I don't like corpse runs either. It didn't ruin HK for me, but would have greatly preferred them without. The reason you don't mind them in SK is because it's linear. Corpse runs suck in non-linear games because sometimes you want to fuck off and go in a different direction than where you died, but this on guides you right back to where you died. I honestly think SK could have done without it too, it's just an overall bad mechanic in my opinion.

I liked it in Shovel Knight because you aren't weakened for your second run (in HK it takes away max Soul), the collection is instantaneous, and it tied in really well to the checkpoint-breaking mechanics.

I think a better way would have been to cap the total treasure you lose at the amount gathered in the level, though (if you start with 1k treasure, then you never lose treasure below that).

The problem is "at some point". Early on, losing 1/3rd of your max Soul is a pretty steep penalty, and you have no source of money outside of what you carry on your person (if you haven't accessed the relic buyer yet) so it really affects you negatively to die once, and at the point of the game where death is most likely because of low max HP, very limited movement mechanics, and general unfamiliarity with the game's combat.

Went in expecting nothing, came out pleasantly surprised. Not exceptional but not bad, would recommend. Sucks that you take damage when you touch the enemy's static foot with your pinkytoe tough. Also the health mechanic is a bit weird since apart from The Radiance and a few exceptions everything does the same amount of damage. Because of this you can abuse just tanking hits, going ham on the attacks and pray the boss dies before you do.

Just beat it a little bit ago and I thought it was pretty amazing after just finding good when I initially started playing. Pretty satisfying progression system with art that grew on me over time with an interesting world. Kind of wish there were just a couple or maybe even just one more well placed stag point in the southern part of the map.

It is fine if you never play it but it is nothing like Dark Souls. Hell people fucking compare Zelda BotW to Dark Souls simply because you can die in one hit. When people say "X is like Dark Souls" they generally mean it isn't casual to the point of being unable to die.

Hollow Knight in that sense is like Dark Souls I guess, you start out being able to take 5 hits with very few enemy attacks being able to count as two but surprisingly the game is well balanced around this idea. Where dark souls may give you 100+ HP but have enemies being able to kill you in three hits anyway Hollow Knight just trim out the fat and tell you how it is from the get go. Also unlike Dark Souls where you gotta learn the timing for everything or break the game with magic Hollow Knight is more comparable to Megaman X but with higher risk/reward.

Beside the death system with the ability to reclaim your money I honestly don't get any kind of Dark Souls vibe from Hollow Knight. The game remind me of Castlevaina SotN when exploring due to how fucking easy it is but then have Bosses that remind me of Megaman X that actually can be challenging if you try to rush them. I highly recommend giving the game some research or even pirate it if you must play it yourself first. It isn't a meme game at all. I can guarantee on your first blind play through you will have over 24 hours on your save file and still most likely haven't explore the full map at that point. It is stupidly good and it is just a shame you shooting yourself in the foot just because 4chan rotted your brain with some stupid idea that it is a meme game just because of how it looks.

I can see the point that it's all underground, and Greenpath looked pretty neat. But they really should've used a couple more colors per area. I liked Greenpath because it had greens as well as some blues and purples. Making entire areas dark blue + grey was a mistake.
Maybe I'm just not the target audience, but the simplistic combat didn't feel all that engaging to me.

I dunno, maybe Ori and the Blind Forest made me more resistant against the use and abuse of black in Metroidvanias. So, I didn't mind the artstyle or the "underground" feel. Although most of my HK screenshots are from Greenpath, I agree that it's the best looking zone of the game
