Automata has both male and female leads who are greatly co-dependent and have such deep feelings for each other they literally can't live without their second half. Both of them are flawed individually, 2B is a surprisingly weak girl who just tries to maintain a kuudere mask, 9S is a surprisingly strong though a little batshit insane guy. Plenty of people here are totally fine with female protagonists. Characters like Heather from Silent Hill 3, Lara Croft from the older Tomb Raider games, and Faith from Mirror's edge are still generally considered to be great protagonists. What a lot of people dislike are female protagonists that are either Mary Sues or only define themselves character-wise in relation to them being female. Often times Western games fall into this issue which is why people here will dislike the protagonists. But it's not limited to Western games. Look at shit like Lightning from FF13, tons of people shit on her for being both incredibly bland character-wise and basically someone's waifu put into an FF game where she's so perfect and amazing.

Don't be an idiot OP. People don't mind playing 2B in Nier Automata because she's an interesting characters, plays and interesting role, and isn't made to push any real agenda outside of the creator just liking women in high heels and shit.

That's exactly the problem. She's perfect, she's an insert of someone's waifu so that she has her own game and is always amazing. She's on the fucking main cover of the second game despite not even being the main protagonist. Then, the sequel's title is fucking Lightning Returns, as if they expect people to be cheering her triumphant comeback.
