In the games I'm referring to, these people have to play in public with large crowds under pressure from their sponsors and such. Imagine having hundreds of people yelling at you in Korean while you're trying to maintain your APM. These are also high pressure events that have the added layer of worrying about what an actual, thinking human being is planning on doing to you at the same time. When I beat a boss in a single player game, even a scrolling shooter with a difficult pattern, I still don't get level of satisfaction received from beating a high level human opponent in a multiplayer game.

People are free to do that if they want. Competitve Smash Bros fans do that despite the series creator wanting it to be mainly a party game. If they're getting enjoyment out of it, then I don't think it's anything that should be really be stopped. You can argue that it's not as demanding as playing a videogame against another opponent, sure I can see the logic there and even agree to that. But if someone wants to beat a game in a faster and/or more efficient way then others, then so be it. A lot of single player games already encourage that in general.
