What's the fastest you ever dropped an MMO?

>Try Revelation Online out of curiosity
>Pick the high tech gunner class because they apparently get a mech
>Game starts off in some generic ching chong dojo
>>
i dropped black desert after reaching the first village
>>
>>385352976
Black desert, soon after I got that donkey mount and realized that it's just a single play game with mmo terminology. I would've dropped FFXIV way sooner but the fags here insisted it got good 100 levels later
>>
Revo was probably the fastest for me too. Fucking generic as shit and the shills saying "it has houses and flying mounts" got so butthurt it was funny.
>>
When I find out a game is an MMO, I drop it.
>>
>>385352890
guild wars 2, made it the second zone and fucked off. Being able to play as a qt3.14 c@ wasn't
worth it
>>
>>385352890

Guild Wars. Everyone kept claiming it was the sequel to Diablo II. Played it to level 12 and saw the necromancer was going to be total shit. The game couldn't be more opposite to Diablo II if it tried.
>>
>>385354401
The fuck? Necromancer in GW is one of the best PvE characters and some curses like Spiteful Spirit were nasty in PvP.
>>
Guildwars.
>>
>>385354659

It's not about it being good. A class can be overpowered, yet also be boring. It's also about people hyping the game as the true successor to Diablo II. But if someone went into the game expecting an MMO where you could summon 20 skeletons, of course they'll be disappointed.

WoW, one look at the muddy mess made we want to drop it.

I guess, but you can control 12 and I'm pretty sure there was a weird way to control more involving a skill that caused them to temporarily turn neutral.

Yes and no, it depends what you want out of them. If you're looking for an experience like The Burning Crusade you won't find it, there are some obscure MMOs out there that are fun otherwise your choices pretty much come to WoW, FFXIV, SWTOR and TESO. (and other obvious ones I missed)

I quit both Wildstar and TERA within an hour of starting, mostly because I downloaded them out of sheer boredom and got annoyed by some minor things.

> Wildstar
> Customising the UI felt finicky and was taking a bit of time to figure out

> TERA
> Movement and camera felt floaty and I wasn't in the mood to get used to them

Neither of them are bad games and neither of those issues were bad enough to even be considered problems. It's just that when a game is F2P and there are literally hundreds of other options out there, the most minor annoyances really stand out. It's not like I paid money for these games and there are plenty of other MMOs that I want to try out, so why bother staying if the first impression isn't all that good?

I'd be way more patient if I had to pay for a game upfront.

>>
>>385364264

Every MMO has problems, and even the "classic" ones that were shut down had a lot of people bitching about their issues too.

You're not ever going to enjoy an MMO if you don't have a clear idea of what you want, and a clear idea of what issues/problems you're willing to put up with. If you don't think about those two things before shopping for MMOs, you'll never find one that you'll like.

Most MMOs these days are shit, but even the best ones today aren't that much worse than the best ones of yesteryear. You just need to know what you're looking for and lower your expectations accordingly.

Full name is AIKA online and it's been around since 2009.

I have no idea how actice/dead it is because I haven't played it for years but I remember it had a unique national system that basically made the whole game revolve around the top players.

The other unique system was having a Fairy Companion (called a Pran) that would give you extra buffs and spells and had it's own personality depending on how you treated it as it grew up.

One of the personalities you could get was literally called "sexy" which basically made her a slut.

I never like the default UI of any MMO I play. It's just that I don't understand why things like the buff/debuff bar seems to be locked onto my character portrait. Trying to find a way to separate the two just got too annoying for me to deal with.

I think a lot of the problems people have with FF14 are the same issues that people have with most other theme park MMOs. I stopped playing FF14 because it got boring to me and I couldn't describe why I lost interest. After a while, it became clear that I just don't tend to dedicate more than a few months to any theme park MMO, no matter how well designed.

Also, making it mandatory to go through the main quest in order to unlock endgame dungeons is more than a little annoying. If you spend a month leveling through dungeons with rest XP, then it's easy to hit your 50s even if you haven't beaten a main story quest over 30. That's pretty annoying to have to deal with.
>>
>>385367164

Yeah gating behind the MSQ is a flaw that even the devs have acknowledged - it's fucked if you're a new player and casually just doing roulettes as you play each day. And their solution is to allow players to pay a fuck ton of money to skip all of it instead of taking the time to shore up rough spots in the first 50% of the content any new player is going to see.

