My guild and I went to GW2 after Asheron's Call shut down. I wasn't attracted to the style at all but I decided to give it a try anyway.

At this point I believe I could come up with better MMO. So instead of playing games, I've been inspired to design a game with features that have been absent from roleplaying games for almost 20 years.

I used to complain that the kids these days are too scared of competition to actually risk anything of value. Well the popularity of PUBG tells me there is a huge percentage of players who are ready for hardcore games again

Reminder that this expansion is going to be barebones in story. Just look back at how lame the Mordremoth end was. You only kill the "mind" of it in the story, and have to do organized pve to kill the body. Expansion 2 has to deal with both Balthazar raising an army and him going after Kralkatorrik. If we're lucky we'll get to kill one of them, but the expectation will be neither die.

Your personal story is alright up to about lvl30, then it is abandoned for good and shifts completely onto some salad git you play second fiddle to for the rest of the game, you defeat the big bad by sitting in a turret and mashing 1.

After that there are chunks of story that you now have to purchase in addition to the game, there are also chunks of story and the associated dungeons and items that are gone for good. I stopped around this time so I'm not exactly sure how much is even still there, but just know they came up with ANOTHER salady shit even worse than the first asshole. Balthazar just appeared in the between-expansion story that just ended this week. There was no prior build up to it or anything, and he just casually reveals himself to the New Destiny's Edge group. He is in the human world again because an ~unknown entity~ is weakening him so bad he wanted to absorb Primordus and/or Jormag to restore his power (see first point). We make Jormag and Primordus go back to sleep through ~magic~ and Balthazar fucks off to go kill Kralk instead.

I don't mind the game. The writting is awful at all times, but that applies to all MMOs. At least the writters have noticed and even they aren't taking the writting seriously anymore. It's just comedy crap which it may as well be.
Exploration and whatnot is good. Designs for armors and outfits are hit or miss, but the new specializations did great job in making classes funs, new ones sound promising specially finally giving two options for specializations.

I've been playing the first game again and while I love it, the age on it is clear and it's not really that accessible of a title. GW2 probably made more money than a GW1-2 would've. A true successor to GW1 would probably have to make some compromises to compete on the market. My hope is something with the same skill system, build variety and PvP focus with the compromises made elsewhere.

Grouping issues were standard issue during its time. A successor could benefit from better party functions, but back in its day it was actually way better about getting people to play together than any of its competitors were. At its peak things like town running and elite skill hunting groups created a great ecosystem.

All the issues of single-player parties only came around after the game started dying in preparation for Guild Wars 2.

GW1 was the second biggest MMO of its generation. It was one of the few games that survived the competition with WoW.

While the people claiming that it was always widely loved are wrong, so are the people claiming that there was never a large GW1 playerbase and that the game was largely hated. There's always a vocal minority that complains about a game even while playing it, you can observe them in all the XIV threads when it's got the second biggest share on the market. The truth just sits inbetween the extremes and it's the most obvious one, people liked it or they didn't.

I do think that GW1 is outdated and a "remake" of it would be a bad idea, but there's so much it did right that's been abandoned. What should've happened was something that took the best parts of GW1, turned it into a proper MMO and applied modern knowledge of the genre. Getting GW2 and what it is instead was a mistake. It might've performed better than a GW1 clone would've but there was definitely some way to pick up new playerbase without alienating all of the old.

How is the ERP community in this game?

From my own experience I had spent around 7 years playing almost daily GW1 with friends and guildmates (PvE, PvP, GvG, etc). However in GW2 I have only spent playing with friends 2-3 months, after this everyone just left to play other games...

GW1 was my lifeblood.

The amount of shit you could do was insane. I was an avid PvPer and always will be, yet GW1 had this beautiful cross-play between PvE and PvP that is still to this day - non existent in any MMO I've played.

A game built upon proper teamwork, build diversification and skill.

Anyone that had ever played GvG in GW1 in it's prime days will know what I'm talking about. The course for 7 other players on your team to be on the same page as you. Having a person calling out "spikes" and fake spikes on targets. The pure skill involved in LoSing D-shot or baiting their mesmers. It will always have a place in my heart.

And what happened to it all? Well following suit with diversification from GW1, they decided to be even more diverse by adding lesbian characters, social justice elements, a stagnant crafting system seen in 99% of F2P MMOs and a PvP scene which GW1 built itself upon - utterly destroyed and non existent.

Yes, I will never not be mad. What they did to this game is an abomination and the ONLY reason they called it Guild Wars 2, was to use the GW name to sell copies; which it did.

If there was ever a GW3, it would tank.

Pretty hyped for the expansion honestly. They've really improved the past year in terms of content and delivering on said content. Most of this thread is outdated memes and shitposts from 2012 and doesn't apply to the current game at all.
