Is there even a 3rd person shooter in existence that handles shooting as well as a 1st person shooter like CoD or something similar?

All 3rd person shooters feel clunky, even with FPS mechanics in them.

Because it is the best grand battle game by a mile. There isn't even a real competation for second place.

Fights naturally get more interesting when they are larger scale. The most interesting battle IRL is ww2 because it was so massive. That's the same principle by which grand battle games capture people's attention way more than any other type of vs shooter.

/v/ just hates it because they are contrarian and their explanations for it's success or ignorant, knee-jerk reactions. For example people say it's popular because it's on youtube, all games are on youtube and the developers keep pushing their own games, but that never occured to the /v/tard his mind just remembered the game exists on youtube and he came up with his knee-jerk reaction.

Now watch this post get a reply that nit-picks the game or tries to compare it to some unrelated genre.

/v/ hates it because it is generic. It doesn't do anything that other games haven't done before. There is no personality or flavour to it.

The type of person that visits /v/ is someone who has a wide breadth of video game experience. PUBG is just another "been there, done that" military shooter game. When you've played so many games and something as white bread, milquetoast as this comes around you're bound to be unimpressed.
>>
>>385591206
Then why isn't Planetside more popular if it's all about scale?
>>
>>385591138
Ok retard. The question was not why you personally do not like PUBG, it was why the game is a run away success.

The people that prefer small scale vs shooters over large ones are in the minority. And if you look at the sales of PUBG vs quake and it's many clones this is self-evident.

What you are saying is the equivlent of "No people do not like large scale battles because my favorite battle isn't world war 2 it's this tiny little encounter that was very small scale. See it's 'literally not true' because I disagree!"

>>
>>385591429
Fuck off dumbass, this has nothing to do with personal opinion. PUBG's popularity has very little to do with its scale. PUBG is popular because it's an easy game to play with friends and streamers shill it nonstop. We aren't even talking about real life either, so yes, although WW2 is the most interesting battle irl, scale is one of the least important factors in making a shooter good.
>>
>>385591206

You do realize there are very few grand battle games in existence. It's the opposite of generic retard, it's a rare thing. And as I said the other grand battle games were so undeveloped they might as well not exist.

Sounds to me like what you are whining about is that it's a shooter and you are telling me you hate shooters. Of course you personally do not like retard, you don't like the genre! /v/'s consensus is driven entirely by contrarianism.

Not true. It's a shallow attempt at video game design riding on the current wave of popular trendy games that appear on little johnnys favorite twitch stream. PUBG is a poorly unoptimized early access game already littered with microtransactions and upcoming DLC before it properly gets a full release date. Like with minecraft and its twentymillion clones, DayZ was a harbringer of this disaster we call a video game. With less gameplay than that of ARMA the only saving grace to behold of this game is it's multiplayer component in which online lag and unoptimization come together to make a truly god awful experience for anyone looking for deep gameplay interactions. Not only this but third person over the shoulder military man shooter games are a cesspool of filth from the past. This game truly shows that marketing is everything.

Different anon. You're correct that it's rare to find actual battle royale games. The problem is how it's executed and this is from looking at gameplay.

The reason why anon said that it's generic is probably the style of the game, not the core mechanics. It looks similar to Day Z and other open-world survival games visually and some of the mechanics are similar e.g looting. Honestly, it looks more like a mod of ARMA which is what it's based off.

If PUBG had more polish and spice to it such as different maps, weapons, and a different aesthetic, /v/ might give it a chance.
>>
>>385592392
>>385592519
also it's hilarious that he argued it's bad because it's 'generic' right after he was told /v/ only hates things because they are contrarian.

Hating something that is generic or common is the very defination of being contrarian. Which proves the point.

We've had 2 different confessions that they only hate it because it's the contrarian thing to do. To say "I hate generic things" is to say you are a hipster. Generic means common, and a hipster is a person who hates common things.

There are plenty of members of /v/ playing it, given that /v/ is not a secret club but average players. However it would violate the contrarian culture to admit to it having played and enjoyed it, as a result the number of hate-posters is going to be larger.

What people say about a game online actually has very little to do with what they think. You learn that when you study a bit of marketing. People will lie about what they enjoy or want for the most petty of reasons. It's all monkey signals.

It confuses me that big publishers like EA haven't cashed in on the battle royale craze yet. They just need some actually competent developers to make a game that doesn't handle like Big Rigs, give it some polish and people will buy the shit out of it.

Has it ever occured to you that maybe people play it because it's extremely casual and non punishing (you can play the game with your brain turned off for an hour every week, disconnect without penalty, no scoreboard, losing has no effect, winning makes no difference), multiplayer, designed to be played with friends, cheap, survival and with a simplistic yet addictive concept? These are elements that appeal to a very wide audience.

