her seal power soon enough, her father was very strict.
The royals called her a wayward Princess or Princess Powerless. She wanted to study the Divine Beasts, but the king, her father forbid her to continue at some point.
She needed to do some spiritual stuff like praying at the Goddess Fountains. Urbosa mentioned, that Zelda had once prayed so long in the cold water, that she got sick. I guess she was not very confident about herself and that she always needed to be protected by Link. I think she really had feelings for him, but she couldn't confess it.
She really wanted to be worthy of the power from her ancestors, although she couldn't awake it until very late in the story. She was weak and futile, got sad and depressed. When Calamity Ganon had finally awoken from it's slumber, we all know what happend back than. All of the four Heroes died, because Ganon overtook the Divine Beasts.
Every single Guardian got brainwashed and they had fallen under his control. They destroyed the town and killed many people. Even her father, the king couldn't survive this. I must admit, that I've got goosebumps and tears in my eyes, while watching the last two flashbacks. They were so deep and emotional, something that goes to your heart.
When Zelda finally awoke her seal power it was almost to late, since Link was going to die too. You can't even imagine the psychic burden that lasts on her shoulders. And after 100 Years she still keeps fighting against Calamity Ganon to prevent him from breaking free of Hyrule Castle. What normal human could endure such pain like she did?
I would say, that this Princess Zelda had the most tragic and sorrowful past out of every Princess Zelda. She couldn't protect her kingdom, her family neither her friends.
What would you say? Has this Princess Zelda the most sorrowful life or not?

but seriously, the Zelda team missed an opportunity with the Story.
They could've made it so much more beautiful and emotional, really show the darkness of a post climactic evil. A monstrous evil that doesnt make sense.
If BOTW was given a more 3D attack on Titan story line, with NPC death, and Guardians killing children, and showing Ganon as truly a monster...man what a game, and Zelda would be like a Historia character.

This is one of my biggest issues with BotW. People keep praising it's 'story' but there really isn't any 'story.' This was Nintendo's chance to actually convey well known characters with some actual good story but it really falls through. Everyone is so one dimensional and boring. Zelda, however, is quite good in the sense that her fault is that she can't really live up to what she is supposed to be (both in the narrative of the story and how Zelda is always portrayed to the audience over all of the games) but it kinda just ends there and never goes into much more than that.
I think it was an amazing step in the right direction for Nintendo and I hope the next game doesn't feel so bland story wise