It's fine design if you've been playing from the start, but for new players or people returning after a long break, it's intense garbage. I like the game but it's definitely one of those things that clearly holds it back. Which I guess might be intentional since their servers basically can't handle more players anyways, if the game had the population WoW has it would just break under the load every weekend.

At least in WoW you get free skip potions if you buy an expansion. Squeenix went full jew in SB, what a bunch of hacks. The retarded fanbase who defend it are just as shitty.
>>
>>385367681

I'm not saying it's not. I'm just saying it's what most of us are used to, whether or not it's shit.

>>385367734

I'm not saying sandbox games are better. I'm just stating that most of the complaints that I have towards FF14 seem to be the issues I have with most theme park games. If anything, that shows that FF14 isn't as bad as a lot of its detractors seem to think, since the main issue is with genre conventions instead of the specific game.

>>385367936

It's good to know that the devs have acknowledged that it's an issue. It's not even something I'd consider to be catastrophic, but it was just weird to see that my level and gear were completely appropriate for an end-level dungeon but, by design, I couldn't access any of them.
>>
>>385367347
I only recently started playing FF14 and my main issues with it are how slow and simple the combat is for 90% of the leveling process (use a few skills for a combo, maybe a buff, repeat ad nauseum) which is made worse by the level scaling bullshit for dungeons which reduces you to all of 2 skills. And JESUS FUCK, the quests are horrible. Just awful, samey "go here, kill this, talk to x" quests. Then there's the constant cutscenes for no reason. And the story and characters are trash.

I'm only still playing is because my friends play it, so I'll continue looking for some reason to continue on.
>>
>>385368330
Not that Im defending the price, but one of the reasons they listed to "justify" the extreme cost I kind of agreed with. They claimed if they made it cheaper, the fanbase would probably demand new players purchase the skip potion, and make it a "required purchase". Having experienced the cunty fanbase of FF14 I can imagine that happening exactly.

The 2nd reason was to stop their fanbase crying "What do you mean the gajillion hours it took me to complete the story are only worth $X?"
>>
>>385368402

I thought some of the side quests and job storylines were interesting, but the main quest is horribly inconsistent in terms of quality or diversity. The main quest probably wouldn't feel nearly as bad if it wasn't absolutely mandatory to reach the endgame content. It's just a major misstep by the developers who want to pad out playtime for their sub-based MMO.
>>
>>385352890
EQ2, this was back when WoW was dominant and EQ2 first opened up their free trial to try and entice people away. Some of my friends played EQ2 instead of WoW because they were hipster faggots. I tried EQ2 with one of my WoW friends and we dropped it within a few hours.

>>
>>385368536

Or they could have just created a free alternative way to access endgame dungeons in the next expansion. This really isn't a matter of price so much as just having the option to access the same content that your friends are playing without a tremendous amount of time being devoted to the main quest.

Honestly, the hours I spent on the roulette should be a much more reliable measure of whether I can be a party asset than if I'm able to just trudge through what's basically a half-baked single player campaign.

Beware of anything Korean. Their players expect an insurmountable grind and they expect the cash shop to be filled with essential items almost required to experience the game and lessen the grind. It's what they enjoy.
>>
>>385368402
Try to voice chat with your friends while you're doing it, and have them suffer through dungeons with you. Everything's more fun with friends at least.

I feel like when people say the story is good they are either talking about just HW 3.0 - 3.3, or they're more impressed by the setting or individual characters. XIV lore has a lot of interesting stuff, and quest dialog can tie into it and paint a strong picture. But as far as just 'your adventure' in ARR goes, yeah it's bland, inconsistent, and most people are right to dislike it. It gets better in HW since the tone is more like a lonely journey, but it's still no masterpiece by any means.

>>385368330
Yeah can't really defend SE on the jump potion bullshit, it's garbage through and through and doesn't speak well of the future for getting new people into the game unless they start bundling that shit with new expansions like Blizzard does. Also I'm pretty sure people just don't believe that you've beaten O4S, it's certainly among the easiest of raid tiers, but there's still only like 87 parses uploaded for it.

I could genuinely get into mortal online or similar games if they REMOVED THE STUPID FUCKING CAP FOR FREE PLAYERS

Explain to me how having only 60% of the ability a pay 2 player does is in any way fair?

