That's what happened to DayZ. As hipster as this sounds the game's success is what doomed it. It pushed out the ARMA crowd that originally played the mod and all the streamers and "lolepic" kids that only want team deathmatch and dickass behavior are the ones left. I remember when the mod first came out you could run into strangers and genuinely help each other out. Some of the best experiences I had was running into strangers and all of us trying to sneak through zombie infested towns for supplies and then parting ways after getting what we needed. A game where it's always a question whether you can work with the guy you just met or it'll be violence from the start or betrayal at the end is interesting. When it's always a fight isn't. The DayZ mod with Arma nerds was an entirely different game than the DayZ mod that got popular.

same here my dude, I played that shit on the first week it went public and it was exactly like CHKilroy's "the days ahead" series. It was pure COOP in the chaos, everybody linking up in huge groups like it really was the apocalypse. I still remember my first death from a player like three weeks later once people started shooting on sight. Pre-dayz popularity ArmA in general was so much fucking better than the never ending wasteland and epoch servers that we have now. If it wasn't for all of the weird unique game types that came out of pre-dayz arma we would have never hap PUBG or DayZ. But because that guy made DZS then rocket and TAWtonic both spun off DZS into DayZ and wasteland is arma now the game that it is.
I miss old ArmA every single day, but I will never get to feel it again. Every now and then I hook up with a group of people (rip /a3g/) and play some closed missions, but its just not the same when you're playing with the same people every day.

Game is already on a downhill spiral. The studio has no fucking clue what to do, how to code, program or maintain a game long term. Patches are already weeks and months late, and when they go live there are a bajillion things wrong that have to be hotfixed ASAP or the game is unplayable

After the fact there are countless of other bugs that make it in that dont get fixed, that are just as infuriating or gamebreaking. Meanwhile the servers are atrocious, and the code even more atrocious

And if there was an endgame beyond "go north and get geared up and then have literally nothing else to do lmao."
