I've never understood the appeal of MMOs over simply just playing a normal multiplayer game.

It's an activity to engage with other players every week. You want some excuse to log in and hang out? Well, you still have you character to level with the group, still had that equipment you needed to grind for drops, still had those materials to grind for crafting components, etc. It gives you an excuse to log in and play every week.

The problem is that MMOs never seemed to figure out the level difference problem, so you couldn't just drop out for a week because you were busy or something. There was no casual jumping in to participate unless everyone was already at max level. The more they tried to "fix" the situation with party level restrictions and EXP penalties, the more they just fucked it all up.

Huh, I think I get it. Then again, I'm probably biased because I don't like multiplayer features in RPGs.

I play a lot of RTS and FPS with friends but I never could understand the appeal of RPGs with multiplayer beyond stuff like classic Phantasy Star.
