They were significantly cheaper than the PC counterpart due to design, thus why they are called "consoles" which is short for "consolidated hardware".
Every console from the NES onward was consolidated from arcade or pc hardware.

This. id made the push for dedicated graphics hardware which gave PCs a huge edge. Before then, that kind of hardware was primarily reserved for consoles. Most computers didn't ship with a GPU, and most games didn't even require it. If you remember many old games having a toggle for software/hardware modes.

That's a false memory. Consoles have always had weak hardware to keep the cost down. The main advantage to consoles back in the day was a simpler plug-and-play setup for the kids, confused grandparents, and anyone who wasn't interested in learning how to navigate through DOS. It wasn't until we had more standardized hardware structure, Windows GUI, and DirectX that PC's benefits shined above everything else. Now it's just a matter or everyone figuring out what the smart decision is.
