Both are great. Dark Project for tomb raiding, Metal Age for burglary.
>>
2's boss stage was unintuitive puzzle shit. At least 1 let you be an actual fucking thief right on through to the end.
>>
>>385514272
Not really, TDP has more missions dedicated to actual stealing
It's a better game in every regard.
>>
>there are people who feel the need to rank everything when it doesn't fucking matter since they're both great games
>>
2 is better in every way except for the final level
>>
>>385515078
I feel like Thief 2 is unjustifiably hailed as the best Thief, which makes me irritated. Happy?
>>
>>385515179

I agree with this. I mean T2 is good, but the fanbase overrates it too much. I actually like both 1 and 3 over 2.

Probably, but you're still a faggot who owns Mac

1 is definitely better just because it has that variety in levels as you aren't just locked to levels with only humans.

These levels in Thief 2 were all pretty poor:

>Trace the Courier
You just follow Mosley and then a Pagan around for half an hour and goddamn is it boring. It's essentially Act 3 from MGS4 but to a lesser degree.

>Trail of Blood
This was actually the most linear level in Thief's history before Thi4f came along. It's way too easy to sneak around with all of the grass and shadows everywhere.

>Masks / Casing the Joint
These are the same levels needlessly repeated.

>Eavesdropping
The level's title so accurately reflects the problem with it that it's just sad. You are forced to spend 10 minutes listening to a conversation between Karras and Truart. You cannot move or you will fail the mission. The rest of the level is relatively short.

And in general you've got the city watch in blue uniforms and the mechanists to keep you company for the majority of these levels. And the mechanist devices are just plain boring to deal with. PLEASE BE WARNED. A MISGUIDED SOUL.
>>
>>385516046
You forgot to mention Kidnap. Which is really one of the worst missions in the game.

I actually like Kidnap the most in Thief 2. It's tightly designed and you feel like a fucking god sneaking your way around cramped place that is swarming with mechanists. It was also nice to get back to Lost City, which I loved in T1.

Threadly reminder that The Trickster did nothing wrong, he just wanted humans to return to respecting the natural ways, and stop being so reliant on technology.
Hammerites/Mechanists are cucks.
>>
>>385516561
Also Thief 2's last missions are getting weak.
Everything after angels watch is pretty meh.

Maw of chaos isn't really a good mission either, but the ones before that are way better.

Best missions are still Return to the Haunted cathedral and Cragscleft Prison especially if you played Ultima Underworld

Thou wouldst deny the tools that the Master Builder hast given us. To better ourselves and brings us from the cold and dark, wretched forests.

I guess this is what they call kinesthetic controls. Everything in this game is calibrated just right, the speed, the sense of weight, how you lean to the side, hop you jump, how Garrett umphs when he's vaulting the ledge, how your character slows down to nock the arrow, or wobbles a bit when climbing the rope, or swings a sword. Thief just feels fantastic to move around in.

Same, pretty sure this is the thing. When most people play Thief 1, they get completely thrown off because of the expectations. When they get to Thief 2 they see it doesn't have the spooky-scary stuff and feel that's what it should have been in the first place. Then if they ever bother with replays, the undead shit really ends up growing on you and you realize how important all those levels are to the overall atmosphere of the game and series as a whole.
Pic related is my personal favorite in the game, ruined, fallen city overun with creatures. Always thought it was missnamed though imo. The Haunted Cathedral is the objective to get to, but not the draw of the level.

This was the biggest NOPE moment in the game for it. I just sprinted to grab that letter like crazy. It's about as bad as first time meeting Haunts in Thief 1
>open a door to a normal looking mansion
>suddenly two fuckers jump right in your face
>completely freeze from shock
>it's completely dark so they don't actually see
>stand 1 meter away from you for a while and go away while making spooky sounds
Some level design decisions in these games feel so deliberate and ingenious

Anyone else think Life of the Party is pretty overrated?

The whole rooftop part was really linear, it has cool shit like the drunk waifufags and the book easter egg, but otherwise it's just meh sneaking, and the Angelwatch section can be pretty annoying if you miss any of the things required. It's a great mission, but top 5? Come on.

Pic related are my ratings for TG FM's I've played. I try to use the full scale so even the 2.5 star one's still a fun mission, it's just not very remarkable and has a few problems like poorly translated readables. Haven't played many T2 FM's yet but Inverted Manse is 5/5.

