I usually like turn-based RPG's but DQ is so bland that it's really hard to get through. The last DQ game i tried to play was 7 on the 3DS and it was such a slog. If the story and characters were really good i might be able to get over the bare bones combat but sadly the story is just as bland as it's gameplay. I will probably get 11 for ether the PS4 or Switch but if i still don't like it i'm officially done with DQ.

8 is the normie-tier one where they started actually making concessions to modern gaming. Give that one a try, it actually feels like other RPGs in the genre.

Dragon Quest games are weird because they're not about drama or personal stories; They're entirely about the world and large, mythology-style stories. Shit rains down on the protagonists all the time, but they don't angst out about it or take entire disks off to think about their feelings, for example.

Because of that, though, it basically flies in the face of modern cinematography and storytelling, which is almost entirely about pathos and human drama. It can be hard to get into, especially since the combat is pretty unforgiving by RPG standards.

That being said, starting with DQ's 1-3 is hard mode. They're barebones NES games that are about 2/3 grinding and figuring out what the fuck you're supposed to be doing. 4-6 are better, but still confusing at times and often cryptic. 7 is a game ballsy enough to ask you to wait 3 hours before getting into the first combat against slimes, but that's not necessarily a good thing; On the other hand, it's also the game where you take huge parties and after you save the world you go on a saved-the-world tour around the world, it's hilarious.

DQV story was amazing but it was kind of a mess, the monster recruiting wasn't well done at all, late game recruitable monsters ruin the game, and using monsters makes you miss party chat.
