Try Odin Sphere Leifthraiser. It's not just a HD update, they completely changed the level and battle system. There is even an option to play classic mode.

Traditional JRPGs have not advanced in any way since the mid 2000s. Even the best ones out now are just copies of games from back then and earlier. So yeah, it was a waste. Why don't you play a game that actually will benefit somewhat from modern hardware, such as Dirt Rally, Titanfall 2, Dark Souls 3 or Tekken 7?

Tekken 7 I wanted to get but all my friends have it on Steam, I'm bad at Souls games if bloodborne is any indication, Titanfall seems meh, I haven't heard of Dirt Rally so I'll check it out.

I really love Titanfall 2. It's cheap and of the three modes - campaign, frontier defense, and vs multiplayer, I imagine most people would like at least one. But Dirt Rally is my favorite driving game in many years. I have that on PC, get it on whichever you prefer, but that should keep you busy for at least a month.