Your logic is that it's popular because streamers play it. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, streamers play it because it's popular and not the other way around? Of course someone who makes a living by playing video games will play the popular one. 5 fucking million people bought the game and 200k are playing it constantly, and I can assure you than only a fraction of a very tiny amount of those people care or watch streams. Not to mention, even if a fantasy world where every single person got into the game because of streamers, they wouldn't continue to play the game if it was that bad and they didn't like it, would they? What's the next thing, Zelda is only popular because it was made to appeal to toddlers? Soulsborne are popular ONLY because of the prepare to die meme, youtube montages, speedrunners and streamers? Or does it work only with games you decided you have to hate on for some reason?

We've been riding the meme train for so fucking long people are unironically believing this shilling nonsense. I didn't even buy the damn game but this is becoming pathetic.

Of course, but pointing out that the opinion I expressed is my opinion is an underhanded way of having a conversation. Just tell me why you think I'm wrong instead of beating around the bush.
>>
>>385599794
um, how can I tell you that you are wrong when your only comment is "shit taste"
>>
>>385599919
You can tell me why you think they don't have shit taste.

And by the way just because something popular doesn't mean it's good. That's an appeal to popularity - argumentum ad populum. A common fallacy.
>>
>>385590440
because it's third person, unfortunately
>>
>>385596251
fuckin kek you think h1z1 is good
>>
>>385600270
>most demanded update for the game is 1st person mode
hm
>>
>>385600064
And just because something is popular doesn't mean its bad. That's the appeal to neckbeard fallacy, common on the internet.

I think it's good, its a tactical squad based game that is fairly hardcore (even though 3rd person is a bit of a meme) with a challenging yet rewarding shooting mechanic all based within a fairly unique (it being the first stand alone game of its type, H1Z1 doesn't count as that's just a joke).

Most people have wanted to experience the battle royale feeling of being pitted against others in combat area where you have to fight to survive, its just happens that PUBG has been the fist one to do that in a decent standalone format that is accessible to new players and doesn't have 30 minute wait times or require installings 8+ mods.
>>
>>385600839
>hardcore
bruh
>>
>>385600991
>fairly hardcore
It's no ARMA3 with UI turned off but compared to 99% of games these days it is.
>>
>>385601041
The issue is you thinking "hardcore" is actually a good thing. It does LITERALLY nothing except make a game more chance-based.
>>
>>385600839
>And just because something is popular doesn't mean its bad.

And I never said that it did mean that it's bad. You're the one claiming that millions of users can't possibly be wrong about the quality of the game, not me.

And by the way battle royale games existed way before h1z1. GunZ, TFC etc.
>>
>>385599417

Isn't he dead yet?
>>
>>385590307
I don't know. A big issue with third person, in my opinion, is it allows you to peek around corners without exposing any part. Also driving in third person is super cheesy in my opinion, since when you are in a vehicle your vision is naturally restricted and you can completely circumvent that.
>>
>>385590440
Marketing campaign on social networks.

If logic reigned in these lands, people would still play CS1.5, Quake 3, UT, Halo CE and Goldeneye 64.
>>
>>385601098
hardcore typically denotes harder mechanics which would mean better players are likely to win more often, I don't see how it makes it more chance-based.
>>385601167
>millions of users can't possibly be wrong
That was not my assertion, my assertion was that blaming popularity on bandwagoning off streamers is straight up wrong and people play games because they enjoy playing it regardless of its quality (and because quality is subjective why should we say otherwise).
Such as assertion would be impossible to argue because every year a new COD is released with massive sales.
>GunZ
I really fail to see how a sword/anime style freeware game from korea is at all relatable to a proper battle royale scenario.
>>
>>385590440
Battle Royale games are the new assfaggots
>>
>>385601504
>hardcore typically denotes harder mechanics which would mean better players are likely to win more often,
Then I guess OSU is the most hardcore game in the world.
>>
>>385601504
>quality is subjective

Not entirely. For example if mario ducked when you pressed up and jumped when you pressed down, this is objectively poor quality.

>GunZ

Because swords and anime don't define battle royale. The price tag doesn't define battle royale. The developer's location doesn't define battle royale either. You moron.

A battle royale - to me - implies a lot of players competing in a free for all until there's one man standing.

GunZ had this. TFC had this. Lots of games had this. h1z1 is by no means the first. Not by a long shit.
>>
>>385601668
desu that's partly a good thing. It's shit, but it's a step in the right direction: add respawns, and you literally have the arena shooter genre.

At least, you do away with global gear progression and experienced players being "better" than others just because they have better gear, and instead they're "better" because they played the game more.