The originals have a charm that can't be replicated in modern games without just looking goofy, in it's writing, audio and even visually. The same charm was lost with Deus Ex, hell even before HR, in IW. But I'd at least settle for a Thief game with good mechanics and gameplay.

That Viktoria thing would have to be a fan mission.

As someone who has drawn Garrett with a scar it's because it's really easy to make the mental association with losing an eye with it getting skin broken, plus nearly every other character ever with a missing eye has a scar so it's easy to forget that garrett doesn't actually have one.

>Trace the Courier
I agree it's shit, but just because it rehashes an existing map, if it was an original map and something akin to "Assassins" from TDP, it would have been god-tier.
>Trail of Blood
Even though the environment doesn't fit the rest of the game, it makes sense story-wise and is needed to establish Victoria working together with Garrett. Plus the mission itself was great, except extremely linear (probably the most linear mission in the original duology, together with "Into the Maw of Chaos") and sadly pretty short.
>Masks/Casing the Joint
Yes, the two missions share the same map, but the map is excellent. "Casing the Joint" is shit because you absolutely must not be seen, you have no freedom in approaching the level. "Masks" is fantastic, on the other hand, because you can do whatever you want on the map.
>Eavesdropping
>You are forced to spend 10 minutes listening to a conversation between Karras and Truart. You cannot move or you will fail the mission.
Why is this bad?
>The rest of the level is relatively short.
But well-designed. How did you not love the map, even though it's short? The first seven missions in Thief 2 are perfect, the game shits the bed in the second half because it was rushed.
The bad missions of Thief 2 are "Trace the Courier", "Kidnap", "Casing the Joint" and "Sabotage at Soulforge", everything else is 10/10.

Explain to me, why do you think that "Sabotage at Soulforge" is good?
Thief Gold has some god-tier stuff, but it shits the bed so hard near the end, with "Escape" and especially "Strange Bedfellows", that it simply can't be better than Thief 2. The worst missions in Thief 2 are (mostly) the ones that rehash an existing map. Better to play a same map another time, than a shitty new one.

"Into the Maw of Chaos" was greatly designed, even though it was linear. It was fun to slide down and dogde stuff, then there's that water section, or the one where you're climbing inside a tree (Thief Gold had a lot more platforming than II, which I love) etc.
I agree that Soulforge is probably the closest to what Thief is, but I immensely dislike the missoin, maybe because the Cathedral looks so dull and ugly (not to mention you only have robots and you can't explore to find hidden goodies or rob people), or because it could have been done better, for example if you infiltrated Karras' mansion and killed him stealthily.

I agree on both of your points, if they had way more transformed mechanist to fill it, maybe it wont feel so empty as it is, and the no loot too, if there was some vault or something filled with blueprints or valuables, even using the factories to build something to open it, and some scattered pieces here and there would be perfect.
But after the mansion, you were WTF too much to even blink about the maw, thats why IMO is below soulforge, but also i love steampunk too much to not be impartial.

first time playing this game, I'm now at the lost city level. I'm actually surprised at how good it is. I would also enjoy a game like this without the zombie/magic stuff, I liked the game better when before the zombie church level.
>>
>>385543068
Keep up, the undead levels of Gold are sketchy but they get better, either way you should play 1 before 2.

Thief 2 is way more sneaking oriented by the way, so don't worry about it.
>>
>>385513881
>There are people that don't equally like both games

They are both great for their own reasons, Thief 1 has supernatural spookiness while Thief 2 is more of a pure stealth game. Thief 2 also had the better final level unlike Thief 1 where you literally walk down to the Trickster to win, the Soulforge is an actual final level that puts all your skills to the test to sneak around a a huge build made out of nothing but hard loud cold metal.
>>
>>385516046
More focus on stealth gameplay, a bunch of god-tier levels, mostly stacked towards the beginning of the game.
It was pretty good.
But yeah, it had its bad points too.

I've felt this pain in DMC, Thief, and Silent Hill. I refused to watch MGSV trailers before it was released, it paid out. Not even joking, I didn't watch a single one. "Hype" is a mind killer, and an advertising tool.

Much so is the replacement of an existing franchise under the guise of "sticking to their roots".

Thief is genuinely less clunky and slow than most modern games I've played, in that it doesn't restrict your movement. There are basically no arbitrary invisible walls, or segments where your forced to move at walking speed, or context sensitive movement abilities (unless you count mantling, but that only makes physical sense on a ledge anyway). Once you have a feel for the volume of footsteps on all the different surfaces you can move through levels almost without stopping, without being detected.

t. played Thief for the first time in 2012

Not so sure about that, because your expectations during those trailers were for an experience you'd yourself experience soon.

