It's a great game. Too much DLC and it removed some key features from previous TW games but you can add those back with workshop mods.

Gonna wait a year or two to get the sequel though because you know damn well the devs are going to have another 50 DLC races that are already in the base game for 10-20 bucks a pop.

This is a problem that very rarely gets the attention it deserves. For example when you're playing as the Empire, Greenskin incursions are meant to be a major threat (heck, the tutorial fight is an army of Greenskins sieging Altdorf) but in the actual campaign you beat down Skarsnik and then the entire race might as well not exist for the rest of the game, they never have any reason to head north past the Border Princes to threaten you and you have no reason to head that far south just to stamp them out. Dwarves just spend their entire campaign stamping out Greenskins, even if you wanted to wipe out the Wood Elves you can't even reasonably reach them until turn 60-80+ (after securing the badlands) and by then what's the point? They're no real threat to you any more.

I'm a Dark Elf player so obviously I'm biased when it comes to the sequel, but even if I wasn't interested in any of the new races in particular I'd still buy it just for having that many more options. Say I only like Dwarves and I really don't give a shit about any other races. I'm a hardcore Dwarf fan suddenly. On the combined map, I could at least fight those other races and have more variety in opponents, and if I got really bored with Dwarves at some point I could still check out the Lizardmen or whatever just to see if they're any good.

But if you really aren't interested in any of that and the first game has everything you might want, buying the second game just for the combined map definitely doesn't seem worth it to me.

Primarily, the problem is that the primary purpose of spellcaster lords is, unsurprisingly, to cast spells. But when you get a legendary lord, the spells they cast are exactly the same as those of regular spellcaster heroes. An Invocation of Nehek cast by Kemmler is exactly the same as an Invocation of Nehek cast by a generic Necromancer. Sure they might be able to do other unique things, but those unique things are generally not very much worth it because their main purpose is, as said, to cast spells.

In Kemmler's case it's even worse than that because you could take Mannlet von Carstein and still be able to cast that exact same Invocation of Nehek, while also being a capable melee warrior and having the option of riding a goddamn dragon.

Probably one of the best games in terms of unit diversity and battles. The campaign map is shit but I don't really care, it's one of the only total war games I cared to complete twice. Once as Empire once as Dwarfs.

The battles are great but the campaign has been simplified and stripped down so much it gets boring fast. At least for me as I really like an equal split of the two.

There are far worse games in the wider strategy genre for DLC (paradox comes to mind) and CA have been getting better at it as they go along, learning from their mistakes.

Bretonnia (a free DLC, mind) was far better than Chaos Warriors and Beastmen DLCs and Norsca seems to continue that trend.

Considering the unique animations, skeletons and models needed compared to the average copy and paste job for historical TW, it's good value.

Only shame is that campaign gameplay was dumbed down a lot but it seems like TWW2 is spicing that up a bit too.

I didn't find them rail roadeded, each of the three subfactions has different priorities (Leon's after Marienberg, Alberic has to deal with Mousillon and then either send naval armies or build high and wait for confed, Fay has to survive against WE while holding her province with the option of going south).

They have two different economic builds (mainly for flavour, but hey) and the new units added fun options and really weren't that lore unfriendly (and got approved by GW anyway).

Unless you are whining about how Foot Squires could almost go even with Chaos Warriors (and then got nerfed)?

Only bad things are their tech tree and Alberic being a super lazy ass joke of an LL.

If you're engaging in a straight line battle against Dorfs with anything other than Black Orks, you're doing it very very wrong. Ditto for archery battles against Quarrelers. You know what you get that they don't? Cavalry, monsters, and a free extra Waagh stack for every army. Cavalry that crush their archers. Monsters that ignore armour and destroy morale. Twice as many units in a fight to easily encircle and squash the Dorfs, hitting them in the backs where their armour won't mean shit. You can't just slam twenty Big 'Uns into twenty Longbears and expect to come out on top, you've got to build a stack that abuses their weaknesses. Not to mention the absurd amounts of money you can make as Greenskins just by taking over the Badlands, Dorfs can't expand nearly as easily. Focus on that and then roll up to Karaz a Karak with three full stacks, each with their own Waagh. Easy.

There's quite a bit of DLC for the game, the most notable of which that isn't free would be Beastmen and Wood Elves both come with mini-campaigns but for some reason the beastmen mini campaign sucks, I haven't gotten the Wood elf DLC so I can't comment to it's quality but it's missing Orion's bottom bitch as an LL, the other note worthy DLCs is the ever popular King and Warlord which is 2 new factions and start locations 1 dorf and 1 goblin that also has new units/buildings you can recruit plus what's called regiments of renown which are OP versions of basic units. Last one worth mentioning is the Grim and Grave DLC which adds some LLs like the dorf vs goblin one but no new start positions, then there is the blood DLC so they can both get a lower rating and make you pay for gratuitous violence, everything else is FLC.

The only valid complaint against Warhammer is the lack of formations. Even though battles are more fluid and AI is the best it's ever been, no formations is kind of retarded.

I also get the shitty siege complaints, but the sieges have always been absolute trash. You could stop a full on doomstack invasion by just defending and planting 3 top tier units in the narrow streets.

Not my favorite TW, but you could argue it's the best yet.

The only bad DLC was chaos because it was obviously cut content, beyond that their policy is pretty good, lots of free DLC and new factions still get added to the map even if you don't want them. All the factions being in the base game with the amount of work that goes into just one faction was never going to happen, so far they're delivering it better than I expected and I went in expecting the DLC to be a rip off.

Why do people pretend Chaos is bad? Every single campaign map mechanic they have makes sense, including horde infighting and infighting among the awakened tribes. Every single unit they have breathes charisma and design aesthetics. Unless you play multiplayer, Chaos is a blast to play as, since you don't have to worry about defending your towns and can burn and pillage to your heart's desire. Chaos units are also amazing in general, the only problem Chaos has is that their units cost a bit too much in multiplayer, so you can't just spam stacks of Chosen, but in singleplayer there's no such restriction and you can build an army of doom with pure infantry alone.
