Trying Too Hard: The Game

Every single element of the game is trying too hard to be "ironic bad" to the point that it actually is bad because the creators didn't understand the basic design principles that are needed to make their project work.

Like for fuck's sake, there's not even a single shot in their entire trailer with decent composition despite the art style being literally made for that shit. It's absurd.

Artstyle is inconsistent. The guys with the beard looks and feel diferent from the girls or the other guy without a beard. Megaman Legends had a really competent chara designer and great art directors.

Anyway the main complaint I have about the characters is that they look too much like self-inserts, or OC fanfiction characters. I say this because while everything else about the game is highly stylized, the design of the party members are weirdly realistic. They look like the exact sort of people you could run into on a typical college campus, but run through a PS1 poly filter

In RPGs and video games, heroic characters should be somewhat aspirational. Characters that we would sort of WANT to be, but the only people who want to look like these characters already do. Beard guy looks exactly like someone who would work behind the counter at Best Buy. Who wants to be that guy?