Complete fucking bullshit. They should have allowed free players to reach 100%, but in a lower number of skills than paying players so that we have to specialize.

60% is practically useless.
>>
>>385368547
Yeah, the job quests are definitely my favorite so far. You get to learn about the class and do some class related stuff with interesting characters instead of generic crap. I also enjoy the fates, hope when I get to the expansion content more people are doing them.
>>
>>385364264
The major problem is literally on a conceptual level. Do you want a "polished" and extremely planned out linear experience, than just play any major MMO still alive today (IE: wow). DO you want to play a super bland and boring grindfest filled with like-minded people and converse with them and make an adventure out of little, well too bad that generation dissapeared.

We traded the sense of adventuring and ACTUALLY talking to people about the world and its few interactions for "playing the game" if you get what I mean. Most popular MMOs focus on really polished experiences but u can just as easily play an RPG without the MMO part and get the same level of quality and the only thing you lose is the "social tab" (Different from partying and questing with complete strangers)
>>
>>385363504

It's not just sub money, if they can show to investors that people play for a long time, it sounds better. It's also why they have those daily log in rewards for a lot of games. Shows that people consistently play daily on their statistics. It's always about money, man.
>>
>>385369432
I feel like the only real unique thing an MMO like WoW offers is the raid content. It's highly planned out, but it requires some odd amount of people to work together to overcome a challenge and lets them see their growth as a result of overcoming team-based challenges. And however fleeting it is, they can empirically show with their better gear that they're 'better' players for beating that content sooner than others.

No. It's clear you didn't actually play any old school MMOs. The only ones complaining were casuals who were mad that things were too hard core. You're looking through this with rose-tinted glasses. We have the luxury of looking back at those mechanics and seeing that they were necessary to maintain a certain level of depth and complexity that most of today's MMOs lack. If you were playing them back then, you obviously wouldn't have that hindsight.

Think back to the days of Ultima Online and all the people who would blow a gasket whenever they did a rune trade on the ground and some asshole like me would come along and just scoop it out from under them, Belan the Looter-style. Yes, that was funny for me at the time and it's funny to laugh at now, but small design decisions like that had a significant backlash. Even if the majority of that backlash was "casual," it was still significant enough to discourage those kinds of "loot" mechanics in modern MMOs.

These MMOs were never designed to make you happy. They were always designed to make money, and the "casual" conspiracy that you're bitching about has always been where the money was.

This game can run on PS3. Are you trying to play it on a netbook or something?
>>
>>385371862
I think he meant lag in the wrong sense, since he mentioned sub 20 fps in empty areas.

However, that being said depending on where you live XIV is rife with network issues. I live in the Pacific Northwest and oftentimes the route between me and the server gets all fucky and instances lag out to shit for me and a buddy who lives a few miles away. My ping is generally like 40ms, but routing across the US is a fucking mess. I imagine players behind the east coast wall of fucked routing probably have it worse more often.
>>
>>385353287

There aren't even 100 levels in the game. The term "good" is completely subjective. They clearly have different priorities than you do, so you have to be specific about things you're looking for in a game.

FFXIV is a great game to sunk 100+ hours, in those hours you will finish all the plot, play the majority of dungeons and raids and mess a little with crafting/gathering and pvp

enough to see that beyond the story, the game has a serious content drought in it
>>
>>385374936

It's been mentioned earlier, but a serious detriment to FFXIV is that the main quest is really inconsistent in terms of quality and it's absolutely mandatory to reach endgame content. 100+ hours assumes that you're able to tolerate the main quest all the way through to completion in the first place.
>>
>>385374778
Plot: ESO has no plot worth mentioning.

Quest design: Standard collect 10 bear asses MMO fetch quests.

PvP: No one does it

PvE: Alright but again nothing special. It makes a big deal about being classless, but the reality is that only some race/weapon combos are viable.

Overall, its a pretty shit game.

I played perfect world for about an hour when its beta came out.

I "played" granado espada for a day. And by played I mean I played for about an hour then let my party afk farm in some popular room with some other guys. Game crashed overnight and I never reopened it.

Most other ones I tried I gave at least a week or a month too before stopping for some reason or another. Generally I just get burnt out on dailies or endgame grinds where they want you to get a tierset to farm another tierset to farm another tierset to start being able to do endgame to start farming more tiersets. And you have to upgrade them all to be worth a shit and it costs the same for each set.
