Matchmaking

It honestly took away all my motivation to play. It somehow took the bad situation of only a few good servers to limiting the game down to a 12v12 setting and completely sucking the life out of the major communication aspects of the game

Scout update was the beginning of the end. It was the first introduction of an item which was more of a joke than a genuine part of the aesthetic (Sandman). But it was so minor most people just overlooked it or didn't care. Then they did the same thing in the Heavy update with the Sandvich complete with "om nom nom" sound effects.

Spy/Sniper update was when shit started to get out of hand, with an item which was literally just throwing a jar of piss. It also added hats which marked the beginning of the game's rapid change from team FPS game to hat-based grinding/trading game.

Mannconomy with trading, crates and unusuals was the final nail.

F2P killed community and Deus Ex items was the moment Valve stopped giving a shit about items. Yes, Mannconomy was beginning of an end, but still it was okay no matter what anons say, if valve would maintain artstyle and game remained P2P it would still be good as it is.

It still mostly fits with the games visuals, but it was the first item that had a "joke" element. The game was never particularly realistic with rocket jumps, double jumps, teleporters, exploding into hibs, etc, but none of those things were played for laughs, they were still grounded in the game's cartoonish retro-future spy fiction aesthetic. It was all still dudes killing each other violently. Getting stunned by a baseball with little stars around your head was the first step into actual cartoon territory. Like I said it was minor but it was still there and the transgressions only got worse from then on.

>>game hasn't been given a meaningful content update in over a year
What, you mean the update that they're working on right now?
That doesn't make a game dead, retard. A dead game is one with nobody playing it.

And just because content isn't being added doesn't mean we lack content to play with.
Do you actually fucking realize how much content TF2 has at this point? 9 main classes, 170+ non-reskin weapon unlocks, 15 game modes, 100+ maps, 3000 cosmetics, and a bunch of other shit.
And that's all BEFORE counting custom maps and mods. Nine years' worth of custom maps and mods. Thousands upon thousands.
>developers have straight up said that if the jungle update doesn't make them enough money it WILL be the last major update
No, you fucking dumbass, the developers said that if people didn't like the "long wait period between large updates" model that they would shift to a "short wait period between small updates" model.
>but a bunch of children and third worlders still play it so it's not dead right?
Except that's not true either, North Americans are the biggest group of TF2's population, and the average age is 16-18.
And if you came to a major multiplayer game and expected not to be playing against children and third worlders you are downright fucking retarded.

Yes, 50,000 people playing right now means that TF2 is not fucking dead, moron.
>>
>>385599430
>imagine being mad that a game goes free
A paid game going F2P has never been good for said game. The paywall helps to discourage cheating and acts as a deterrent for underage players and third-worlders.

Paid games going F2P also mean that the developer is going to try to nickel and dime players via other means —which is exactly what fucking happened with TF2. The Mannconomy, loot crates that require you to pay real money to open them, and the Steam marketplace have all completely ruined the community of the game and have gone on to ruin OTHER online multiplayer shooters from other developers as well as MOBAs like Dota 2, and is completely responsible for allowing the whole paid mods for Skyrim fiasco to happen.

I think it would be good for Engineer to get a more support-focused PDA, but your implementation is too gimmicky with too many sub-mechanics. Make it simpler and I'm on board
>>
>>385601791
>>Implying this isn't already a good way to play engie
Not viable in a serious game. Medic is a straight up better support.
>>
>>385601981
I've had an idea of a PDA.

>Replaces Sentry with basically a canon. Shoots much slower but does shit tones of damage and uses the double donk mechanic of the Loose Canon. Level 2 is two canons and level 3 gives a third canon that charges up but delivers a bigger projectile
>Dispenser replaced by a mini factory that gives health and ammo like normal but does it in bursts and can overheal. Burst times is 6>4>2 as you upgrade it
>Teleporters replaced by two "traps". One trap flings you in a direction and the other gives a shock that slows enemies. There are recharge times between the uses that is upgradable
>>
>>385599430
>imagine being mad that said free game reinvents their matchmaking system so that everyone hates it but never explains why
I can't speak for comp matchmaking because I never bother with it, but casual is just unnecessary and bad.
It's essentially the quickplay feature that the game already had, except you can't join the casual servers through the server browser like you could with quickplay which means that games take forever to backfill. Most matches end up having wildly uneven team sizes, and sometimes they're uneven before the match even starts.
All casual matchmaking really did was divide up the quickplay servers and the private servers, so that finding a good match in either is more difficult. Even if casual matchmaking worked exactly as intended and didn't constantly have fucked up uneven teams, I still wouldn't like it because it's a pointless attempt to fix something that wasn't broken.
The ideal "casual matchmaking" system would've been the one they already had before they added casual matchmaking.
>>
>>385602134
Yeah, but in 90% of players, that is a good way to be a support.

I know it isn't viable in pro play but it shouldn't be disregarded in pubs.
>>
>>385597180
Should've been /thread right there
>>
>>385602351
Nobody's saying it should be disregarded, just built upon.
>>385602275
>Replaces Sentry with basically a canon
If Sentry is going to go from hitscan-based to projectile-based, it will no longer fulfil Engineer's job to counter Scout, since he would be able to dodge Sentry fire.

Better idea: Replace the Sentry with homing rockets that move at 144% speed. It'll still perform the role of countering Scout, but it will have counterplay.
>Dispenser replaced by a mini factory that gives health and ammo like normal but does it in bursts and can overheal
Don't much see the point of changing unlock Dispenser's heal from sustained to bursts. What would this add to the game?
>Teleporters replaced by two "traps". One trap flings you in a direction and the other gives a shock that slows enemies. There are recharge times between the uses that is upgradable
Okay, this is interesting.
