So this might be sacrilege given popular opinion on /v/ but I also really love Aquatic Ruin and have always wished the concept could have been better expounded upon - the zone's brevity being my only real complaint in 2. Honestly with as good as Hydrocity already is in 3, I almost wish Aquatic Ruin could get the remix treatment from Mania.

That said Chemical Plant looks to have a new definitive version incoming and I already fucking loved that zone so no complaints here concerning S2 rep.

Nah, I just find Hydrocity Zone so much more interesting compared to Aquatic Ruin Zone. Even the water sections have more shit going on with fans, ropes you hang on, the badniks shoot projectiles & slowly bite away at your rings, you have the bubble shield so stress from drowning is minimal, you blast out of walls from the water, you run over water, there are slides that turn into corkscrews up & down, they take advantage of the water physics & speed to bring you up to higher locations for sections after a ramp in Act.2 and for me it's just so aesthetically pleasing with it's cool-blue design going on & the background having stuff like Sonic statues.

Aquatic Ruin Zone while I like it a lot (I actually didn't care much for it originally but the past few months it's really grown on me, I love it's music & theme now) doesn't have much going on underwater, you have some grounds that crumble, blocks falling down on you making you stop in place, those weird springs you run over from Chemical Plant & 1 time the arrows come out at you in Act.2 but that's about it, it can also be fucked with like this which sure is faster but I find it less interesting in comparison to Hydrocity Zone.

The level select in the Nick Arcade build still has stages from Sonic 1 listed in it, and selecting Starlight Zone takes you to Emerald Hill (Selecting other Sonic 1 stages will take you to Sonic 2 stages (Some more complete than others), save for Green Hill which is still in that build, although the collision is totally busted and it's really difficult to play through). Basically, the Sonic 2 zones were built off of Sonic 1's, and at this point they hadn't implemented the music for EH's, so SL's BGM just plays instead.

He routinely throws out "How was I supposedta know that spikes were there?! - that this was a pitfall?! - that an enemy was there?!" as a criticism without reflecting on commentary he himself even touched on in his Sonic 1 video. The game is discouraging blind speed in favor of going through it slower and more deliberate on your first play.

That and he fucking HATES limited lives and continues and never quits ragging on it. Yes. The penalty for poor play in a game designed to be accommodating for failure through its ring over health bar design is less accommodating for repeated failure and has a large setback for fail states. Sonic 3 looks fucking terrible. Sonic is fat as hell, has clown shoes, and weird, round, mickey mouse hands.

Sonic 1/CD easily have the best sprite although 2 or Sonic Crackers are also acceptable. Mania looks really nice as well, especially the color, although I prefer the Genesis versions of Tails and Knuckles.

- My favorite intro level in the entire series. It gets a lot of flak for being a Green Hill clone but I find it couldn't play farther from. Green Hill focuses on allowing the player to build speed once they've learned to time their jumps and rolls through the stepped hills and slopes. Its the best designed zone from the first game with exploration kept local to the main paths. Emerald Hill instead grants speed off the bat and opts to penalize the yet unfamiliar for running blind with zone hazards and badniks, keeping a more open air design with fewer nooks.

Remember when I said Green Hill had decently lineated main paths with exploration kept sort of in the immediate vicinity off in nooks and such? Chemical plant is that design philosophy perfected. God damned near perfect zone.

Amazing sound track, great sections of speed, fantastic exploration. The best showcase of high path/low path penalty/reward dichotomy in the series. Amazing zone.
>Flying Battery
I love Wing Fortress but find it lacking in areas. It feels under cooked a bit. I love Metropolis but it can be a bit rough on the edges. Flying battery is the best design elements of both with a heap of polish added, a phenomenal theme song, and great bosses. My all time favorite mechanical stage.
