If you have a decent enough computer you should be able to emulate 4 just fine. The only issues is that the anime cutscenes are a bit slow, and that interior lakes don't appear due to an issue with the depth filter - it kind of looks like fish are in the ground, which isn't too big of a deal. Other than that, it runs perfectly for me, and is lovely to play on if you have a vertical monitor.

My tips for RF4: Get married and have a kid ASAP. Preferably before Act 2. The pace of the game feels more natural this way, I think.

With RF3/4 there's more options and wiggle room.

Nah. Rune Factory is just one of the lucky ones. There are very few games which emulate perfectly on Citra thus far. There's a compatibility list on their website if you want to check it out.

RF3 a best, Pia all day every day.

Every time I try to play through RF4 I put it down after a couple days. Amber is top cute and the amount of content is super nice but Idunno. I think it's the town not being comfy and the other bachelorettes just not really working for me.
RF2 best girl was the cannot have blacksmith queen herself. Yue was great though. First time I played through first gen I married Alicia because she had huge tits and a witch hat. Then Yue showed up and said something about not needing the swap ticket anymore and I deleted my save and started over and married Yue.

In general everything was way too slow, even down to the animations. This would be fine if it was Harvest Moon, but since RFF had dungeon crawling and other things, you were really stretched for time, especially in the late game when you're likely growing a bunch of rare flowers for the final sets of equipment.

I remember near the end of RFF, my daily routine was something like:

ToD is fucking garbage. It tried to turn the focus more towards combat and dungeon crawling and away from the other elements of the franchise. Problems:

1. It forgot to polish the combat and dungeon crawling to a degree that would maintain the level of game quality that fans of RF fans have come to expect. Combat lacks both depth and a feeling of impact.
2. Farming is both robbed of depth AND made more time consuming. What the fuck were they thinking?
3. Even if they had successfully done what they set out to do, people like the farming, gathering, and crafting of RF. If they wanted a pure dungeon crawler with village waifus, they should have started a new franchise.

Thankfully, RF4 returned the series to its roots and made it even better than its predecessors.

I liked it because you could take on challenges well outside your level, with careful positioning and planning. I think the biggest difference I took on was a Lv.90+ map at just Lv.60. It's nice to see a game that lets you just do that, rather than forcing a grind onto you to progress.

Although yes, the stages ran on for far too long. That was one of the big problems with the games. The boss generators just had far too much HP; characters should've had a bonus of 2x or 3x damage against them, or more, to speed things along. It just isn't interesting to sit there, whacking the stupid generator for six turns in a row, only for it to spit out four bosses you then needed to kill only to go back to whacking it again for another six turns.
