Games are different in that the progression is based entirely on how the game works and in most cases how good you are/how much it rewards your skill.
A mechanically unenjoyable game shouldn't be given the time of day unless something else manages to hook you like the character writing or story.

When you understand where the game is going. For shovelware shit it shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes but some things can be deceptive, like MGSV when you realize the first couple of hours is the rest of the game.

This really depends on your personal preferences, so take mine on a grain of salt. I give a game one, may be two play sessions. A session may be an hour or three depending on how comfortable I am. Still, I try to cut games off early because the more I play, the more vested I am in seeing it through, even if it isn't very fun.
