Crash Team Racing is a great game, but Diddy Kong Racing did it better in multiple aspects.
The character design is better, and the characters are more distinct.
There is a better atmosphere, the hub world is much more fun to explore.
Race tracks are better designed with more to do.
There is more variety in gameplay with different kinds of vehicles and more kinds of missions.
The OST is much better.
The boss fights are challenging, distinct, and varied, and in Crash Team Racing they are not.

Extremely solid controls that give the player 100% control over their character
Great variety of weapons based off the Crash series
Lots of amazing and memorable tracks to choose from
Shortcuts in almost every track that require a lot of skill to reach
Huge selection of characters (once you unlock them all) from the Crash series that all control differently (with a few clones in terms of stats). The only ones that are really missing are N. Brio and Koala Kong
Fucking excellent soundtrack that is very Crash Bandicoot
Amazing adventure mode that'll keep your attention for quite a while if you're going for 100%
Time Trials allow you to race against ghosts (N. Tropy and N. Oxide). You can unlock N. Tropy by beating his ghost, but not N. Oxide. I'd say this is the only flaw I can find in the entire game.

The game is just fucking solid as hell, especially for a team of devs who had never created a kart racer before. It just blew absolutely every other kart racer out of the water, with some debate between CTR and Diddy Kong Racing.

Barely any of them are memorable though, and a lot of them don't come from the DK games and were designed specifically for the game. Whereas CTR already uses a huge selection of memorable characters from the series.

Crash, Rippa Roo, Cortex, and N Gin are the only really memorable Crash characters.
The Komodo Dragon is pretty cool too. Crash's sister, Taz Tiger, and Pinstripe are a bit meh.
DKR has Diddy Kong, Banjo, Conker, Pipsy, Drumstick, Timber, Krunch, Taj the Genie, and TT. They're all pretty memorable and different from each other. Taj isn't playable but he's still a great and memorbale character.
I recently replayed CTR. Still a great game but not as good as DKR

The only not-who's in DKR are Diddy, Banjo, and Conker because they all have their own games. Maaaybe Krunch for Kremlins being the main baddies in the DK series, but even then, Krunch was still made for this game. Everyone else basically doesn't exist outside DKR.
