There is a multiverse, and there is always a doom guy. There is, however, only one hell.
Think of it like the center with hundreds of strands coming out of it.

D44m marine is the same one from 1, 2 (possibly 64, but that could also be another dimension) who decided to stay in hell after he went there at the end of 2 so he could continue fucking up the demons. The demons, unable to kill him, thought it would be a better idea to trap him. This only mad him angrier. The demons, not wanting their version of the boogyman to be set free, put tons of warnings all over the box of a great evil that laid inside. Robodoctor, thinking it was some super demon (and therefor some new source of continued research/energy), opened it and was shocked to see a normal human.

D44m is a different universe from the original, as well as different than 3.

they should have ended the game with doom guy breaking free from that weird tether thing and destroying the robot. then many other samuel hayden's would appear on the screens in the room. i feel like the tether thing pussifies doom guy too much. maybe they are saving it for the sequel but i wanted a satisfying ending not a cliffhanger.
