Dragon Quest X looks like the only good MMO out there right now. Because its trying to be more like old MMOs such as Ultima Online and not a WoW clone. Yuji Horii actually stated he wanted to make an MMO as far back as 1999, but waited until it was more economically fesiable, which meant after Final Fantasy XI proved to be a success. And he got the FFXI team to make the game.

All that being said, a lot of Japanese reviews say the game has one of the best stories in the series. I'd be fine playing it just for the single player. Anythings gotta be better than the story in Final Fantasy XIV.

To be fair, they should have expected this. SquareEnix did the same shit with Final Fantasy XIV. If you own the game on PS3, your account won't work on Steam or PS4. FFIII didn't improve what was already a really shallow and boring story. It also added new gameplay issues that weren't even present in the original. Enemies got ridiculous levels of HP and ATK meaning you had to grind to catch up to them. While your party members got less EXP than the original game so they had to grind more. That final dungeon is the worst dungeon I've ever played in a game. They also lacked Onion Knight behind a shitty wifi gimmick that was so bad, you can't even get it if you try to replay the game today.

Final Fantasy IV also didn't fix the story or gameplay issues the original Japanese game had. And like FFIII, they increased enemy stats, which means you had to grind in a game that shouldn't have grinding at all. To counter this, they added an augment system. Stuff like omnicure and dualcast really even the odds. Problem is, you don't know how to get those without looking up in a guide. So on your first playthrough, almost no one gets those augments. And the final area of the game becomes fucking stupid. Without those augments you need to be level 90+ to get through the moon. With the augments, you can do it at more like level 70. Though a couple enemies can still one shot your whole party.

Dragon Quest also has the benefit of the original creator looking over every production. Even the remakes. Whenever a DQ game is going to be remade, Yuji Horii goes back and plays the whole original game and takes notes for what the remake should add/improve. Then he plays the finished remake to test it before it gets released.

In an interview, Yuji Horii said he was amazed at how hard Dragon Quest VII was when he went back to replay the PS1 game. Which made me feel good. I thought I was just a loser who was having trouble with the game.

Anyway, Final Fantasy doesn't have this level of oversight. Or any oversight at all. There's anywhere from 6-10 different groups making FF games at any given time. So many of them are bound to be rushed or lack polish.

Funny. My friends tried to get me into Persona 3 and I skipped the game precisely because the voices were so cringe-worthy. And they said it had no dual audio option. I've skipped many other Japanese games because of a lack of Japanese voice, like Final Fantasy XIII which I didn't buy until the PC version added in dual audio.

No, IGN will give it an 8.5. The western localization will add voices and shitty dialects in, which the media thinks makes the games more popular. And because of this, IGN will think the game is getting hype. So they will inflate the score compared to what they normally would give it. Their reviews are based entirely on how much hype and marketing a game gets. Not the actual content of the game. Dragon Quest XI will get similar levels of hype as DQVIII did.

Foreign words. There's a lot of cases where a foreign word would be spelled the same as an existing Japanese word. They differentiate between these by using Hiragana for the Japanese word and Katakana for the foreign word. The only DQ games to ever have voice acting were Dragon Quest VIII, Swords, Heroes and technically Kenshin. When it comes to sales, all those DQ games are some of the lower selling DQ games in Japan. There's nothing to really indicate to Armor Project that voice acting helped sell games so it was probably the primary reason they didn't bother with voices in Dragon Quest XI. Also the fact that there isn't a big advantage to having voices. If you do voices bad, it can completely destroy your game (see Metroid Other M or Zelda BotW). But if do voices well, people don't notice. To do voices 'well', they need to be natural and not stand out. And you can get the same effect by not having voices. But if you add in voices, there's a huge chance people won't like them and it hurts you game.

In the west, Dragon Quest VIII has become synonymous with good voice acting. Though that's mostly tied to just one character (Yangus) and not really the quality of the overall game. Andall the other games which had voice acting are pretty much ignored, both because they were really cheesy and because the novelty of voice acting in games wore off. Voices are just a standard thing in video games now. So they don't get judged when they are good, just when they are bad. Western sales of DQ also didn't see any noticable improvement from the addition of voice acting. What sold DQVIII was marketing, not the voice acting. And voices sure didn't help sell Swords or Heroes.

tl;dr Voice Acting has a bigger chance to hurt a game than help it. And Dragon Quest XI not having voices is actually making it stand out in an age when every other JRPG is trying to focus on famous seiyuu as a primary selling point.

The real reason XI doesn't have voice acting is because Horii is a writer through and through, and not having voice acting allowed him to make changes to the script up until the very end.

The designs for this game are the biggest change DQ has had. Some people don't even recognize it's Dragon Quest until people tell them. The only real tell are the eyes. Even the characters hair don't look like typical Toriyama designs.