>>
>>385601898
I know that, but once in a while normies like something that's actually good.
>>
>>385601836

>>
>>385590440
>100 randos get thrown on an island and fuck around on it trying to kill one another to be the last person alive
simplifying it even further
>throw bunch of people into an open battlefield and have them duke it out
I feel like this game operates on a similar energy to games like agar.io or diep.io. They're extremely easy to get into and their combination of a highly volatile nature and open environment applied to a high player count battle royale tickles something primal in people. Even if I'm kinda stretching it to draw that comparison, maybe you'll get the idea. There's no other reason so many people would actually chug out $30 for this game.
>>
>>385601790
hmm, I don't know enough about OSU mechanics to comment on that.
But you might be right, if OSU is extremely hard to master and understand the many mechanics then I would say it is pretty hardcore.
Hardcore is about how forgiving the game is to players in a nutshell.
>>385601830
I was basing my view of what is should be off the movie Battle Royale, your description is more of just an arena battle.
>>
>>385602135
>your description is more of just an arena battle

Oh so it's another genre with an ambiguous name that has no bearing on its content (like MOBA.) Got it.
>>
>>385601898
>he means its normieshit

Doom has been THE normieshit for a good couple of years and it's still a great game.
Quake has also enjoyed a time when everyone from your little brother to that "cute" girl at work had played it.
>>
>>385602135
>Hardcore is about how forgiving the game is to players in a nutshell.

If people die in one hit it means you only need to get lucky once to get a kill.

>>
>>385602801
Hmm, maybe in a game like COD.
But you could argue that if people die in one hit then map knowledge, tactics, player positioning, prefiring and accuracy is more important in the long run.
This is why CS:GO is a far more competitive/hardcore game than any other shooter.
>>
It's another shallow zombie crafting game with shallow combat that's popular and will be forgotten in weeks.

The only people who play it are idiots who got tricked into buying the game due to the game being shilled by streamers.

There are no scoreboards, you don't win anything in particular by finishing first, and absolutely nothing happens when you die or disconnect. It was not designed to be competitive and skill based. So why on earth would you play in a way that you don't find fun and complain later?

Why not drop where most people drop, get a weapon/armor/helmet/bag in the first 2 houses and start hunting people? Don't know about you, but I'd rather finish 60th while having killed 10 guys with sick actions and lots of intense moments than finish first but with just one kill while camping in a corner the whole game.

Not enforcable in any court, unfortunately it will never get that far but we'll be beat over the head with it anyway.

As the rule being a rule: fine, ban whatever.
However, I disagree with the rule in principle.

If you want to create a player divide between streamer/non-streamer, fine but I'm out and refunding when it's out of EA.

The selective enforcement is nuts though. i've reported streamers I was watching that would team up in Solo. Not a damn thing happened and that's a much graver offence than stream sniping. But I do it a day later since nothing happened? Ding dong temp bannu.

>>385590307

main reason for this is developers mostly use 1st person as a crutch of sorts

it allows them to generally simplify controls, encourages slower less varied movement (with a few notable exceptions) and prevents a need for more complex animations and mechanics

3rd person perspective obviously has way more potential in these areas but the bottom line is most devs actually just can't pull that off so they go for a more generic 1st person style instead

some good examples Max Payne, Lost Planet 1&2, MGSV, Vanquish etc...
>>
>>385590440

The Battle Royale genre in video games has been brewing for a while now
with games like H1Z1 and The Culling

PUBG was just the final breakthrough for the genre
its not really perfect by a long shot its just better than all those other games

The real question is why is Battle Royale popular as a genre

i think people are bored of how battlefield games are now, where you spawn into gunfire half the time and die randomly. people want some downtime between fights.

>There's also a movie.
Obligatoy
>t-the manga is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the movie

Battle royale type games release something primal is us, the threat of death and the tension in the last few circles and the satisfaction of killing your enemies is amplified due to the no respawn mechanic.
>>385613079
yea dude, that's why DayZ bombed and PUBG is the best selling game on steam.

Gamers! is actually pretty fun, anon.

They reference Ace Combat in the first couple of minutes of starting the show though, so maybe I'm biased.

>be pubg dev
>ban one of the biggest streamers because he had a single live broadcasted TK incident
>also allegedly ban people that kill streamers which would somehow put this game in a more positive light by somehow helping streamers after the fact they've already died

Yeah, no.
>>
>>385615997
>I'm not buying this game because I don't like the dev and/or his actions!!

Interesting.
>>
>>385616764
No I own it and enjoy it. The thing is that simultaneously banning streams and supposedly banning people that kill streamers makes no sense.
>>
>>385597965
>killing streamers in game is not allowed
really makes me think...
>>
>>385616991
So what was your point replying
>Yeah, no.
?
>>
>>385617157
My point was his suspicion of the devs colluding with streamers against regular players is contrary to what has officially happened in the past.
>>
>>385616991

yeah right anon and the crusades never happened and the church is all good people that never raped children
>>
>>385590440

streamers being children who can't assume they can be killed

A real shame that the devs bends to them
>>
>>385599417
is this why dr.disrespect got banned in front of 20k people for teamkilling?

We had the daily totalbiscuit thread yesterday, complete with cancer jokes and politics.

GunZ and TFC play nothing like PUBG. A deathmatch mode with no respawns isn't quite enough to make a game a Battle Royale.

>Marketing campaign on social networks.

What about all the games that are marketed on social networks and don't succeed?

what a whiny fuck, people need to stop overthinking and start playing games because they enjoy it and not for weird shit like this

>well the developper's skin is too brown so I'm not playing it, 0/10 !
This is where we're heading

Game makes me so angry it's not even fun. How do I control my autism and enjoy things?
