Skyrim, to be honest. Literally the first game in years, at the time, that got me hooked. Have to give it to Bethesda Game Studios for creating such a fanastic game after the mess that is New Vegas. Dawnguard was also right around the corner so I knew there's no better way to enjoy the game than playing on a purchased copy.

I pirated Nep Rebirth1 on PC when it came out for le ebin maymays and enjoyed it so much I bought a Vita with RB2 since I didn't want to wait the year+ it'd take for it to come out on PC. Then later on I bought RB1 on Vita when it was on sale too, just to have it with my other Nep cases on my shelf.

Left The Witness after finding out that I'd like the game, next year I bought it for 10€ and had a blast.
Pirated Life is Strange after playing the free chapter, played it, bought it a few months later for 5€.
Pirated Furi after tasting it in a friend's PS4, played it, got it for 11€ last summersale.

And that's about it in recent memory, I tried to pirate other games but the process is often sloppy and I would rather play the game good as it is, with no fuckery in my computer between me and the game.

Pirating is about the only way to know whether or not I'll like the game to begin with. So yes, my purchases are largely based on demoing the game this way.

If I can just borrow a friend's copy or watch (non-commentated) gameplay footage online, there may be no need to pirate. But publishers are doing their best to shut down both of these things, from putting always-online DRM in their games, to very restrictive license keys that don't allow games to be installed on other machines, to sending copyright notices to anyone who uploads game footage online. So piracy is about the only option left.
