Random encounters is literally the worst thing that ever happened in all of gaming.

In JRPGs, no. Enemies on the overworld are worse and they encourage you to avoid fights.

Random encounters are fine if the encounter rates are sensible.
Dragon Quest VII on 3DS has no random encounters, but it feels like you get into even more fights because of that as the game constantly spawns monsters in tight corridors that you have no way to avoid

>JRPG
>Go through a dozen fights where you spam standard attack to kill random encounter enemies
>use shop healing items to keep up at this training
>Do this
>Level increases enough to beat boss blocking progress
>Kill boss
>Continues
>repeat
Is this good game design?
Is there ANY game where this is good?

>he only plays 1980s style primitive JRPGs

in classic dragon quest, healing items are expensive to stockpile and mp restore items are rare.
even a simple dungeon run can mean death. classic rpgs almost feel like a form of gambling, which is part of the appeal.
I think Zelda II handled it better.

1 step, fight. 3 steps, fight. 2 steps, fight. 5 steps, fight. 1 step, fight.
That was my experience trying to walk around in Dragon Warrior.

There are games where it's less bad but that's as good as it gets really. JRPGs are meant to be a casual genre where you lazily progress and absorb the cliche shitty story.

From my experiences in the past 7 years, they really aren't. Then again, I have not touched any of the modern Dragon Quest games.
