Squaresoft, and japs in general, are the absolute worst in the fucking world when it comes to subtlety. If Squall being dead the whole time was supposed to be the story, they would've told you. You don't withhold a "twist" like that from the audience when you're Square and you're trying to one-up the biggest success of your entire career.

Squall never died, if he had they would've made it abundantly clear at the end instead of leaving bread crumbs scattered all over, you're just gonna have to accept that FFVIII's story is canon, and that it is completely bonkers because Square went overboard, not because they're secretly geniuses.

I can completely understand why people think this, and it would be true... if it wasn't for shit like Silent Hill 2, Mushi-shi, or authors like Masuji Ibuse, Naoya Shiga, Yasunari Kawabata.

Japs can't be the most elegant and subtle authors in the universe when they want. They just... reserve it for very special occasions.

Otherwise, yeah. Squal is Dead theory is cute, but basic inquiry into authorial intention pretty quickly shows that it's not what they had in mind. There are no actual clues towards it in the game, everything is based on advanced implications or interpretations, which is completely inconsistent with the actual standards of the company, rest of the game, or the genre.

You remember that dog you shooed away while running from X-ATM092? The writers originally intended that the dog was going to receive Ultimecia's sorceress power and not Edea. In fact, if you pay close attention in the first three discs it sets it up to happen pretty neatly, until Sakaguchi changed it at the last minute.

Ultimecias castle+boss fight+the entire final cinematic was the most satisfying game ending of all time.