Whereas if I view them, I can see them for what they are, beautiful segments/cutscenes. I might even put meaning into them because I invested time into the game. But I now know better.

My disappointment was minimal. And I can now watch the cutscenes in order and appreciate them for what they are. Marketing.

Because it was made for consoles instead of being PC exclusive like it should've been. They also got rid of the no killing rule for expert difficulty and 3rd person view shouldn't be a thing in Thief.
>>
I don't really have the intelligence or patience to write out an essay on why Thief 1 2 are art, but they truly are. Examples of the eyes in blood of the trail and Constantine's mansion give way to amazing storytelling without having to tell you directly.
>>
>>385528815
Kind of. I think the rooftop segment is very good, but Angelwatch is pretty shit
>>
>>385558573
Because it's shit.

I had a friend who said DS was sick as fuck and Gold/2 was too old for him.
We're not friends any more.

>And hype that big only comes around a handful of times in a lifetime
I am not disputing that, I think I know how you're feeling. The issue I have is the hype itself. Because you think that:
>getting super hyped and then watching it all come crashing down is something that you have to be there for to appreciate

That is just marketing working on a massive scale. You being let down is the equivalent of seeing a bullshot and thinking it's in-game.
>>
I like 2 the most, but I think 3 is better than 1. Although the highs of 1 are probably higher than the highs of 3, Shalebridge aside.
>>
>>385559104
>They also got rid of the no killing rule for expert difficulty

>Kill someone in the game
>MISSION FAILED

WHOAH SO IMMERSIVE! That's just a dumb rule to be enforced anon. Call it casualization, what the fuck ever. It's stupid. Find another way to penalize the player, but don't end the fucking game because someone happened to drown or some shit.
>>
>>385559691
Are you a fucking amateur? Stop putting bodies in the water then, stupid paisano.
>>
>>385559691
Professionals don't leave a mess, Taffer.
>>
>>385559804
Not the point kiddo. The game is a self-proclaimed immersive sim. Shit like that goes against what the game set out to achieve in the first place.

>>385559885
I'm not out to kill shit, but like I said, find another way to penalize the player, not interrupt the game itself.
>>
>>385559513
Yes, drumming up hype is a form of marketing. But that's no reason to deprive yourself of a great experience. Do you not read flyers before you go grocery shopping?
>>
>>385559956
>wahh my health bar is empty and the game ended! devs need to find another way to penalize players instead of just interrupting the game!
Maybe knock the difficulty down if you're gonna be a little bitch.

You say that mockingly but that was the purpose of revival chambers in System Shock.

And?

Dishonored could've been a good spiritual successor to Thief but they went full retard with 2. Instead of fucking rehashing the same fucking story they should've made a a new story that is about a thief who lives in the nice area of town that is free of the plague and has to steal so he can pay to rent. One day after scoring big he gets the Outsider's attention who gives him magic powers which he then uses to be a even better thief. Last mission would have you outsmart and steal from Corvo at the tower or some shit.
>>
>>385513881
Thief II had the better highlights but some dross, Thief was overal a more solid experience but clunky in parts.

Both are fantastic.
>>
Thi4f is the best Thief game and anyone disagrees is reddit.
>>
>>385560459
but we gotta justify the title being "Dishonored 2" by dishonoring both Corvo and Emily!
>>
>>385560459

the story was the least of its problems

I am not, I don't expect you to believe me, but I have a text file with the greatest MGSV cutscenes in what I assume is chronological order, just for my enjoyment.

But that is after the fact. I didn't let it influence me, to buy the game. That's the bottom line. I can't make it any more clear than that.

Haha, nice non-argument fag. Yes, dieing tends to have the effect of things ending. Meanwhile if I run over a dog in the road, I don't suddenly happen go into a coma.

What, does killing a guard suddenly put Garret in shock, roll over and suddenly he can no longer continue taffing about? Get real you dense fucker.

Filtered.
>>
>>385560447
Clearly it was something that was of concern to LGS, so mocking somebody for criticizing a similar but even less sensical situation (a game over for killing somebody) makes no sense.
>>
>>385560854
No, but he fucking retires because he realizes he's not so fucking hot as he thinks.
Retard, Garrett has the hugest ego in the City. Without it, Garrett may as well hang himself for being a piece of shit sneak thief taffer rat.

But it's hype itself I disapprove of. Especially during the release of a game, because it's all marke- FUCK IT.
